23 minutes
SD409 .A391 1989

Illustrates the evolution, structure and success of a cooperative research project in southwest Oregon known as FIR (the Forestry Intensified Research program). Environmental and historical factors which led to the development of FIR, and advances the program made in reforestation of a valuable timber region are traced. The program presents non-technical summaries of key research findings in the area of soils, tree genetics, planting and handling of seedlings, harvesting, and weed control, among others. The central foundations of the FIR program--its Adaptive and Fundamental research components--are identified and compared, along with descriptions of technology transfer mechanisms, and key management elements crucial to the success of FIR.
