Dear Pete:
I take it that you aren't spending the summer in Pasadena after all, since you aren't there by now. I talked to Mom and to Linie on the phone last night. Linus seemed in good spirits, but it is hard to tell over the phone. Did your toys show up alright? I insured the parcel, so let me know if they don't show up, and I will file a claim.
Linus intimated that you don't seem too anxious to be rid of the Merc. I don't blame you. I have, of course, had some interest in the machine, although no money. I wonder if you might be receptive to the following type of proposition. I propose that you and I form a sort of partnership with respect to the car, and that I shall sometime begin restoring it. Then, if at some time it must be sold, we would share the proceeds in proportion with our respective investments. Furthermore, we might agree that, in the event one of us wants to sell out the other has the option to buy for the dollar investment of the one. Anyway, details can be worked out in time, if you like the idea at all. This sort of arrangement would allow us to keep and enjoy the old crate, and restore it, yet would spread the financial burden of maintaining it a little thinner. Let me know if you are at all interested in this fantastic scheme.
I am learning to touch type on a departmental IBM. I can still type faster with two fingers, but I can see that with practice this way is better.
Your old Porsche apparently has gear box trouble. Linus said that he may never get insurance money for his wrecked Super 90, and mumbled something about sending me the drive gear, ie engine, and gear box, to fit to your old Porsche. It would give it a touch of what it needs. I went to local yokel road races the other day. Pretty humorous, especially the formula junior Cooper that blew off all the big modifieds, until the rain stopped.
I am doing an experiment now, and have to keep jumping up to take samples, read optical densities, etc. Therefore this letter, to say nothing about the experiment, will probably be even less organized than usual.
I saw my friend E. C. Lingafelter this morning. Ever since your infamous visit he says hello every time we meet on campus. My grad student friends over there in Chemistry still talk about your talk. Apparently you made some sort of impression.
Now I have finished the experiment, so I can type uninterrupted. Work goes slow as hell. My target for finishing is the New Year, but I have learned that it is hazardous to make predictions. I'd better get done fairly soon, though, because my fellowship runs out in September, and I will have to go back to departmental funds, which will result in a salary cut. Also, post-doc stipends look damn attractive. Yesterday was Cheryl's sixth, and poor Lucy had to entertain the neighborhood small fry. I guess that her party was a success, though, and she has a lot of new paper dolls. I bought her a large trike, with a 20 inch front wheel, and new she tears up and down the driveway. Their old trikes were passed along, and Crelly has already rolled out into the street. Perhaps it will teach him to be a little more cautious. Crelly is quite adept, though, more so than the girls were at his age. Natural superiority, I guess. Soon I can get a go-kart for him (and me).
Well, time to go.
Much love --
Crellin

Dear Dr. Brooks:
I thank you for writing to me.
I must, however, tell you that I do not believe in God, and I am opposed to religion to the extent that it is based on dogmatism and supernaturalism, and opposed to reason.
With best wishes, I am

Dear Linus,
Thank you very much for your letter of the 22nd June and for the cheque. I was rather sad and a little disturbed that you had not written to me, and was very pleased to have your letter. I hope you get a chance to come back and stay a little longer and see a little more.
I do not see why you should send me all the $350 since you did the work and I just went along for the ride, but now that you have I shall keep it thank you very much.
The Sherwood S-3000 II tuner sounds excellent and if feasible perhaps you should just post it off to me. I will have to pay duty on it, I should think at 20% of value or something: so it should be marked second hand and cheap. Pa says he does not think they will be coming over for some time so I guess they will not be able to carry it. I enjoy the BBC very much and miss not having a good radio. I certainly would like very much to have it.
I have been working on my Tandberg and it goes reasonably well now. I must do some work on the rest of the system, one or two things don't work and it needs a general tune up, but I hope to get a chance to do this in the near future.
Thank you very much for the Merck Manual and for the two books by De Ropp which have arrived. We use the manual a great deal in family medicine and I have become quite interested psychopharmacology. I shall give one copy to my shrinkers. I should appreciate your sending me such material as you come across on this subject.
I shall try to explain to you sometime what I think LSD does, and whether it has done anything to me. I think it has.
With much love

Pasadena 8
California
4th July, 1963.
Dear Daddy,
I was very pleased to get your letter of the 25th June. I did not know that you had been at the ranch (though I decided you probably were away) and had been disappointed not to hear from you.
I did not mean to imply that you had a duty to me. I think it is obvious at the age of 32 that you do not have any duties whatsoever to me. I think the relationship should not be one of duty but rather of freedom.
I am very pleased that you say you are going to try to make decisions in such a way as to cause you and Mamma the maximum pleasure, satisfaction and happiness. It seems to me the only sensible criteria. I myself am going to try to make decisions on a similar basis, and feel that the way I can help those about me increase their happiness most is by doing what I can to make me happy. My concept of your views of yourself and the world are so clouded by other peoples concepts of you that I have difficulty knowing whether the impressions I remember of you are correct. Nevertheless, my impression is that you may not have used these criteria twenty years ago.
It occurred to me some time ago, after 30 years of incompetence, that in all the many things that I would like to do, some serious with a social value and some just to give me pleasure, the transfer of money from one place to another is usually involved; that is, someone has to pay the bill. I have been trying for 30 years to get out of paying the bill. I have decided that I could contribute a lot to many people and to society. And to myself. I also decided that in order for me to be happy I would have to start accomplishing things, things that I wanted to do. I thought that the blocks that I have against getting things done are so strong that I must do everything possible in order to help myself actually do things. For example I decided I could work better with a dictaphone and a little girl with a typewriter at the other end. Consequently, I bought a machine and a typewriter and a neighbor types for me. I think these things have helped me. I still have great trouble producing papers, but at least I keep up roughly with my correspondence. Someone has to pay for all these things. The University will not; I consider their standards of secretarial assistance for Professors Nyholm and Lonsdale to be completely inadequate. So does Professor Nyholm. Furthermore, if I want to go on holiday with my family someone must pay for this. The salaries in British Universities are such that I cannot cover what I consider necessary and reasonable expenditure from my salary. Consequently I must look for other means of making money.
Like you, however, I wish to spend the minimum amount of time necessary doing things I do not want to do just to make money which allow me to do the things that I do want to do which are nonetheless of value to me and others.
In almost all ways you are my greatest asset. If I need advice, help, knowledge, money, almost anything, you are my greatest single asset. Consequently, when I discover that I have to make money it is only sensible and reasonable that I consider ways of making use of my assets. If I could think of a way for you to do something that would make you happy and make me money it is only sensible for me to suggest it. I do not think I would want money at the expense of your happiness.
If I could think of a way for me to do something that would make you happy and me money then it is sensible for me to consider it too but not if it would make me too unhappy. I think writing a High School Chemistry Text comes in this class. I cannot possibly write such a book, with you or with anyone else. It is only properly your province. I could write a book with you on some subject in which I was the major contributor, contributor in almost all ways such as it was something (Cont. on Air letter 2)

(Air Letter No. 2)
that I wanted to do, about something I knew a good deal and could teach to other people. I do not know enough about Chemistry. The block which I have against doing things with you, which I think is not your fault, can only be overcome by our doing something for which I am the primary impetus.
Professor E.D.Hughes, the big Welshman who took the Chair upon C.K.Ingold's retirement died on Sunday from cancer of the stomach or some similar cause. Though I did not understand him very well and put him in the class of authority, I am sorry to lose him. He was always very good to me. The future of the Chair is uncertain, but I think it pretty likely that R.S. Nyholm will be appointed.
With love from
Peter

Reverend Canon L. John Collins
2 Amen Court
London, E. C. 4
England
Dear John:
I thank you for your letter of 17 June and the copy of your letter of that day to Arnoni. Ava Helen and I are grateful to you, indeed, for not adding to the criticism that we have been receiving because of our article on the Oxford Conference, but instead giving some really significant support to us.
I don't know what the basis for our statement about forty observers having been invited is, except that my memory was that you had mentioned forty observers in your talk to the conference.
I think that it is shocking that the Continuing Committee of the Confederation has not asked you to participate in the work of the Continuing Committee or of its administrative section in London.
I didn't see the article in the Peace Hews about the World Peace Council, because I do not ordinarily receive Peace News. I plan to send in a subscription.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

9th July, 1963.
Dear Crellin,
Thank you very much for your letter of the 2nd July and for the toys which have come. I am sorry not to get a letter off to you about them earlier but things have been hectic and my correspondence techniques have gone for a burton.
I would really rather like to get rid of that Merc. It doesn't do me any good there and I won't ever use it again and I could use the money. I do not wish to restore the darn thing and don't think you should spend your time doing it either. If you can afford large amounts of time why don't you spend it doing things that are more fun like sailing, making love, making money. I do not know why Linus indicated that I am not anxious to get rid of it. I have other to me more important things to worry about. I would much rather have the money.
Perhaps the old Porsche ought to have its gear box fixed. It probably wouldn't cost very much and then the car might work. If Linus would supply a good engine and drive train that would easily fit in, then perhaps that ought to be put in.
Thank you again for the toys, I shall figure out a way of getting some money to you sometime. We are having lots of fun with them.
My house is going terribly slowly. I wish it would go faster because I want to get into it.
Julia is a bit unwell but I guess she staggers on. The children are fine. They grow up very quickly.
With much love,

Dear Dr. Carpenter:
I thank you for your letter, containing your question about addictive drugs.
It is my opinion that the considerable degree of specificity shown by the addictive drugs is a strong indication together with their chemical structure, that they act through the formation of hydrogen bonds - that is, that the mode of their interaction is considerably different from that of the physical anesthetics.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Professor Harry Kalven, Jr.
Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions
Box 4068
Santa Barbara, California
Dear Professor Kalven:
I thank you for your answer to my letter.
I am interested that you agree that Bentley Glass misinterpreted my statements about fallout.
I feel that I cannot accept your statement that I am completely wrong in turning a somewhat technical intellectual controversy into a conspiracy to damage my scientific reputation.
My complaint all along has been that Bentley Glass, with the approval of Rabinowitch, has made critical statements about me, without giving any of the evidence that might make it into a technical intellectual controversy. His last letter, June 1963, is the first in which he has made any statement about the technical basis of his criticism of me.
I must say that I do not think that these matters are trifles. I point to the pattern of action by the Bulletin - the publication of the Helen Allison article (for which the Bulletin published an apology), the publication of the first Bentley Glass article, the initial refusal by Rabinowitch and long delay in publishing my reply, and now the publication of the Glass letter, containing false statements that could easily have been checked, either by the editor or by me, if the letter had been brought to my attention, as I had suggested, without knowing that Glass had submitted an article, when I wrote to the Bulletin in March.
I cannot agree with you in your saying that you do not think that a formal apology is called for, nor do I agree in your statement that the controversy is highly unprofitable at this stage because Glass and I are now at least in agreement. Glass and I maybe in agreement, but the readers of the Bulletin are not aware of it, because of the false or misleading statements contained in the Bentley Glass letter published in June.
Here, I emphasize that I may recognize that Glass and I are in agreement, and you know it, because I have called it to your attention; but the readers of the Bulletin do not know it, because most of them will without doubt accept the statements made by Glass in his published letter at face value.
I am angry, with both Glass and Rabinowitch. I might well be willing to change my letter, communicated for publication in the Bulletin. I feel strongly, however, that the editors of the Bulletin have behaved in a highly improper way, in publishing the Bentley Glass letter without checking it sufficiently to discover that the statements in it are false, and I feel strongly that an apology to me should be published by the Bulletin, together with my letter.
My acquaintance with Glass is slight. Several people have told me that they consider him to be a good man, and that they find it difficult to explain his behavior. On the other hand, I have known Rabinowitch for thirty-three years. I find it hard to excuse him. Probably the excuse is the one that he gave to me in person - that during recent years Glass has been a very close friend of his, and that he had the duty to protect him.
There is no doubt that my reputation for reliability has been damaged by the publication of the Glass articles - several people have spoken to me about this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Brigadier General Hugh B. Hester
30 Lapham Lane
Berkeley 8, California
Dear Hugh,
I am not sure that I have permission to use your first name, but General Hester sounds much too officious for a title in view of what I want to say to you, so I am going to be very disrespectful and use your first name. We were glad to get the letter from you and the material concerning your affair with Homer Jack. I was particularly glad to have the reprint of your article, Peace Warriors, and I mean to order some and send them to people to whom I think they would be educational.
In our article in the Minority of One about the Oxford Conference, we did not put in all of the things which happened which were really obnoxious on the part of the American delegation. For example, they did not let us know that the American delegation was having a meeting on the first day and did not tell Canon Collins that we had arrived. They were always going off in a huddle without letting us know about it. Homer Jack did object to seating us and he objected to the seating of Ruth Gage Colby.
I think there is not much to be gained by going over all of these old matters, but I must say that I feel very much concerned about the peace movement because I saw so thoroughly in Oxford what can happen when a delegation is selected for one purpose and where an effort is made to keep out all dissenting voice. These people used Homer Jack as a front because he is so crude and is willing to do anything no matter how rude and vulgar it is, but the real people who are, I think, more dangerous than Homer Jack are the others in that group who were just as unscrupulous in misusing parliamentary procedures and who were unwilling to let enough time be given to the foreign delegates who had to deal with the English language.
We have had letters from a number of people who say they agree completely with us, who the official American delegation, as selected by Robert Gilmore, who, by the way, I think is much more dangerous than Homer Jack, but the real person that we need to be worried about is A. J. Muste. And to a lesser extent, because he is much less intelligent, Alfred Hasler. I am dictating, Hugh, on a dictaphone and so I make some errors. I hope you will overlook them. The previous sentence should say that this American delegation, in their reports, say that all of these delegates voted with them and were of a similar opinion. I believe this is not true.
We wish very much that you would come and see us here in Pasadena and if we do come to San Francisco before the first of September, we shall surely get in touch with you. There is some likelihood that we may do this and I hope that we do.
With best wishes to you and I hope that you are having a good summer.
Sincerely,
Ava Helen Pauling

Dear Bill:
I have examined the reprints by Ungar that have just reached me.
So far as I can tell, the experimental work is alright. The interpretation of the results in relation to protein denaturation seems to me not to be very straightforward. Perhaps the work on available sulfhydryl groups is reasonably good indication of protein denaturation or change in configuration.
In general, my conclusion is that the work described in these papers represents an attack on a difficult problem that is only partially successful. It is hard for me to say whether further work along these lines would give really valuable results or not.
The problem of protein structure in relation to physiological activity is a very important one, and it is good to have people working on it. There are some promising methods of attack being used now. I am not sure that I could describe Ungar's methods as promising, but there is, of course, the chance that he could make a significant contribution by continuing the work.
Sincerely yours,

Miss Beatrice Kornitzer
Assistant Secretary
The Faraday Society
London, W.C.1., England
Dear Miss Kornitzer:
In your letter you have said that the Banker's Order on Barclays Bank Ltd., Oxford, which I sent to you has been returned with a note "No account at High Street, Oxford.”
On reference to my records, I find that I have an account in Barclays Bank, Ltd., 54 Cornmarket Street, Oxford.
I have heard about the inefficiency of British banks, and have already experienced it with Barclays Bank on two earlier occasions. I am not surprised that Barclays Bank at High Street, Oxford, is unable to enter into communication with Barclays Bank at Cornmarket Street, Oxford.
I am sorry that you should have been put to extra trouble.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Studies of Complexing
I suggest that you consider using a partition technique for studying complexes of iodoform with proteins, polypeptides, and other substances in aqueous solution. You could make a standard solution of iodoform (or other substance in which you were interested) in cyclohexane or some other solvent with slight solubility in water and determine the relation of extinction coefficient to concentration in this solvent (which should be saturated with water). A quantity of this solution could then be brought into equilibrium with the aqueous solution, in definite volume ratio. After equilibrium has been achieved, the extinction coefficient could be determined for the nonaqueous solution. This determination would give the amount of iodoform that had gone into the aqueous solution, and would also give the activity of the iodoform. Thus you could work at activities much below that of the crystalline substance, and avoid many difficulties that you have been having.

Dear Hans:
I have agreed to some revision of my letter, and have been told by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists that it will appear in the September issue.
I strongly feel the injustice of the action of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist in publishing this second communication by Bentley Glass, in which statements that are clearly unjustified and essentially false are made about me.
I enclose a copy of a letter that I have just sent to Rabinowitch, in which I mention again my expectation that a suitable apology by the Bulletin will be published.
I regret that I have had to trouble you about this matter, but I have been forced to do so by the shocking behavior of Glass and Rablnowitch.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mr. Stoff:
I am grateful to you and Miss Christa Clausen for your letter, and for the gift to me of six badges that were used by a German War Resister between 1912 and 1933. With best regards, I am

Paper on Theory of Anesthesia
I suggest that we publish a detailed paper on the molecular interpretation of the narcotic partial pressures of anesthetic agents.
The main point would be the discussion of the logarithm of narcotic partial pressure in relation to mole refraction and to size and shape of molecules. I think that the curve on the right of Figure 4 of my paper refers mainly to molecules that are spherical in shape. I believe that the curve should be a series of segments of curves, corresponding to the dodecahedron, the 14-hedron, and the 28-hedron, and perhaps a larger polyhedra that are nearly spherical.
Molecules that are elongated would have trouble fitting into these polyhedra neatly, and their point should lie above these curves.
I think that it would be worthwhile to calculate or measure, from models, the dimensions of the different molecules and to describe these molecules in terms of their eccentricities, as well as their molecular volumes and mole refractions. Then we could attempt to calculate the segments of theoretical curves, mentioned above - I have already begun this job. The rest of the job would involve collecting as extensive information as possible about narcotic activity of different substances.

Dear Professor Mukherjee:
I am happy to join with you and other members of the Sixtieth Birth Anniversary Celebration Committee for Professor R. P. Mitra, on the completion of his sixtieth year.
Over the past four decades I have observed with interest the continued effectiveness of Professor Mitra in his research activities in macromolecular chemistry and structural chemistry. I have been especially pleased that he and his students should have made important contributions to our understanding of proteins and the clay minerals, and in general to fields of work in which I have been especially interested during the period of my scientific activity, which was largely coincided with Professor Mitra’s.
I extend my congratulations to Professor Mitra on his having completed one period of his life as a scientist and teacher, and I wish him continued good fortune and happiness during the next period.
Sincerely yours,

The Tetramer of Lithium Ethyl
In Acta Cryst 16, 681 (1963) there is a paper on this subject by H. Dietrich. I think that his molecule is to be considered an electron deficient substance, and that we might be able to discuss it with use of the resonating valence bond theory. Would you see how many ways the valence bonds could be put in the molecule, and what the predicted bond numbers are?
The molecule can be described as involving a tetrahedron of lithium atoms. The first carbon atom in each ethyl group is bonded not only to the other carbon atom and to two hydrogen atoms but also to two lithium atoms. The carbon-lithium bond lengths correspond to about half bonds, and the lithium-lithium bond lengths to about half bonds, although two of the six are stronger than the other four.
Linus Pauling: hpg
P.S. Perhaps a discussion of this molecule could be included in the same paper with the dimer of aluminum trimethyl.

Mrs. Elna Poppe
Øvre Slottsgate 2
Oslo, Norway
Dear Mrs. Poppe,
My wife and I were happy to receive a note congratulating us on our fortieth wedding anniversary, from you and Director Jahn. This was a very pleasant day for us.
Now I cannot refrain from writing you, not only to thank you and Director Jahn for your congratulations to us, but also to tell you how happy we are, as you doubt are also, that the three great nuclear powers have finally formulated a bomb-test agreement. We feel almost certain that the treaty will be ratified by the Senate of the United States, and that many other nations will subscribe to it.
The problem now is that of the Chinese Peoples Republic. I do not think that there is any chance that China will sign the bomb-test agreement unless she is made a member nation of the United Nations, and given a seat on the Security Council. There is going to be a long struggle ahead before further international agreements are made that will permit us to feel safe.
President Kennedy's address to the people of the United States gave us pleasure, also, because he had included in his address many statements closely similar to those that we have been making during recent years.
My wife joins me in sending best regards to you and Director Jahn.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Shape Factor in Anesthesia
I think that it would be worthwhile for you to investigate the solubilities of substances in water, in order to get information about the effect of the shape factor in anesthesia.
I think that we can assume that nonpolar substances dissolved in water occupy cavities similar to those in their clathrate crystals. The same shape factors and other factors that affect their solubility could then be expected also to affect their anesthetic activity.
For example, I think that neopentane is more soluble in water, at a standard partial pressure, than isopentane, and that isopentane is more soluble than n-pentane. The relative values of partial pressure needed to achieve the same solubility of these three substances, which have very nearly the same polarizability, might be expected to apply also to the narcotizing partial pressures.
I think, too, that tert -butyl alcohol and the other butanols show similar relative solubilities in water. The structure of water is complicated enough so that we might make use of these results, even though the hydroxyl group is involved in forming hydrogen bonds.
I shall be pleased to discuss these ideas with you.
