Episode Six. At the start of 1918, the odds looked bad for the Allies. With Russia knocked out of the war by revolution and the French Army rocked by mutiny, Germany stepped up the offensive on the Western Front. But all Europe was running out of men; both sides were drafting old men and young boys. Then a new player came into the deadly game, shifting the balance. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson urged the United States into the war to "make the world safe for democracy" and by 1918, five million American men were in uniform. Episode Six explains the myriad factors, on the warfront and the homefront, that led to Germany's ultimate collapse - and to the stage that would be set for a bitter peace.
