Dear Arnold:
In connection with a law suit in which I am involved, the question has arisen as to the extent to which my scientific work has been used for the benefit of humanity.
This question has come up in the law suit only incidentally, but my attorney has asked me to find out how many oxygen meters have been sold for use in hospitals - that is, how many meters of the hospital model have been made. I think that he would like to have the number both of meters to be used in control of partial pressure of oxygen for premature infants and also for use with anesthesia apparatus.
Would it be possible for you to give me this information?
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg
- Letter from LP to Gerard Piel, Scientific American. [Filed under LP Correspondence: P: Individual Correspondence (Piel, Gerard): Box #308 Folder #308.3]
July 1, 1965
Mr. Gerard Piel
Scientific American
415 Madison Avenue
New York, New York 10017
Dear Gerry:
I don't know who is in charge of the news releases that you call Scientific American Feature, so I am writing to you about one dated 17 June 1965, and entitled Experiments Suggest That Earth's Core is Made of Iron and Nickel.
The last paragraph of this release begins with the following sentences: "In general one or both of two effects are usually observed when materials are heavily compressed; the atoms are moved closer together, with the effect that the material becomes denser, and the geometrical arrangement of the atoms within the crystal is altered — an effect that may increase the density, have no effect on it, or even decrease the density. In one of our experiments, for example, we subjected an alloy of 90 per cent iron and 10 per cent nickel to a pressure of 4,350,000 pounds per square inch. It proved to be less compressible than pure iron end its density dropped!"
It is not true that increasing the pressure on a material can cause a decrease in the density. Such a behavior would be contrary to the principles of thermodynamics.
The statement that the density of the alloy dropped when it was subjected to a pressure of 4,350,000 pounds per square inch cannot be true.
I think that I can surmise what might have been written here (a correct description of the changes in density of the sample that might take place when the compression is carried out so rapidly that thermodynamic equilibrium is not achieved in the course of the compression). I am sure, however, that many readers would be misled by these statements.
These erroneous statements are not in the article itself, which is in the June 1965 issue of Scientific American. There are some errors in this article, and some examples of poor writing. Thus the figures showing three different structures of iron crystals are not in the positions described in the legend.
The statement is made that "At 230 kilobars the density of both became equal…" Here both refers to pure iron and in alloy. The word is misused since one could not state that the density of one became equal - the correct wording would be "The density of the two substances became equal."
I must say that I do not like the omission of the word that in the sentence "Could the discrepancy be explained by supposing lighter elements, such as silicon, are alloyed with iron in the core?" The sentence "Could the discrepancy be explained by supposing that lighter elements, such as silicon, are alloyed with iron in the core?" is much easier to understand.
This time I am not making any complaint about the scientific content of the article. The last letter of complaint that I sent to Dennis, about a serious error in an article on meteorology, was referred to the author, who has never written to me.
With best regards, I am,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Professor D. A. Bromley
Department of Physics
Yale University
New Haven, Connecticut
Dear Professor Bromley:
During the last several years I have been working on the problem of the structure of atomic nuclei, considered essentially as aggregates of hellions and tritons.
I have become interested in your papers published jointly with Drs. Kuehner and Almqvist (to whom I am sending copies of this letter), end I am writing to ask you your opinion of an idea that I have had about the structure of the complex of two carbonic nuclei whose existence is indicated by your measurements of elastic scattering.
I would expect that a deformed magnesium-24 nucleus would exist, with the structure of two tetrahedra sharing an edge; that is, an aggregate of 6 helions, 2 of which are shared between the 2 tetrahadra defined by having helions at their corners.
If the tetrahedron edges are all taken to have the value 3.2f, the principal moments of inertia have the values 3.2, 5.1, and 6.1 times 10-48 gram centimeter2 (I surmise that the shared edge is shortened somewhat, and the other edges lengthened somewhat, in such a way that the two large values become a little larger.)
Have you attempted to evaluate a moment of inertia from your experimental excitation curves?
This elongated double tetrahedron structure for magnesium 24 would be metastable, separated from the normal (octahedral) structure by a potential hump. I estimate that it a energy, relative to the normal state, is approximately as indicated by your scattering results.
I shall look forward to learning what your opinion of this proposal is.
Sincerely yours,
mjh Linus Pauling

Mr. Wheelock H. Bingham, Chairman
Society for the Family of Man
c/o Protestant Council of the
City of New York, Inc.
475 Riverside Drive, Suite 456
New York, N. Y. 10027
Dear Mr. Bingham:
I thank you for your letter of 7 July, in which you remind me of the invitation to me to make nominations for the recipients of the Society for the Family of Man’s awards for excellence.
I write to nominate Robert M. Hutchins for the award in the field of World Peace, on the oasis of his continued efforts in support of a peaceful world, and especially for his leadership in arranging that the International Convocation on the Requirements of Peace, based on the encyclical of Pope John XXIII, Pacem in Terris, be held in New York City in February of 1965.
Dr. Hutchins, former president and chancellor of the University of Chicago and former associate director of the Ford Foundation, is the president of the Fund for the Republic and the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. I enclose some of the publications that describe the Pacem in Terris convocation that was held by the Center in New York City, under the leadership of Dr. Hutchins.
I shall be pleased to have you submit this nomination and the accompanying documents to the Judges Committee when it meets in the middle of August.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Dear Mr. Antun:
I examined with interest the manuscript on molecular volumes of chemical substances in the solid state, which you sent to me. I am returning this manuscript to you herewith.
You asked me to comment on your work.
I am not able to reach a definite conclusion as to whether or not your work is worthwhile. It is my opinion that no analysis of molecular volumes of chemical compounds and elements will lead to results of any value, unless consideration is taken of the different ways in which atoms are arranged in different substances. I think that this conclusion can be reached from the fact that many substances occur in different crystal forms, with considerably different specific volumes.
I think, moreover, that the matter of the effective volumes of substances is to be approached better by consideration of interatomic distances than by consideration of molecular volumes. It is necessary, as you know, to differentiate between different kinds of interatomic interactions, in the discussion of interatomic distances of crystalline substances.
My suggestion to you is that you attempt to translate your arguments into arguments based upon interatomic distances, rather than upon molecular volumes. I must say, however, that I am not sure that this attack would be profitable, just as I am not sure that the attack that you have already made, with the results described in the manuscript that you sent to me has been profitable.
With best wishes to you, I am,
Sincerely yours,
mjh Linus Pauling

Dear Petie,
We hope you are enjoying your summer in your new house. You surely must be happy to be able to expand and spread out a bit.
We have seen your article and your letter to Nature. We enjoyed that; especially the Daddy.
We are not yet in our new house! I think our record will almost equal yours! The house is beautiful and fits exactly into the landscape. You can scarcely see it from a little distance. The tile in the kitchen and our bath are handmade and are absolutely beautiful – the loveliest I've ever seen. We are excited about them. Also, my old wood burning range which makes the kitchen really handsome.
We don’t know when we can arrange a family house warming. Perhaps it is impossible with everyone so scattered. We might try for Christmas if you thought your family could get away at that time. (A good time to be out of England for a bit). I think we’ll plan on Christmas there with Linda’s and Crellie’s families even if we can’t arrange for yours and Linie’s. I guess Linie and the kids are not coming this summer. It is just as well since we’ll be moving in in August. But Christmas is a possibility.
We are well and dreadfully busy. Love to you and Julia and the children.
Mama
