The Suzhou River runs through Shanghai. Under a bridge across the river, Gao Zhihua sets up a bicycle repair stall. Next to it a woman named Qin Nan puts up a tailoring stall. Both of them have spent years in the countryside and have now returned to Shanghai and become self-employed.
Gao Zhihua's mother likes Qin Nan and hopes that she will become her daughter-in-law. Gao Zhihua also feels deeply attached to Qin Nan, but he does not know how to express his love. He and his mother are a bit puzzled by Qin Nan's constantly solemn face and withdrawn speech.
