8 November
Dear Peter,
I imagine that you are right, and since we haven't heard anything from Pop I have come to the conclusion that we will not be going. In a way it is just as well, since I have a lot to do if I'm going to get done here within the next few months. Things continue to go well, I am pretty amazed. I have gotten more good data and I think important results in the past month or six weeks that in the previous year. I fell that I can say with conviction that I will finish up soon - it is a good feeling, I must say. I have begun writing about post-docs, hopefully at Stanford. I have also been assured of a temporary post-doc here to fill in any time between getting my degree and the beginning of something new.
I purchased a new axle for the coaster brake, at the outrageous cost of 31¢ (approx. 2/6), and took the thing apart, washed it with gasoline (petrol), and put it back together with a little light motor oil. I have to get a new nut, as one of the nuts that holds the entire assembly together has stripped threads. I shall do so and send it off to you. I imagine that perhaps it ought to be taken apart again, and reassembled with gear oil or grease. I haven't found any little book, but it is a pretty simple device, and I think that you ought to be able to take it apart and put it together again. It is somewhat simpler than, say, the gearbox of a 1932 Ford.
I would like to have a 901 Porsche.
It would be very nice to be able to stay here for a few months with post-doc income, especially during the summer. It would also be nice to have another sailing season, but if it proves anything like, this summer I won't spend much time in the boat.
I am going to have to do something about hi-fi one of these days. My main amplifier, an old Heathkit, is out of commission with a burnt-out power transformer, and now my FM turner seems to be acting up. I should like to set a decent stereo amplifier, and a Tandberg tape recorder, to do anything now, so I must make do.
Do you ever go to motor car races? I should like to see a real GP race. I have been going to races here a bit, since there is a nice track fairly close, that is, about a 45 min drive from here. Graham Hill was here, driving a Lotus 23, driving a fast, smooth, uninteresting race, until the thing crapped out.
Much love from Crellin
