Dear Daddy,
We wish to congratulate you on this remarkable achievement.
It was fun to talk with you on the telephone. We had first tried to get you during the little party we had on the 10th. You were at the ranch.
I am not sure that you want all your offspring at the gathering and am not sure in your argument about the matter with Mamma who was on which side. If you have decided what you want to happen (or really rather what you have agreed to happen) I would like to know. We have to make a lot of arrangements for the children and the house building etc. and I want to get Julia some clothes because she does not have any for the purpose. This would take a little time.
Our house is coming along fairly well. Forde is behind schedule somewhat but he has knocked off the bay window and done almost all the basement. Though not completely convenient (it will not have enough small rooms until we use the whole house ourselves) it is going to be a very nice house. I think my treatment of the oriel window and glazing will be very good.
What do you think of my new typewriter ribbon? It is a carbon ribbon attachment for my Olympia SG 1 typewriter with Congress Pice typeface and a carbon ribbon. It is not electric. The thicker Congress type comes out very nicely with the crisp clean impression of the carbon ribbon. I bought the typewriter but the boys arranged the ribbon attachment for me (It costs £10, too much).
While swimming on Saturday with Thomas I got terrible cramps in both my calves while trying to do the back stroke for the first time in many years. The pain left after a couple of days but now my right heel hurts rather a lot and I have difficulty in walking. I think they are probably related and I have pulled the tendon in the heel during the cramp.
I have been very depressed. The NIH finally wrote about my application of a years standing and said no, due to the dollar problem. My proposal had a high scientific evaluation. NATO sent the money for my Parisian colleague A. M. Michelson I asked for but not the money for me (until Michelson makes the things.) My postdoctoral fellow will leave in the next month or two; my programmer Mrs. Dollimore has quit to have a baby; I do not know where I will get the money for a diffractometer.
Mrs. Londdale sends her congratulations and best wishes. She says she will not write separately; you have enough mail to read.
Love from, Peter
