Hendrick Hofgen, an actor of the Art Theatre Company of Hamburg, realizes his purpose in life is only one thing - success. To that end, he subordinates everything - political conviction, human relationships, and artistic ambition.

Following the Nazi takeover in Germany, Hofgen befriends The General, one of the principal figures of the Nazi power machinery. Hofgen's graph of successes rises steeply. However, the price he has to pay for his successes also rises steadily. He is soon drawn into the poisonous circle of evil, from which he can no longer escape.
