In the remote Kapchorwe region of Uganda, female circumcision ceremonies occur every two years. In the summer of 1996, TVE producers looked at the United Nations Population Fund's 'Reach' effort to stop the practice.
Now TVE's crew returns to Uganda with BBC-TV correspondent, Donu Kogbara, as the date approaches for the next season of circumcision ceremonies.
Has the project been successful in discouraging the life-threatening practice of female genital mutilation (FGM)? Jackson, the manager of the REACH program, whose sister nearly bled to death and whose mother-in-law is crippled as a result of FGM, has made some converts. But Ms. Kogbara cannot hide her despair at the bloodletting she finds.
This is a dramatic follow-up to The Cutting Edge, one of the films in the 1996 TVE series Not the Numbers Game, available from Bullfrog Films.
