Professor Harry Kalven, Jr.

Santa Barbara, California
Dear Professor Kalven:
I thank you for your answer to my letter.
I am interested that you agree that Bentley Glass misinterpreted my statements about fallout.
I feel that I cannot accept your statement that I am completely wrong in turning a somewhat technical intellectual controversy into a conspiracy to damage my scientific reputation.
My complaint all along has been that Bentley Glass, with the approval of Rabinowitch, has made critical statements about me, without giving any of the evidence that might make it into a technical intellectual controversy. His last letter, June 1963, is the first in which he has made any statement about the technical basis of his criticism of me.
I must say that I do not think that these matters are trifles. I point to the pattern of action by the Bulletin - the publication of the Helen Allison article (for which the Bulletin published an apology), the publication of the first Bentley Glass article, the initial refusal by Rabinowitch and long delay in publishing my reply, and now the publication of the Glass letter, containing false statements that could easily have been checked, either by the editor or by me, if the letter had been brought to my attention, as I had suggested, without knowing that Glass had submitted an article, when I wrote to the Bulletin in March.
I cannot agree with you in your saying that you do not think that a formal apology is called for, nor do I agree in your statement that the controversy is highly unprofitable at this stage because Glass and I are now at least in agreement. Glass and I maybe in agreement, but the readers of the Bulletin are not aware of it, because of the false or misleading statements contained in the Bentley Glass letter published in June.
Here, I emphasize that I may recognize that Glass and I are in agreement, and you know it, because I have called it to your attention; but the readers of the Bulletin do not know it, because most of them will without doubt accept the statements made by Glass in his published letter at face value.
I am angry, with both Glass and Rabinowitch. I might well be willing to change my letter, communicated for publication in the Bulletin. I feel strongly, however, that the editors of the Bulletin have behaved in a highly improper way, in publishing the Bentley Glass letter without checking it sufficiently to discover that the statements in it are false, and I feel strongly that an apology to me should be published by the Bulletin, together with my letter.
My acquaintance with Glass is slight. Several people have told me that they consider him to be a good man, and that they find it difficult to explain his behavior. On the other hand, I have known Rabinowitch for thirty-three years. I find it hard to excuse him. Probably the excuse is the one that he gave to me in person - that during recent years Glass has been a very close friend of his, and that he had the duty to protect him.
There is no doubt that my reputation for reliability has been damaged by the publication of the Glass articles - several people have spoken to me about this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg
