At the Peking Hotel, one day in 1980, a reunion takes place between Xu Lingjun, a poor herdsman and his father Xu Jingyou, an American millionaire. They had lost touch since the eve of Liberation. Xu Jingyou, who was then a Nanjing capitalist, fled to America. He left his wife and his son behind. Jingyou prospered in American and founded a new family there; his former wife soon died.
In 1957, Xu Lingjun, his son, was wrongly branded a 'Rightist', and sent to the far North-western pastures.
There, he developed a great affinity for his fellow herdsmen, the vast grasslands and the horses he raised.
He married a brave and honest girl. They were poor, but with courage and perserverance the couple
improved their lot and they led a simple and happy life. In 1979, Lingjun was rehabilitated and assigned
to teach the children. His dream of being a teacher was fulfilled, and he devoted all his life to the job.
Then suddenly Lingjun is called to Beijing where his father awaits him and wants him to move to
America ...
