The salaries of several individuals (H. Gilrane, K. Jones, J. Catchpool, T. Sato) were charged to our budget in the final months of the 1962-1963 fiscal year, as a means of avoiding an excessive balance at the end of the year. Mrs. Arietta Townsend informed me that this situation still prevails when I asked her why our Sept. charges were so high.
The tentative budget submitted with the application for grant renewal last May was fairly tight and allows little room for extra expenditures. Charges for salaries and benefits now amount to $6500 in excess of original budget estimates (including extrapolation for November), plus an additional $2000 commitment for salaries (nature unknown to me).
I mentioned this problem to you at the end of October, just after having received the Sept. report from the Business Office, and you indicated that instructions would be sent to Mrs. Townsend to correct the situation. Could this be done soon so that we may avoid future financial difficulties?
