"I doubt there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world." So wrote Charles Darwin about earthworms. In this fascinating program, Darwin's experiments are recreated to illustrate the natural cycle in which earthworms return precious nutrients to the soil for plants to use. Microphotography explores motion and reproduction as well as the staggering variety of earthworm tunnels that act as tiny irrigation channels allowing rainwater to penetrate the soil and reach the roots of plants.
