The events take place during the ten chaotic years of the "cultural revolution". Three men are living on a raft on the Xiao River. They drink, quarrel and fight. Life has not been kind to any of them. The oldest, Pan Laowu, over 50 years of age, who had a romantic but painful love-affair thirty years earlier, is still a bachelor. He was unjustifiably criticized and humiliated during the early part of the "cultural revolution". The middle-aged Zhao Liang has a big family. He has to save every penny to feed his children. The youngest, Shi Gu, is in great distress because his fiancee, Gaixiu, has been forced by the new District Director to marry another man.
The story develops with Gaixiu's escape onto the raft. Pan Laowu risks his own safety to shelter her and protect the couple. The former District Director who has been put to forced labor is on the verge of death. The three rafters are determined to help him at any cost. At the end Pan Laowu loses his life in an effort to save them all.
