The Xi'an Incident, a great historical event, took place on the morning of December 12th, 1936. Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, two well-known KMT generals, ordered their troops to storm Huaquingchi, Chiang Kai-shek's residence in Xi'an, and put him under house arrest. China was then at a critical juncture in its resistance against the Japanese invaders. The people lived in abysmal misery. Chiang Kai-shek's policy was to use all his forces against the Chinese communists and weakening the only effective resistance. Generals Zhang and Yang had tried repeatedly to persuade Chaing to give up this policy, but he refused. With time and goodwill running out, the generals kidnapped Chiang in order to force him into a patriotic anti-Japanese alliance with the communists. This bold action caught the attention of the whole world. As a result, the CPC and the KMT entered a phase of united action against Japan.
