June 4, 1965
President Lyndon B. Johnson
The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear President Johnson:
I write to ask if you would give me a few minutes of your time, on any day during the coming weeks, to discuss our military involvement in Vietnam and the problem of achieving world peace.
I am one of the ten living recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. There are two others who are citizens of the United States, but I am the only one who is working actively for world peace; Dr. Ralph J. Bunche is serving as an official of the United Nations, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is deeply involved In the civil rights struggle.
As a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, and as an American citizen, I feel a special obligation to work for the settlement of the Vietnam problem in a way compatible with the principles of morality and justice.
Recently I have been in touch with my fellow recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, in a discussion of ways in which some of us might assist in the achievement of the goal of peace in Vietnam and the decrease in the amount of use of military might in the world affairs. We have developed the plan of making a public statement on this matter.
I feel, however, that there might well be reason for me to discuss this subject with you, before such a statement is issued, and I am accordingly writing to ask if you would be willing to grant me a few minutes of your time for this purpose. I would expect to adhere to your wishes about the confidential character of such a meeting. There is the possibility that the goal that my fellow Nobel Peace Prize winners and I have in mind could be achieved without our issuing a public statement, or that the character of the statement could be changed in such a way as to make it more effective in the achievement of the goal of peace, justice, and morality.
Respectfully yours,
mjh Linus Pauling

He will devote the summer to making conductivity measurements, under your supervision, and in association with Bob Causey. I am planning that Bob Causey assist to some extent in the conductivity measurements, but that he devote most of his time to the interpretation of these measurements in terms of chemical equilibrium.

Dear Linie:
I am writing to tell you about our trial in New York, which began on Monday 20 May and ended at 5:20 P. M. on Friday. I had sued the New York Daily News for libel, based on an editorial in which they attacked Norman Cousins and me. The Daily News was found not guilty. My lawyers say that apparently my character witnesses were too good, and that the Jury decided that my reputation had not been damaged at all about the defamatory statements. I have now added Eleanor Piel, wife of Jerry Piel (publisher of the Scientific American) to my legal staff, and she is preparing a petition for a new trial.
Just after the character witnesses had testified for me, the lawyers for the Hearst Publishing Company, against whom I had filed another suit, got in touch with my New York lawyer who is handling that case, and offered to settle. We agreed to settle that case out of court, on payment by them of $17,500.00, of which Mommie and I get about $10,600.00, the remainder being expenses and legal fees.
One of our lawyers at the Daily News trial lives in Yakima, Washington. He had flown to New York in his private plane, a Beechcraft Baron, and he invited us to fly back with him. Mama accepted, and although I was not very enthusiastic about it I decided that I ought to go along too. We left New York at a quarter to six in the morning, landed at Chicago for breakfast and refueling, and at an airfield in South Dakota to refuel again. From South Dakota over the rockies we were troubled somewhat by thunderstorms, and our pilot, Mr. Tonkoff (the lawyer - there was only the three of us in the plane), had to change his course a number of times, in the effort to dodge the thunderstorms. He was in communication with the ground most of the time.
We landed at Yakima about 6:00 P. M., stayed overnight with the Tonkoff, and flew home the next day by commercial planes.
Mama got a big kick at one time, while we were flying over the great plains, using the automatic pilot. I had not had much sleep for a couple of nights, nor had Mr. Tonkoff. Mama was riding in front, beside Mr. Tonkoff, who had told her that the only thing that one needed to worry about while flying on automatic pilot was a possibly collision with another plane, and that the pilot should he on the lookout for other planes. She looked at him later on, and saw that he was sound asleep. She then turned around to look at me, and found that I was sound asleep, too, so that for some time she was in charge of the plane. We were at about 5000 ft. then, and had not yet come to the mountains.
Mama also enjoyed going through the rockies, rather than over them - the plane was not pressurized, of course, but provided with oxygen, which we did not use. Our highest elevation was 9000 ft. Mr. Tonkoff followed along valleys and mountain passes, except as we approached the Snake River, Where he rose to 9000 ft. and went over the last mountain range, in order to avoid thunderstorms to the north and south.
We have had trouble finding time to go to the ranch. We had planned to go this week and next, but I received a telegram from the Indian ambassador extending an invitation to me have breakfast with the President of the Republic of India, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Sunday morning, so we have postponed our trip until 15 June. We plan to stay there about ten days.
When are you planning to come to Pasadena and the ranch, with the children? Mommie and I would like to know, to make arrangements.
Much love from
Linus Pauling:hpg

House of Commons

Dear Friend. Noel-Baker:
A month has passed since I have received your letter of 4 May, I have in the meantime been trying to get an answer from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but so far without success.
Also, I have been expecting to receive a letter from Lord Brockway, but none has arrived.
I have not taken action about the petition to President Johnson (although I have taken some actions independently about Vietnam matter). I feel that it may well be that the suggestion made by Lord Brockway and communicated to me by you is better than my proposal.
I have revised the statement somewhat, as enclosed. Perhaps you would like to make some changes in this version. Would you be willing to join me and others in issuing this appeal, perhaps as revised by you?
I think that there is no use asking Pearson or Bunche or Father Pire to sign, although you may be able to get Father Pire to agree — he refused to sign the statement that I had prepared.
Boyd Orr, Schweitzer, and Luthuli agreed to sign. I think that they would have to be asked about the revised statement, but I think that the revised statement is close enough, in spirit, to the original one that if there were difficulty in getting in contact with Luthuli he could be considered a signer, without further word from him. I communicated with him through Alan Paton, using Paton's London address.
Norman Angell did not sign my petition, but included in his letter the statement "but if you are certain that such a petition would do more good than harm, I will sign it.” I think that he would sign the new appeal, if you were to ask him to do so.
I look forward to hearing from you. I feel that the Vietnam crisis becomes more and more serious, week after week.
Sincerely,
mjh Linus Pauling

Dear Mamma,
Many thanks for your several letters some of which took a while to get here. I was sorry to miss your invitation to the clan gathering at Easter but I am not sure that we would have been able to come anyway. Things have been pretty hectic, I have been doing a lot in the house getting it finished up working well and trying to keep my professional work going. Easter was a bit dull, I was working on the house and did not put much time in on the children and Julia which was a bit unfortunate. The children have next week off from school, it being Whitsun, and if the weather is nice I hope we can go to the seaside for a while.
Would you please put a cheque for $7.50c in this envelope that I enclose and send it off? I will credit the money to Pa's book account.
The children have just had chicken pox, though they are now both back in school. It did not upset Sarah, but Thomas was really rather unwell for two or three days. Sarah is in the stage just between babyhood and girlhood and she does not want to become a girl so she is a bit obstreperous. Thomas has been very nice for the last six months. I am not sure that he is completely happy, due to a number of things, but he certainly is a lovely boy.
The house is coming along well. The basement is still a mess, though I am getting my room well cleaned up and another fortnight should see it looking nice. The play room is still a mess because I use it as a workroom to do the rest of it. Julia's room is nice, the living room is looking reasonably well but still needs some stuff done to it and we need some pictures. I have sort of decided that I can't afford to buy what I would like which would be to collect contemporary work and so am getting a number of prints. A friend of ours is going to paint us a big picture. I am not sure that Julia or, for that matter, me, are going to like it. Still, I am willing to give it a try.
We have just had a short visit from Anita and Peter Oser and a friend of theirs who makes stained glass windows. She is going to design and make us a big coloured glass panel to go in the living room. I think it will be very nice. It was great fun to see Peter, who has not been to London since 1948 I should think and also great fun to see Anita. She seems to me to be blossoming. Doing a great many things.
When are you coming to see us? We would certainly love to have you and you can stay with us because we now have enough room. It would be great fun.
With love from,

The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
454 Dexter Avenue
Montgomery, Alabama
Dear Dr. King:
In April I sent you the draft of a petition, which I hoped would be signed by most of the living recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.
In consultation with The Rt. Hon. Phillip J. Noel-Baker, M.P., I have now revised this petition. I enclose two copies of it, with the title An Appeal By Recipients of The Nobel Peace Prize.
Noel-Baker and I hope to announce, in a short while, that it has been signed by eight of the ten living recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize – Lester Pearson feels that as head of the Canadian government, it would not be proper for him to sign it, although there is the possibility that he will reconsider this decision. Ralph Bunche feels that he, as an official of the United Nations Secretariat, is precluded from signing petitions to any government.
You, of course, are not restricted in this way, and Noel-Baker and I hope very much that you will sign the appeal. Please return the signed copy to me, by airmail, as soon as possible.
I send my best wishes to you and Mrs. King.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Enc.
PS: I do not remember whether or not I had asked you if you noticed our son, Dr. Linus Pauling, Jr., at the time of the 4-day march to Montgomery? He was present during the whole time, and was one of the five people from Hawaii who held up the large banner reading “Hawaii Knows Integration Works”. He told me that he spend most of his time during the four days giving medical treatment to marchers who were suffering from cold, exhaustion, sore feet, and other ailments – he is a practicing physician. I saw that there was a photograph of him, giving medical treatment to a patient in the article in Newsweek on the Selma-Montgomery march.

Dr. Peter J. Pauling

University College
Gower Street WC 1

Dear Peter:
I have read with interest (at any rate, I have read part of it) your paper on Molecular Packing in Crystals of the Aromatic Hydrocarbons.
Could you tell me whether your considerations lead to a value for what I have called the van der Waals' radius of the hydrogen atom? The answer to my question may be in the paper, but I have not found it, in my rather hasty reading.
Mama and I are getting along well. There are still some things to be done on our house at Salmon Creek — the painting is nearly finished, and the floors are to be laid in a week or two. We are spending most of our time there now, to keep an eye on the final operations.
We do not have any plans for coming to Europe in the near future.
Much love,
PS: Penguins have continued to arrive. I think that it is alright for you to continue to have them sent, and I shall send you the money that is owing on them before long
Would you send me a list of your published papers, and titles of papers that you are planning to publish?
