30 October 1963
Dear Peter:
Your Olympia typewriter cum carbon ribbon types quite nicely. Almost as nicely as our departments IBM's. Alas, I am at home and the IBM's are at school, so I must be satisfied with the old Smith-Corona.
I am not sure what is happening either. Mama mentioned that she thought Daddy was going to invite one or both of us to go to Oslo, but we haven't heard from Daddy as yet. Needless to say, we would like very much to go. I think that Daddy is pretty pleased, but he gave me the impression of being most pleased by the fact that a test ban has in fact been negotiated and deposited. He said that he is certain that it is not coincidence that the Nobel prize was announced on the day that the test ban became formally in force, 10 October. There was a rather unsavory editorial in Life Magazine.
A young man, who lives down the street and rides to school with me, just happened to run over his brother's bicycle some time ago, and gave me the rear wheel, cum coaster brake. Unfortunately the axle is a little bent, but I am reasonably certain I can pick up a new axle easily. Hence, I think your coaster brake situation is well in hand, and I will bring and/or send it after I get a new axle.
I think that the cheapest way from here to Europe is to go to Vancouver and fly tricholoroacetic airlines (TCA) to London. If that is in fact true we ought to make some attempt to join forces In London and fly on to Oslo together. By Caravelle, of course. The alternative would be to go to Pasadena first, and all go together on SAS. In any event, I (we?) should like to visit you in London.
About a month ago I embarked on a slightly different experimental approach to my general problem, and happened across a quite interesting effect. With luck I will get a ms off within a month or two, just on the recent stuff. A couple of months ago I went to the Genetics Society meetings, and gave a little talk that I think didn't go too badly. The stuff I gave at the meetings will make another little paper, but there are a few ambiguities that need to be cleared up first, and to do that I have to build some sticks, which is not difficult, nor particularly time consuming, but requires a bit of manipulation. On the way back from the meetings I flew in a Caravelle from Hartford, Conn., to Chicago, and am convinced that that is the most comfortable airplane there is.
I don't know what the situation is on the Merc. Mama said that she didn't really want to be bothered, and couldn't spend much time on it, and I am here, kind of out of touch. I suggested to my friend Al Jacobsen, who has a 300-sl and doesn't particularly like it, that if he could unload it he might get a modest commission, but in as much as he is rather busy I doubt that he will do much. I suggest you deal with Linus. He has expressed renewed interest in it, giving forth with such sentiment as "It would be a shame for it to leave the family", and such. In the event that we a) go to Europe, and b) go to Pasadena first I will see what I can do while I'm there.
Much love from
Crellin

Dr. Norman Thomas
112 East Nineteenth Street
New York 3, New York
Dear Dr. Thomas:
I am sorry that you have the opinion, as expressed in your letter to me, that Professor Yasui has a double standard for judging the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.
I have known Professor Yasui for several years, and have observed with interest his great efforts in the cause of peace. I have formed the opinion that he has been truly extraordinary in his ability to adhere to the principle of not having a double standard of this sort, and in opposing those people who do have a double standard.
It is especially difficult for the Japanese people to adhere to this principle, because of the exposure that they have to the militarism of the United States, the consequence of our repudiation of the principle, which they had accepted in Japan, of demilitarizing Japan after the second world war.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg
