The world's first political trial is brought to the screen by master Andrzaj Wajda (Ashes and Diamonds, Man of Marble). In 1794, year five of the French Revolution, "The People's Hero," Georges Danton, (Gerard Depardieu, The Last Metro, Green Card returns to Paris after a self-imposed exile. He's come back determined to stop "The Terror" of The Committee of Public Safety headed by Maximillion Robespierre and symbolized by The Guillotine. Once partners in orchestrating the People's Revolution, Danton and Robespierre now stand diametrically opposed to each other in their methods. Danton wants peace and the end of State Terror - even at the cost of his own head - while Robespierre "The Incorruptible," is driven by an almost neurotic obsession to preserve the Revolution 'at any cost.' Having himself left a turbulent Poland in 1981 to film Danton in France, Wajda offers a compelling insight into the fragility of revolutionary ideals and the terrific cost of attaining Democracy.
