ollowing the example of Alexis de Tocqueville, Richard Reeves traveled around the U.S. in the 1970's and 80's trying to answer Tocqueville's unanswered questions from a time when there were only 13 million Americans and Jackson was President. Reeves believes we are the same type of people we were then, the kind who change places and this country, the kind who will reach the Pacific Ocean and then surely turn and destroy the societies that they built behind them. This country has always been about the individual.
