Baseball wins millions of true believers as a massive wave of immigrants fills the stands - eager to "become American" by rooting for America's game. But they're dealt a crushing blow when eight Chicago White Sox players succumb to the "Black Sox" scandal of 1919. Bribed to throw the World Series, even Shoeless Joe Jackson is banished from baseball forever. A shadow falls across America's pastime, prompting F. Scott Fitzgerald to chastise the culprit who had destroyed "The Faith of 50 Million People."
