Form letter from Thomas Addis on behalf of the United American Spanish Aid Committee, San Francisco Chapter. June 19, 1940.
Addis writes to urge the recipients of the letter to contact the French government and demand the release of imprisoned Spanish refugees imperilled by the marching Nazi army.

UNITED AMERICAN SPANISH AID COMMITTEE

83 McAllister Street,

Room 320,

San Francisco.

June 19th 1940

Dear Friend,

I have just heard that many of the Spanish Refugees and International volunteers are trapped in prisons and labor batallions [sic] in the path of the advancing Nazi army. We are sending telegrams to the French Government pleading with it to free them and to give them a chance to escape.

Will you show that the American people care, will you help to express the humanitarian feelings of thousands of free people by sending telegrams, night letters of letters to:-

The President, the French Ambassador at Washington, Mr. Cordell Hull, M. Petain etc.?

I suggest something like the following:-

"URGE THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT RELEASE IMMEDIATELY SPANISH REFUGEES AND INTERNATIONALS TRAPPED IN PRISONS AND LABOR BATALLIONS [sic] IN PATH OF NAZIS. GIVE THEM CHANCE TO ESCAPE."

In the name of humanity do this quickly, and ask all your friends to do the same; thousands of brave antifascists are in danger of torture and death.
