Auditioning dancers for a flamenco ballet version of Carmen, a charismatic choreographer discovers a fiery new leading lady. During rehearsals, they become involved in a torrid affair whose emotions parallel the story of jealousy and betrayal in the production. Reality and fantasy blend brilliantly as the flamenco numbers reflect the twisted erotic drama of both the dancers and the characters they play.
Carlos Saura, Spain's foremost filmmaker, and Antonio Gades have created a unique version of the enduringly popular story, true to the tempestuous passions of the original, yet innovative in applying a modern sexual sophistication to the classic triangle. Laura del Sol proves an exciting new star, a voluptuous, simmering seductress, while Gades demonstrates that he is one of the most compelling dancers in the world.
In Spanish with English subtitles.
