Dear Peter:
On our return from a three-weeks tour of Latin America, Mama and I were pleased to find your two letters.
I have sent a check for $140 to Mr. John M. Daniel, as you requested, and have noted that it is a payment on my debt to you for books. It would be useful to me if you would send a statement about the present state of that debt.
Mama and I are pleased that we could send you the stock. The 300 shares of Parke-Davis corresponds to 100 shares that we purchased on 21 September 1954 at $32 per share, total $3200 - there was a 3/1 split. The Newmont stock came into my possession two or three years ago - I have forgotten the date. Its value then was $600.
Much love from

Dear Friend:
My wife and I were happy to receive your letter. We, too, believe that the future now looks much brighter than it did only a few months ago.
We should know in a week or two what the action of the United States Senate about the bomb test agreement will be. I am confident that the Senate will approve by an overwhelming vote, probably about 90 to 10.
Dr. Teller is still working hard, but I believe that he has only a small influence on public opinion now.
A good indication of the lack of success that Teller is achieving is shown by the enclosed editorial from the San Francisco Chronicle, which is probably the leading newspaper of the Pacific Coast.
My wife and I have just returned from a three-weeks visit to South America. We were impressed by the announcement of the Presidents of five Latin American countries, urging that the whole of Latin America be made into a nuclear-free zone, and we decided to visit some of these countries, in order to get additional information. I gave scientific talks about my work on anesthesia and on molecular disease in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Santiago de Chile, and both my wife and I gave talks about peace in these cities and also in Valpariso. We were able to have a very good conversation with President-elect Dr. Illia of Argentina. We think that the prospects for a progressive and stable government in Argentina are now very good. President-elect Illia made excellent statements about his determination to work for world peace. We also talked with the President of the Assembly and the President of the Senate in Buenos Aires, and both of them said that they would support Dr. Illia in his work for peace.
We talked also with President Goulart of Brazil and President Alessandri of Chile. In visiting President Goulart and President Alessandri we were accompanied by three representatives of the World Peace Council, who were also in Brasilia (Brazil) and Santiago de Chile while we were there. My wife and I are not members of the World Peace Council, and we do not have any intention of becoming members of that organization, but we believe that it is necessary that there be some cooperation between the peace groups of the west and those of other parts of the world.
I enclose clippings from two of the Buenos Aires papers about our visit there. One of them mentions our talking with the President-elect Dr. Illia.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Drs. Sobell and Haschemeyer:
On my return from a trip to Latin America I have found your letter and manuscript.
I have read the manuscript with interest, and have submitted it to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for publication, as shown by the enclosed carbon copy of my letter.
I may point out that I think it is customary to write words such as methyladenine as a single word, rather than as two words, and you may want to make corresponding changes in the manuscript.
I have never liked the common use of the word moiety by chemists, because it seems to me to be a misuse. The word has the principal meaning one of two equal parts, and this meaning corresponds to its derivation. I have thought it wrong to use it for one of two greatly unequal parts.
A more serious matter is the fact that the name Hoogsteen was misspelled in many places in the manuscript. I use carelessness of this sort as an indication of carelessness in carrying on research, and I almost decided not to submit your manuscript because of the misspelling.
Let me know if any difficulties arise in connection with the publication of your manuscript.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Dr. Morrison:
As I was reading your interesting paper, with Drs. Colwell and Gill, in the August 1 issue of the Journal of Chemical Physics, it occurred to me that you did not know about my paper that bears on this subject. It is a paper entitled The Rotational Motion of Molecules in Crystals, Physical Review 36, 430 (1930).
In this paper I presented for the first time the now generally accepted explanation of the residual entropy of crystalline hydrogen at low temperatures, which is mentioned in the first section of your paper, with reference given to a number of published papers from 1932 on.
Moreover, in my paper I discussed the methane crystal, which is the subject of your paper, and I pointed out that there was evidence indicating that in high-temperature form of the crystal the molecules are essentially free to rotate, but that the rotation is restricted in the low-temperature form. In a general way this agrees with your conclusions.
I may mention also to you that it might have been proper for you to have given reference to the investigators W. F. Giaque and H. L. Johnston (Jn. Chem. Soc. 50, 3221 (19S6)), who discovered the residual entropy of hydrogen, perhaps as the first reference in your footnote too.
There are several points about your discussion that I am interested in, but I shall not bring then up in this letter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Bob:
After reading your article Addlepates and Addlescents I have decided to send you a copy of the article Molecular Disease, Evolution, and Genic Heterogeneity, written by Dr. Zuckerkandl and me. It may be that my colleague is the grandson of the famous Austrian savant, Professor Zuckerkandl. I shall try to restrain Dr. Zuckerkandl from taking any serious action about this matter.
Ava Helen and I are still hoping to stop off to see you some day, as we drive through Santa Barbara on the way to our ranch, which is about 150 miles farther north. We do this once or twice a month.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Dr. Bolton:
I am pleased to have received your letter of 9 September.
I shall look forward to receiving reprints of papers describing your interesting structure determinations.
It seems to me that there is little doubt that there is a strong attraction between the carbonyl oxygen atoms and ring carbon atoms, which are also carbonyl carbons.
You may have seen discussion of the carbon-oxygen double bond in the third edition of my book The Nature of the Chemical Bond (I do not have a copy available, and am writing from memory). I think that I pointed out that there is a charge of about plus 0.44 on the carbon atom, corresponding to partial ionic character of the two bent bonds that are involved in the attachment of the oxygen atom. The orbitals on the carbon atom involved in these bent bonds extend above and below the plane of the ring in your compound. These orbitals, to the extent that they are freed by the partial ionic character of the bonds, might be used in covalent bonds using the unshared electrons of other oxygen atoms. Moreover, the negative charge of the oxygen atom is at its maximum in the center of the ridge opposite the bisector of the tow covalent bonds that it normally forms.
It may be that carbon-oxygen attraction for which you have evidence should be described just as attraction of the positive charge of the carbon atom for the negative charge along this ridge of the oxygen atom. If we use the relation that I formulated many years ago between distance and bond number, the length 2.77 Ǻ is found to correspond to bond number 0.01, which is so small as to be negligible.
I have suggested that van der Waals radius is usually about 0.8 Ǻ greater than the single-bond covalent radius, so that, as you point out, the van der Waals contact between carbon and oxygen might be expected to be about 3.0 Ǻ. However, if electrons are taken away from the carbon atom by the partial ionic character, the van der Waals radius of carbon would be less, and this might account for the contact distances that you have reported.
All in all, it seems to me pretty clear that there is a special attraction between the carbon atom and the adjacent oxygen atoms above and below the ring, and that it is to be attributed to the positive charge on carbon and negative charge on oxygen.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dr. Arturo U. Illia
Hotel Savoy
Buenos Aires
Argentina
Dear President Illia:
I remember with great pleasure and satisfaction your conversation with me on the afternoon of Friday 22 August, about the great problem of preventing a devastating war and preserving peace in the world, and the contributions that the Republic of Argentina might make. I thank you again for your courtesy in having received me.
I am now writing to you about a different but closely related matter.
During the visit that my wife and I made to Buenos Aires, we talked not only with you and other members of the government, but also with many other men and women who are working for peace in the world. My wife and I have now learned that many of the women workers for peace with whom we talked have been arrested by the government and are now confined in prison.
We have heard that Margarita de Ponce, Aura Fleita, Fanny Edelman, Celyca Capra, Delia Etcheverry, Maria Morano, Noemi Harrington, Nina Borzone, and more that forty other women were arrested and imprisoned on Sunday 8 September 1963, in the city of Rosario.
I find it shocking that the Republic of Argentina should have taken this action. I have been hoping that, after a period during which authorities of the Republic of Argentina suppressed the rights of individual human beings and carried out oppressive actions, your nation would take its place among the civilized nations of the world, would recognize the rights of individual human beings, and would abandon the dictatorial and oppressive policies that are characteristic of governments in the backward nations.
I know that you have not yet been inaugurated as the President of the Republic of Argentina, although you have been elected.
I appeal to you, however, to take immediate action, to repudiate this dictatorial and oppressive deed of the government authorities of Argentina, and to achieve the liberation from prison of these women, whose “crime” is that they are deeply concerned about the immorality of the war and the immorality of the economic exploitation, and who hope that the world can be changed in such a way as to decrease the amount of human suffering.
Again, I appeal to you for action, and I express the hope that your government will be a civilized government, based upon justice, and not a government of terror and oppression of individual human beings.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Fred:
I was happy to receive your letter. Ava Helen and I send our best regards to you and your whole family
It is interesting that you should have made such a long trip by car in one day. I think that in general you should plan not to drive so far. I find that three hundred miles is about as much as I like to do in one day.
It is fine that you had a wonderful trip to Europe.
I shall see to it that you receive a copy of the third edition of College Chemistry, when it is printed. I have not yet read the page proof.
I have put in quite a bit of material that is not found in other texts. Perhaps I have gone too far in the discussion of theoretical matters, but I've put a good bit of it in fine print.
Ava Helen and I had an interesting experience last month. We spent three weeks in Latin America - Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico. We visited the Presidents of the first three countries, and talked with them about their proposal that the whole of Latin America be made a nuclear-free zone. We also talked with some other members of the government and with many people in the peace movements in these countries. We looked over the slums in the big cities, and were shocked by the misery and degradation of the people there, who are, however, better off than those in the country, we were told.
Today we are going to go to our ranch to stay for about a week and have some rest, although I find the ranch a good place to work, because I can study and write without being disturbed.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling.Hpg

Deary Mamma,
I am sorry not to write to you sooner and more. I have been going through a stage or state or both.
What is the state of the offers for the Merc in your garage please? I want to sell it because it is crazy to let the damn thing sit around and I need the money. The builders are in my house taking it apart and putting it back together and I have to pay them. We are doing it the way I planned which I think will make it a pretty nice place. Anyway do you think there is any chance of selling the thing in say the next couple of months and are you willing to do so. I would like Crellin to do it to save you the bother but I presume he will not be around.
Linus Jr. mentioned to me that Linus Fowler was interested but he never told me whether he was actually or not.
How are you? Are you well. I was sorry to hear you had been ill. Perhaps you should take it easier and not rush around so much. I spent three days of the Rome meeting in bed with an infected tonsil which I was careless enough to let go bad. It was a shame. Perhaps I should have them out. They would probably do it for me in UCH.
I am trying to do a lot this week. There are many things to do on the house, term starts next week with various things to do, I want to get an application in for some support, and I would like to write three papers on various things before Nyholm gets back.
I hope you are well. I am sorry I could not come to California for the summer. It was the dollar problem I think but anyway the money did not come. It has not come yet. I wish it would.
We should be in toward the beginning of January. Not by Christmas unfortunately. When shall we see you? It is time you came to visit us.
Love from,
- Letter from Peter Pauling to Crellin Pauling. [Filed under LP Biographical: Personal and Family, Box 5.044, Folder 44.5]

Dear Crellin,
What is the situation about that Merc? I want to sell the damn thing because I need the money. The Builders are in my house taking it apart and putting it back together again and they require large sums of money so I am scraping the barrel. Can anything be done to flog it? You presumably are not down there and will not be going down there. Perhaps Ma can sell it. What do you think the best thing to do is? I will need the money about the first week in December.
I will chase up Mamma and see what the situation is. Linus Fowler mentioned it to Linus Jr. who was going to ask him but never told me. I shall check on him.
How are you? I am very pleased the house is going but have a hell of a lot to do and am sort of worried by several things. Still I think it will work out in the end. I have a report for the army to do this week to get the boys paid and part of a lab manual to write for term which begins Monday and an application to the local research supporters for some money by Monday and two papers I would like to get done.
The children are fairly well. They are in school, the boy in the Juniors and the girl in nursery school in the mornings. Julia is pretty well.
I am just back from Rome for the Crystallography meeting. I spent three days in bed with a bum tonsil. It was too bad. It rained a good deal but it is a damn sight warmer than here. The meeting was not too good. Not really very exciting.
Hope you are well. Come see us in our new house.
love from,
PP

Dear Linus,
That Sherwood S.3000 II tuner for FM has not shown up? Did you send it off? It would be nice to have it. Did you leave it in California?
Things are going fairly well. The builders are working over my house, tearing things down mostly but I hope they will start putting things back together soon. I think it will be a very nice place. The room in the basement where we are knocking down all the walls is nice a big and light.
My architect Leon Carson has got his house going (with a little help from me) and all seems to be going well. He does not plan to start conversion until next March (a better building season) and it all seems to be under control which is a good thing.
You mentioned to me that young Linie was interested in purchasing the Merc and that Mamma had said that someone had offered $3000 for it and you would see if Linie was that interested. Did you and was he? I don't really want to write and ask him. I want to sell the car because I need the money for my house.
I am just back from Rome for a crystallography meeting. I was in bed for three days with infected tonsil and it rained a good deal. Meeting pretty dull. Boy from UCLA there whom I advised to look you up. He is going to Hawaii to head the new computer unit of the university. Bob Sparks is his name. I have seen a reasonable amount of him over the years starting about 1959 I guess when he was here for a year. Rather quiet. Good careful searching computer man.
Our house will not be ready quite by Christmas unfortunately sometime in January. I hope you come stay in it.
love from,
PP

Dear Hans:
I write to you, the Chairman of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the atomic Scientists, to communicate to you my decision to resign from the Board of Sponsors.
I ask that you inform the Editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, in order that my name may be removed from the list of members given on the title page of the Bulletin.
You know about the trouble that I had with the Editor of the Bulletin in my effort to get him to publish suitable corrections and retractions about the statements published in the first two attacks on me that appeared in the Bulletin. You also know about the third episode – the publication, without my previous knowledge, of a statement by Bentley Glass in the June 1963 Bulletin, containing obviously untrue or seriously misleading statements about me. These statements were made with page references to my book No More War! As I have pointed out in my answer, published in the September 1963 issue of the Bulletin, reference to my book shows that Bentley Glass has misrepresented my statements in a serious way, such as to tend to damage my reputation and to support his earlier allegations that I had mad flat misstatements or scarcely trustworthy extrapolations from the existing facts.
I feel that the Editor of the Bulletin should, in justice to me (a member of the Board of Sponsors), have checked the statements in the communication by Bentley Glass, before publishing this communication; moreover, I believe that he should have sent the communication by Bentley Glass to me, before publication, and have given me the opportunity to comment on it with respect to its reliability and suitability for publication, or to prepare a reply to be published in the same issue. The delay of three months before publishing my reply and the Editor’s half-hearted apology is so great that the publication of the reply and the apology can diminish only in part the damage done to me by the publication in June of the Bentley Glass communication.
I am accordingly forced to resign from the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. I am not willing to continue to sponsor Eugene Rabinowitch as Editor of the Bulletin.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Charges for Apparatus
Professor Roberts has assured me that the Ford Foundation Fund supporting the anesthesia research will be credited with the amounts corresponding to the returnable equipment returned to the stockroom by Arthur Robinson and the other students working during the summer of 1963, and also that the fund will be credited for similar items returned in the summer of 1962, in case that investigation shows that this credit was not given at that time.
He has said that it is likely that a reasonable handling charge will be assessed against the fund.
I ask that you look over the remaining pieces of equipment, not yet returned, to select those that you think will be used in connection with the anesthesia re-search in the near future. Please return those items that you do not select for this purpose, in order that credit may be given to the fund for these items.
Professor Roberts has asked that, in case that we operate a similar project next summer, a special arrangement be made with the stockroom beforehand, under which the items that are checked out would not be charged against the fund at the time that they are charged out, but those that are charged out and not returned at the end of the summer would then be charged against the fund. Will you please keep this in mind next Spring?
