Research and Professional Interests:

My main goals are: 1. To support effective stewardship of data generated by the OSU research enterprise; and 2. To carry out our land grant mission by facilitating research dissemination to diverse audiences, and prepare our students to be globally competitive in a complex digital research environment. In striving to meet these goals, I conduct research related to assessing researcher data management aptitudes and methods, and work to ameliorate gaps in their understanding and practice. My methods include surveys and direct interviews, as well as indirect assessment via analysis of data management plans. I am interested in the development and implementation of a common set of data information literacy standards for graduate students, and in the subsequent maturation of a core curriculum.


Research Projects

Survey on Research Data Stewardship at Oregon State University

In order to improve our data services, I am assessing the current scope and efficacy of the data management processes of faculty on campus. In order to flesh out the "data landscape," I deployed a campus-wide survey during the Fall 2013 term. Information gathered included topics such as: how much data are being generated, and by whom (college-level and rank); where data are being stored over short- (< 5 years) and long-term time periods; how data management activities are currently being paid for; faculty opinions on how they should be paid for in the future; whether or not faculty are generating metadata, and if so, using what standards; how often do faculty share data, and how; and what limits data sharing. The intent is to better understand how faculty are managing their data in order to plan for targeted services, support, and infrastructure. Preliminary results from the survey should be available soon.

Data Management Plans as a Research Tool: The DART Project (IMLS National Leadership Grant LG-07-13-0328, $155,464)

Data management plans (DMP) provide a window into the detailed individual data management habits, capabilities and needs of faculty and their graduate students. Structured analysis of DMPs can provide insight into the kinds of data researchers are generating, and how they are managing those data in current and future projects. From the library's perspective, this information is fundamental to providing research data support services that are tailored to the needs of the faculty and students we aim to support. This two-year NLG-Libraries Demonstration Project, led by Oregon State University in collaboration with the University of Oregon, Purdue University, the Georgia Institute of Technology and Pennsylvania State University, will facilitate a multi-university study of faculty data management plans (DMPs). The primary outcome of the project will be the development of an analytic rubric to standardize the review of data management plans, providing a means to inform targeted expansion or development of research data services at academic libraries.

Course Instruction

Research Data Management Curriculum for Graduate Students

During the Winter 2014 term, I taught the first offering of a graduate-level, credit bearing course in research data management, GRAD 521. The purpose of the course is to enable students to properly manage research data as a means to foster efficiency, ensure proper stewardship of data, and exceed funder requirements for planning, preservation and sharing. The 2-credit, graded course is open to students of all levels and disciplines. There are no prerequisites for the course, but students should have a good idea of what their M.S./Ph.D. research project will be, if not already be engaged in the work. This course is applied, so students need to understand how to relate the material to their research workflow.

The foundation for the course combines outcomes-centered course design with active learning techniques. My approach is predicated on the idea that getting the students actively engaged with the content and techniques of data management will be more effective than lecture alone. My hope is that after taking the course, the students incorporate data management best practices into their daily work flow. Such behavioral change takes self-reflection ("How does this material relate to me?") and practice, both of which I strive to offer during our class meetings.
