A civil war erupts in a quiet rural Argentine village when a local Peronist politician claims a municipal clerk is a Communist. This savage black comedy lampoons political zealots of all kinds, while exposing the roots of the official terrorism that Argentina suffered under the military junta. At first the petty squabblings make for hilariously satirical slapstick, until the indigenous machismo escalates into increasingly violent retaliations.
While its political content is especially relevant to understanding the social and psychological sources of dictatorships, its harsh comic truths about human folly have universal significance.
