Anchored at the crossroads of three continents and great civilizations, with 10,000 years of history and a splendid cultural heritage, the enchanting island of Cyprus emerged from colonial rule as an independent republic in 1960.

In 1974, this young republic was divided by force when Turkey occupied the northern third of the island. The invasion resulted in massive population uprooting and economic dislocation. In spite of this artificial division, Cyprus is a compelling story of dramatic progress in the face of adversity.

Today, Cyprus, as a modern European state, stands proudly at the threshold of the European Union. It is a vibrant international business center strategically located in the eastern Mediterranean. It offers a robust economy, a sophisticated infrastructure, state of the art telecommunications, thriving tourism, shipping and financial sectors and a highly educated population. Through farsighted economic and social planning, people in the island's free areas enjoy a very high standard of living. A reunited Cyprus will spread prosperity to all the population throughout the island.

Beyond Division is an introduction to this compelling story of a dynamic Cyprus on the move: of the transformation of an ancient land to a modern democratic state with a dynamic free-market economy; of a small state of less than a million people persistently yearning to secure its rightful place in the modern world; of a remarkable people struggling peacefully to reunite their country and free it from foreign occupation; of a splendid journey by a country determined to realize its natural destiny as a full member of the European Union; of the noble aspirations of a unique people deserving the active support of the USA, the EU and the UN, to realize them. The film examines why this is an important time for the reunification of Cyprus; why Cyprus can be a multiethnic island of stability in a volatile region serving the broader interests of the world community.
