This is a powerful and frighteningly detailed record of the Nazi blitzkrieg throughout Europe. On September 1st, 1939, the seemingly invincible German armies invade Poland without warning. Two days later, the British and French declare war on Germany. Hitler promises to respect the neutrality of such neighboring nations as Belgium, Norway and Denmark - while at the same time plotting their invasions. The allies fight back gallantly; unfortunately, they are defeated in what is a classic situation of too little, too late. Hitler's next move is through France; via a complicated series of maneuvers and strategies, he thwarts that nation's Maginot Line, a mighty chain of fortresses and connecting underground passageways that were to guard France's borders against German invasion. Thousands of British, French and Belgian troops are rescued in what is described as "the miracle of Dunkirk." The French government, though, is weak and in disunity; there's an "armistice," and more than three-fifths of the country comes under Nazi occupation. The Free French forces, under Charles De Gaulle, will continue to fight on!
