Gaustad concentrated on two of the founding fathers to explain the emphasis on the division of state and church that is the basis of the Constitution. Jefferson and Madison understood that we must have freedom for religion but also freedom from religion in a just state. Professor Bonomi showed the strong religious upbringing of 18th century children who were taught reading through the use of "primers." However, each denomination wanted to ensure that no competing church be proclaimed the state religion and they were willing to separate church and state.

A series of lectures offered by the Oregon State University Constitution Bicentennial Project. Symposia ran from October 1987 til May 1988.
