Mr. Ernest Chock
659 Seville Apt. 9
Goleta, California
Dear Ernest:
I am writing about a problem that you might attack, with use of the computer. It should lead to a paper worth publishing.
At the top of page 116 of The Nature of the Chemical Bond there is a paragraph about the bond angles in the halogenomethanes. The last sentence is e statement that the bond angles can be accounted for as the result of the difference in the sizes of the atoms, when the difference in the bond lengths is taken into consideration.
This sentence does not rest upon any published calculations, so far as I am aware. I carried out some calculations, several years ago, upon which I based the statements. I think that it would be worthwhile to look into this matter.
The method is to assign bond lengths and contact radii to hydrogen and halogen atoms, and to vary the bond angles so as to minimize the energy, with the energy function containing a quadratic term in the deviation of each bond angle from the tetrahedral value (the same term for all six bond angles) end a quadratic term for the deviation of each of the six contact distances from the sum of the radii. I think that the problem could be treated as one involving seven perimeters, to be evaluated from the experimental bond angles. These seven perimeters are the contact radii for hydrogen and the four halogens, the coefficient of the bond angle quadratic term, and the coefficient, of the contact quadratic term. Of course, only the ratio of the last two is needed.
If you are interested in attacking this problem, you might bring it up with me the next time that we have a talk.
A good reference for bond angles is Interatomic Distances and Interatomic Distances Supplement, Special Publications No. 11 and No. 18 of The Chemical Society of London.
Sincerely,
mjh Linus Pauling

THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION OF OXONIUM ION
D. M. Bishop, J. Chera. Phys. 43, 4453 (1965)
The author carries out a theoretical investigation of the oxonium ion, using a single-center molecular wave function consisting of 9 terms. His results are that the molecule is rather flat pyramid, with angle 114° 26', and bond length 0.93A. He gives a review of experimental results an earlier theoretical results. He gives reference to the proton affinity as calculated first by Sherman, 182, and to a mass-spectroscopic value 169 Kcal/mol, by Z. L. Pal'rose and E. L. Frankevitch, Dokl. AKad. Nauk. SSR, 111, 376 (1956); JACS 80, 2344, (1958).
Another theoretical calculation is by R. Gaspar, I. Tamassy-Lantei, and Y. A. Krugylak, J. Chem. Phys. 36, 740 (1962).

VIBRATIONAL-ROTATIONAL SPECTRUM OF DIFLUOROBORANE AND DIFLUOROBORANE-b (d)
L. Lynds and C. B. Bass, J. Chem. Phys. 43, 4357 (1965)
The authors report that the FDF angle is 117.4 ± 2° assuming the BH to be 1.0A. I judge that they take the BF distance to be 1.295A. - they say that this value is consistent with the observed moments of inertia.
Similar results for the fluoride are given by the same authors in J. Chem. Phys. 40, 1590 (1964) and for the bromides in J. Chem. Phys. 41, 3165 (1964).
BOND ENERGIES AND THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN NEXT-NEAREST NEIGHBORS IN SATURATED HYDROCARBONS
M. Cignitti, T. L. Allen, J. Chera. Phys. 43, 4472 (1965)
Another paper is T. L. Allen, J. Chem. Phys. 31, 1039 (1959)
The authors say that there is evidence of intramolecular repulsion between hydrogen atoms closer than 2.4A.

LATTICE ENERGIES OF PHOSPHONIUM BROMIDE AND IODIDE AND THE PROTON AFFINITY OF PHOSPHINE
T. C. Roddington, Trans. Faraday Soc. 61, 2652 (1965)
The author finds 194.5 + 5 catal/mol for the proton affinity of phosphine. By a similar method, calculation of lattice energies, he had obtained 209 catal/mol for the proton affinity of ammonia, in 1959. He says that a less reliable value of the proton affinity of the latter molecule, 182 cacal/mol, is obtained by assuming the lattice energies of ammonium and hydroxonium perchlorate to be the same, with a reference to Sherman, 1932. He mentions that Halliwell and Nyberg, Trans. Faraday Soc. 59, 1126(1963), found 261 cacal/mol for the absolute hydration energy of the proton, which then leads to 89 cacal/mol for the absolute hydration energy of the hydroxonium ion.

THE ROLE OF HYDROGEN-HYDROGEN COMPACTS IN HYDROCARBONS
D. T. Craig, R. Mason, P. J. Pauling, and D. Santry, Proc. Roy. Soc., A286, 98, (1965)
I have seen a reference to this paper saying that naphthalene and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons show a minimization of intermolecular hydrogen-hydrogen repulsions.

Professor Mark Nickerson
Faculty of Medicine
University of Manitoba
Winnipeg 3, Canada
Dear Mark:
I apologize for the delay in answering your letter of November 6. I have been overwhelmed with the accumulated correspondence from my Australian trip.
I do not have anyone to propose for the post of head of the University of Manitoba Chemistry Department, except possibly my son, Peter Pauling.
Peter has been in England for eight or nine years. He has been a lecturer in chemistry in the University of London, University College, Gower Street, for about five years. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of London, after having worked with Kendrew at Cambridge (he is a co-author of one of the papers on myoglobin) and having worked also in the Royal Institution and the University of London. His research is in the field of x-ray crystallography of inorganic substances. He cooperates closely with Professor Ronald Nyholm. Peter has been in charge of training the inorganic chemists in the field of x-ray crystallography, and both Nyholm and Professor Sir Christopher Ingold have told me that he is doing an excellent job.
Peter is a lively fellow, keen and wide awake, and with an interest in human beings. He has an engaging personality. He is married, to an English girl, and has two children.
I think that he is a good judge of people, and that he might be thoroughly successful as head of a chemistry department. I have no idea as to whether he would be interested in coming to Winnipeg. I refrain from asking him personal questions, because I think that he feels handicapped in having me as his father.
I have never heard him lecture, but the following anecdote is probably significant. A couple of years ago he gave a scientific talk at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. A British scientist, a friend of mine, then wrote to me as follows: "I heard Peter give his paper at the British Association meeting. I am now, for the first time, convinced about hereditary."
Peter will be 34 years old on 10 February 1965. He received his Bachelor's Degree In Physics from the California Institute of Technology. He received training in inorganic and physical chemistry, and I think a short course in organic chemistry. I am sure that he would want to continue work in x-ray crystallography.
With best regards to you and Mrs. Nickerson, I am,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

15th September, 1964.
Dear Mamma,
Thank you very much for your letter of the 4th September which I received today. I have not received any letter forwarded by you from Mr. Braunstein with enclosures for me to fill out and send back to him. When did you send it and where did you send it?
I am pleased that you saw Linus Junior's children and that you like them. I certainly like them very much. I enjoy talking to Linie who seems to be thinking sensible thoughts and he asks sensible questions. I enjoy talking to them all and playing with them.
We went for a holiday to France. We stayed with a friend of mine who is an Intern in a psychiatric Hospital near Calais. It was fairly cheap which I think was the main reason we went and was reasonably satisfactory though I was rather tense while we were there. There was some conflict of purpose between me and my host and perhaps between him and himself. We did eat well and rest well, however, and it was quite interesting to observe this hospital. We made several trips to the coast including a couple to Belgian where the coast is very nice. It was warm and sunny during our entire stay and we enjoyed playing in the fields and swimming at the coast. I think the thing that Thomas liked most was the Go-karts which are available in a large variety of types and sizes on the Belgian promenades. I had great trouble persuading Thomas that we could not take one home with us and will have to make him one. I think there ought to be a sale for them in England and I would like to try to persuade some small manufacturer to make them here. They are quite expensive but very good. All English children make Go-karts out of a board and the wheels of a pram.
We are having a little difficulty getting a builder to complete our house. The Architect had arranged for three builders to tender for the job and only one has done so. I will take him if he can do a reasonable job in a reasonable time for a reasonable price. I want very much to get the house finished so I can think about other things and to use it.
We have had a really excellent summer. It has rained almost none at all and has been hot with the sun shining. The children have run around almost naked most of the summer. Their cardigans are really beautiful they look very nice on them and we all like them very much.
Much love from

Egidio A. Fulchiero, Chief
Department of Anesthesiology
Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals
New London, Connecticut
Dear Dr. Fulchiero:
I have sent your letter on to my coworker, Dr. Arthur Cherkin, with the request to
him that he answer it.
I would think that a rough value of the output obtained by use of the Beckman Oxygen
Analyzer, but that a method that involved a direct determination rather than a
determination by differences III oxygen partial pressure would be more accurate.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
