Lorna Simpson
(A World of Art series)

VHS
30 minutes

Photographer Lorna Simpson explores the ambiguous ways in which words and images function together to create meaning. For the opening of the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York City's Soho, she creates a series of large-scale, multipaneled photographs silkscreened onto felt. The images show scenes from the urban landscape, designed around the theme of private activities that take place in public spaces. Each photograph is accompanied by a wall text that is meant to alter viewers' initial reactions to the image and divulge the reality beneath surface appearances. The program captures the intense work and hectic pace of producing, installing, and opening a show.
