- Letter from LP to Peter Pauling. [Filed under: LP Biographical: Personal and Family, Box 5.044, Folder 44.5]
15 November 1963
Dr. Peter Pauling
62 Elgin Crescent
London, W. 11, England
Dear Peter:
I was happy to see your letter of 1 November, which did not arrive until after we had left for the ranch, and accordingly waited until we had got back, yesterday (the 13th).
I worked on my Nobel speeches while there, and Mama worked on several lectures and articles that she has to get done.
We are looking forward to seeing your house, possibly next summer. We are not going to come to England on this trip.
Also, your letter looks very good. I don't understand just what sort of a typewriter you have, but it seems to me to be unusually good.
You must be careful about swimming, now that you have had this experience with cramps. I doubt that the cramps mean anything especial - probably just that you overworked the muscle, perhaps after a period when the muscle had not been used very much.
I hope that your research goes along well, and that you get enough support for it. I have a feeling that the amount of work that you can accomplish may not depend very much on the number of assistants that you have or the amount of money for research, provided that your basic needs are satisfied - at any rate, that has been my experience. I trust that you are going to apply again for the money that you want.
I enclose a check for $1,000, which you may use as you wish. Linus is coming to Oslo, but I doubt that Linda or Crellie will come - both are, I think, tied down with their work, and perhaps they feel that one experience of this sort is enough. It would be fine if you decided to use this money to travel to Oslo for the ceremony on the 10th of December and the Nobel Lecture on the evening of the 11th - probably some other things too; I think the Red Cross Nobel Lecture may be on the 12th, and on the 13th there is a peace meeting in Oslo at which Mama and I both are to talk. If you want to come, or both you and Julia, please do so; if you decide to put the money to other uses, please do so.
I thought at first that if you came to the ceremony at 1:00 P.M. on 10 December you would have to have a morning coat, as I shall, but now I have learned that a business suit would be satisfactory. The dinner that evening is white tie.
Please let me know about your decision, so that I can write to the Norwegian Nobel Committee about reserving a room for you.
I have two secretaries now, to help me answer the mail, and Mama has one. Between us we have answered about 400 letters of congratulations - perhaps one-third of the total. A lot of people seem to be pretty pleased with the Nobel Prize to me, and a lot, such as Henry Luce, seem to be pretty irritated.
The New York Hearld-Tribune had an editorial with the title "The Nobel Peacenik Prize". Someone wrote to the editor, and sent me a copy: He addressed his letter to the warnik editor of the Herald Tribune.
Yesterday Mama and I spent our second day at Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. The discussion was very interesting - about ideologies of scientists - the discussion on the first day also had been interesting. We shall probably build a house at the ranch and rent an apartment in Santa Barbara.
Much love from

Mr. Bruce Freeman
Knapp Street
Route No. 2
Monroe, Connecticut
Dear Mr. Freeman:
In answer to your letter, I may tell you that I was born in Portland Oregon on 28 February 1901. My father was a druggist, who died when I was nine years old. I attended grammar school in Condon, Oregon, and Portland, and Washington High School in Portland. I became interested in Chemistry when I was thirteen years old. I began studying at Oregon State College in 1917, taught quantitative analysis there as a full-time instructor for one year (1919-1920), and received the degree of Bachelor of Science and Chemical Engineering in 1922.
I have two sisters, who are younger than I.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:kpc
