Mr. Stanley Schaefer
W. H. Freeman and Company
660 Market Street
San Francisco, California
Dear Stan:
I have had a talk with Professor A. Haagen-Smit about the matter of translation of General Chemistry into Dutch.
Haagen-Smit says that it would not be wise to have the book, in Dutch translation, published by a Belgium firm. He asks, why should not Elsevier, as an outstanding Dutch publisher, be interested in publishing a Dutch translation of the book?
He feels that Mr. C. G. Hoste may not be a good man to make the translation. In any case, he says that no arrangement should be made for him to make the translation unless it is approved by Professor Havinga or Professor Ketelaar. Both Havinga and Ketelaar worked in our laboratories, a number of years ago. In fact, Havinga or Ketelaar might be able to suggest some better person to do the translation into Dutch, or you might be interested to write to Elsevier, and they might suggest somebody.
Haagen-Smit was horrified at the suggestion that the chapters on organic chemistry and biochemistry be left out of the Dutch translation. He said that Hoste must be living in the past.
I have the feeling that the best thing to do about a Dutch translation is to wait until the new edition of General Chemistry has been prepared, and perhaps to have the translation made from the manuscript, rather than to wait for the book to be printed - it could be checked with the printed book, before publication in Holland.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dr. Warren Weaver
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
630 Fifth Avenue
New York 20, New York
Dear Warren:
I am writing to ask you if you think that it would be worth while for the California Institute of Technology to make application to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for a grant that would pay my salary for about five years, beginning next year, and would relieve me of duties to the Institute.
Last year the suggestion was made to me by a scientist in government service that an application of this sort be made to the National Institutes of Health or the National Science Foundation, or both. It is my understanding that at that time three such grants had been made, all three, I think, by the National Institutes of Health. One grant was made to the University of Chicago, to pay the salary of Leo Szilard, and another to Stanford University, to pay the salary of Kees Van Niel. I have forgotten who the third man supported by such a grant is.
There are several reasons why I am interested in having a roving professorship or special professorship of this sort. One reason is that I want to have more time by myself to think about certain problems. I find that it is difficult for me to give proper attention to some scientific questions that interest me very much, so long as I am in residence in Pasadena. There are interruptions of many kinds that distract me, probably more than when I was younger. I have found that the time that I spend at the ranch that my wife and I have on the California coast between San Simeon and Big Sur has been especially productive for me, in permitting me to think about certain problems day after day and in some cases to reach some sort of solution.
There are a good number of problems connected with the structure of molecules and the nature of the chemical bond that I should like to attack.
Also, I am hoping to make some further contributions in the fields of molecular biology and molecular medicine. The last job that I have done in these fields was the formulation of a molecular theory of general anesthesia, three years ago. I am planning to spend some time, probably as a visitor, in some suitable medical school, perhaps several, and in some centers of biological research, to see what sort of information I might pick up that would help me or stimulate me to mate some contribution in these fields.
Over the whole period of my scientific activity I have been interested in the question of the nature of metals and alloys, and I have published a number of papers about a theory of the structure of metals and alloys. I have some more ideas along these lines, and I plan to devote a good bit of time to this field.
I may say that I have got rather tired of giving courses, and I do not want to do administrative work any more. Also, I have decided that it is better for me to devote my remaining time to theoretical work than to the supervision of experimental work, and I propose to give up the programs of experimental work, and I propose to give up the programs of experimental work that are now being carried out under my supervision,.
If the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation would not be interested in an application of this sort, I shall ask the California Institute of Technology to make the application to the National Institutes of Health and perhaps also to the national Science Foundation. I am writing to you, however, because of the feeling that I have that we are better off - that is, that the United States is better off - if we do not leave the support of scientific research and other activities entirely or preponderantly to the federal government. I enclose a copy of my address Chemistry and the World of Today, which was my presidential address in 1949 to the American Chemical Society. In this address I gave some arguments about the danger of bureaucratic domination, if the federal government provided too large a fraction of support of fundamental scientific research.
I still feel that it is wise to have support of scientific research and scholarly activity by industry and private foundations, as well as by the federal government, and it is for this reason that I am sending this letter to you.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

- Letter from LP to Professor Bundy. [Filed under LP Peace: (Assorted Vietnam Peace Research and Activism Materials, 1962-1972), Box #6.006, Folder #6.3]
Dear Professor Bundy:
In a speech to the American Management Association on January 31, 1962, you asked for citizen “interest, action, understanding and support" for our government's efforts to better international relations. We agree that our government should work urgently for improved relations with other nations, and that all citizens ought to make serious efforts to understand and to support such a program. But, at this critical moment, we find ourselves unable to fulfill this important duty because we are unable to understand our government's stated policy in Southeast Asia.
As educators we feel a special responsibility in this regard because our duty to society requires us to help our fellow citizens understand the role of the United States in the world today. We have, moreover, an added responsibility because several members of the nation's community of scholars, yourself among them, who serve the government at the policy making level, do so in fulfillment of the intellectual and moral standards which the public rightfully associates with the academic community. As scholars we are accustomed to questioning and discussing our colleagues' views the better to understand them. Yet we, together with the entire American public, have had no opportunity to hear fully and to examine critically the views of yourself and other scholars who now help to guide our government's policy in Southeast Asia.
Up to now, we have not been able to develop our own views on United States policy in Southeast Asia because that policy has been revealed only piecemeal by a series of military actions. Nevertheless, we are determined to exercise our right to examine this policy critically and to discuss it publicly. For this reason we, the undersigned, urge you to come before the academic community in an open meeting here and explain and discuss with us the assumptions, intentions and goals which guide the United States and its conduct of the war in Southeast Asia. If the afternoon and evening of April l8th is a convenient time, we would appreciate an early acceptance of our invitation or, if this date proves inconvenient, we would be obliged if you would suggest another at your earliest convenience. We are aware of course, of the urgent demands on your time, but we believe that a public accounting of the government's policy in Southeast Asia represents a prior claim on the time of those who guide this policy.
We believe that such an accounting will allow us, in fact, to discuss with you at least the following questions as well as others raised by the recent "White Paper."
Who is the enemy? Although we have not declared war, we are engaged in military action against insurgent groups in South Vietnam and against the territory of North Vietnam and Laos. In some instances, United States aircraft have attacked or supported an attack on undisclosed targets, so that the specific "enemy" is not even indicated.
Who are our allies? On September 30, 1963, before the World Affairs Conference, Albany, New York, you said that "...it would be folly for the United States to neglect, or to regard with indifference, political developments of recent months which raise questions about the ability of the Government and the people of South Vietnam to support each other effectively in their contest with Communism....It is and must be the policy of the United States Government to make clear its interest in whatever improvements it judges to be necessary, always of course with a proper regard for responsibilities which rest in the first instance upon the people of South Vietnam." What "improvements" in the popular base of the South Vietnam government, clearly required now more than ever, do you judge to be necessary? How are they likely to come about? Is it possible that the Liberation Front (Viet Cong) and the people of South Vietnam do "support each other effectively?"
Under what conditions would the United States support the participation of the Liberation Front in a future government of South Vietnam, or encourage negotiations toward such participation? Would we continue, for example, to support the Mekong Delta project in the event that the Liberation Front participated in a future government of South Vietnam?
What kind of proof must North Vietnam provide to convince us that that country is not intervening or has ceased to intervene in South Vietnam? How will this proof be validated? Is the United States willing and able to offer some kind of quid pro quo?
President Johnson has said that "no negotiated settlement in Vietnam is possible, as long as the Communists hope to achieve victory by force." On another occasion he said that we seek no more than a return to the essentials of the Geneva agreement of 1954. Does this mean that, if the Communists should seek victory by the ballot box, we would support all-Vietnam free elections in accordance with these agreements?
According to the Office of Public Services, Department of State document, Situation in Viet-Nam, "our and the Vietnamese response (to the provocations ordered and directed by the Hanoi regime) was carefully limited to military areas which are supplying men and arms for aggression in South Viet-Nam and was thus entirely defensive in nature." Why has this military policy in South Vietnam recently undergone a change? Why do some bombings of North Vietnam fail now to be even so limited? How does this policy justify the bombing of radar installations at the northern border of North Vietnam, a direction which has no bearing on military action in South Vietnam? Some commentators have concluded that the hidden agenda of our policy is to provoke China into action which would allow the United States to bomb targets in that country. Is there any substance to this assertion?
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours,

11th June, 1963.
Dear Pa,
Thank you for your letter of 29th May. I am sorry you lost your suit and hope that you win on appeal.
I think that we shall not be coming to California this summer, unfortunately. I have been notified nothing about my Research Grant from the National Institutes of Health* and while I think it has been approved and might well be given the Bureau of the Budget has frozen expenditure by the NIH in the United Kingdom due to the dollar exchange problem. This means that my grant, if any, is indefinitely delayed. There is nothing I can do about this because I did not cover myself by applying to several sources for support. At any rate I have given up plans to come to California for the summer.
In your letter you replied to only one of my points. Is this because you think my second point is false, irrelevant, unimportant, or what? I think the implications of the concept are difficult and unclear, both for you and for me, though probably easier for you than for me, and I am experimenting at a little clarification.
Well, I know it would be a good thing for me to take whatever time is necessary out in order to write a book with your help which would repay me so well. But I cannot, I am not a chemist, do not know how to write books and cannot be a second you. If I were to write a book, I would write a book on computing or something that I knew something about. I can, and I hope will, make contributions to the world and will make enough money to stay alive but probably not enough to really enjoy myself while doing it. I cannot serve as a means of getting things from your head on to paper, and I do not know enough to do it by myself.
I do not understand why you feel it is so important that you be repaid on your investment rather than that I be repaid on your investment. Do you think it is bad for my soul? Or your soul?
I might say that I love, like and admire you very much. I am rather sorry I shall not spend some time with you this summer because I think we would get along well, have a lot to say to each other, and enjoy each other.
With love from,
Peter

Dear Mr. Bernstein:
I thank you for taking the trouble to come to Pasadena in order that my wife and I could see your film.
I have thought about the film a good bit. As I said to you, I have some difficulty in putting myself in the place of an auditor (viewer) who does not have much background of information about nuclear war. However, I have reached the conclusion that the film could be made much more effective than it is at present by some editing, to avoid repetition and to emphasize the argument, and also to clarify it. I have the impression that a person without much background in the field would be confused by the film, and would not understand what its meaning is.
Although I would like to be of help to you, and I appreciate how great the sacrifice is that you have made in working in this way in the cause of peace, I feel that I cannot make a satisfactory statement about the film.
With regret at this decision, which, however, seems to be the only one that I can make, I am
Sincerely yours,

15 June 1963
Dr. Aaron Ganz
Executive Secretary
Research Career Award Committee
National Institute of General Medical Sciences
Department of Health, Education, and Welfare
Public Health Service
Bethesda 14, Maryland
Dear Dr. Ganz:
I have known Dr. Barbara W. Low since 1948. She worked for one year in the California Institute of Technology, under my general supervision, and I have seen her from time to time since then.
I my opinion she has a large amount of intellectual ability and she is well trained in the field of X-ray crystallography, with special reference to the investigation of protein crystals. Her training was obtained in the main from Professor Dorothy Hodgkin, who is one of the world's leaders in this field.
The review articles that Dr. Low has written show that she has a thorough understanding of the field of protein structure, and also give evidence of her judgment.
I do not think that she has shown evidence of unusual originality or of unusual drive. She has not as yet made any outstanding contribution to science. She has the ability and training to do a workmanlike study in the field of the structure of proteins, and I think now that the techniques have been developed by other people, there is the possibility that Dr. Low would apply these techniques in the determination of the detailed molecular structure of one or more globular proteins. The field of the structure of proteins is such an important one that it would be worthwhile to encourage her and other investigators to carry on in this field. Dr. Low might well be able to make a worthwhile contribution, but I would rate her below several other X-ray crystallographers interested in the structure of proteins, with respect to her likelihood of success.
It is my opinion that Dr. Low collaborates very well with her coworkers.

Dear Mr. Wu:
I am pleased to have received your letter and the solution that you have carried out of the example on page 405 of my book General Chemistry.
I do not find anything wrong with your treatment. Your answer, 515 seconds, differs only a little from my answer, 513 seconds. The difference is due to the fact that you made a precise calculation, by integrating the rate equation, whereas, in order to avoid using the calculus, I took the initial slope as the average slope for the first few seconds.

Dear Pete
As usual I am very tardy in writing. I enjoyed my stay with you very much, and don't
let my ill humor of the last evening spoil it. There were many other factors
weighing on me at the time and actually I enjoyed the outing to Brighton. I was
quite tired from the preceding two weeks and the emotional strain thereof.
I got the grand sum of $350 from Bob Browne for all that stuff from Mrs. Beasley (the
extra being for transportation, etc.) and I feel it should all go to you. It is
little enough.
Yes, I am still connected with the Audio Center (although now I sure could use the
money which I can't get back out because no one will buy the stock which is
currently only about 60% of book value. At the moment they have a Sherwood S-3000 II
tuner in excellent condition for $45 which I am having packed. I will try to take it
to California with me next week (I'll be there until July 6) and leave it there for
you in case you come through, or if you don't so it can be mailed to you if you want
it, or, if I cant carry it, it will wait here for you to indicate if you want it. In
any case it won't get any farther than California until you indicate if you want
it.
So, subtracting $45 from $350, I am enclosing my check for $305 for you. Thank you
very much, and if you don't want the tuner I’ll send on the $45. An S-3000 III is
scarcer, and you might have to wait some time for one to show up.
I had a fun trip to Japan in May, living a la Japanese, and just this week had house
guests in the form of Shoji Hamada, world famous potter (National Living Treasure)
whom I had met in Japan. He stayed here in my house four days, quite alot of fun for
me. He's having a show in London sometime in early fall; you might look for it, and
go.
There are so many crackpots using LSD that it is hard to do any uncontaminated
research on it. I remain unconvinced, although your suggestion of trying it in
London or California is a good one. Someday, maybe . I still want to come and spend
time running around Gt. Britain; for the moment I can't even get enough spare time
to get down to the beach for a swim, and what the hell kind of life is that in
Hawaii? This summer I'm taking care of the kids all by myself, except for the
housekeeper's help on occasion, so I've got to arrange time pretty fast now.
Be nice if we could meet in California. Last time I talked to the parents they didn't
know your plans.
Much love to all of you. Best wishes on that house of yours, too. Looks like a
lifetime job you've embarked on. I really enjoyed Sarah and Thomas and Julia this
time -- much less feeling of tension. [...]

Washington 25, D. C.
Dear Mr. Chappell:
I again write to you to ask that you consider favorably the application for parole by Mr. Morton Sobell.
Years ago I read the complete transcript of Mr. Sobell’s trial. I then formed the opinion that his sentence was unjustly severe - so much so as possibly to constitute cruel and unusual punishment. I had some doubt, in fact, about his guilt of the crime of conspiracy with which he was charged.
I still hold these opinions, and I urge that you give serious consideration to the possibility of releasing him from prison.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Linus,
I am sorry not to hear from you since your visit to London and hope that you are getting along alright.
Our plans for the summer have changed unfortunately due to a freeze on foreign expenditure by the National Institutes of Health. We are not now planning to spend the summer in California and will not be there to see you. I am rather disappointed, I would like to spend some time with the parents and everyone and get on with the job of producing my instrument. There are, however, many things I can get on with here.
I wish to ask if you are interested in making some property investments in London? You had mentioned once or twice that you wanted to diversify your holdings mainly by investing in property outside the United States. In particular are you interested in joining a venture being undertaken by me and my architect, Leon Carson who lives upstairs in No. 62. We are negotiating for the purchase of a house in Blenheim Crescent (the next street over) and have drawn up plans for its conversion into three family units. I am sending you the general plans of the proposed conversion under separate cover. This house is in the last row backing onto the communal gardens and is in a street just beginning the rise in status which has such a dramatic affect on property value.
It will cost about $K22 to purchase and convert this house, and little more than half for the purchase. Taxes would be about $300 a year and the gross rental income from the three units about $3000 a year.
I think the thing to do would be to form a company with the duties, rights and services due to and from the company for each of the individuals involved carefully written down beforehand.
Let me know if you are interested.
With love from,

Dr. Peter Pauling
62 Elgin Crescent
London, W. 11,
England
Dear Peter:
Mama and I are sorry to learn from your letter that you are not coming to California this summer. We would have been pleased to see you. I have been hoping that Mama would be well enough so that it would not be too much of a strain on her, in case that you stayed with us for some time. I am hoping that she will get some rest this summer and that her health will improve.
In your letter you ask whether I think that your second point is false, irrelevant, unimportant, or what. I am afraid that I didn't keep your letter, and I am not sure that I remember your second point. My memory may be wrong, but I think that your second point was that I have some duty to you, as my son, to provide you with money.
I shall comment on this point, which may be close enough to what you have in mind, and also on the matter of writing a book for use in high school chemistry classes.
I am not interested enough in a high school chemistry book to write such a book, if you are not interested. I can earn enough money for Mama and me in other ways, doing things that interest me more. As a business man, I recognize that the present time is such that a good high school chemistry might make a lot of money; but I do not have enough need for a lot of money to justify my sacrificing my happiness in the amount that would be necessary if I were to write such a book. If you have enough interest, for financial reasons or other reasons, to work on this job, I might feel that it would be worthwhile for me to make the sacrifice of helping; but you have made it pretty clear that you are not interested.
During the last couple of years I have thought a great deal about the matter of alternative ways in which I can spend the remaining years of my life. There are many things that I want to do - so many that I have to decide among them. I want to make the decisions, in cooperation with Mama, in such a way as to be most satisfying to her and to me. I do not know yet what the decisions will be. I am glad that my circumstances are such that I do not need to take on the uninteresting chore of writing a high school text. I am going to try to have the decisions made in such a way as to give Mama the most pleasure and satisfaction during the remaining years of her life, and also to give me as much satisfaction as possible.
I began to write a textbook of general chemistry in 1934, but I wrote only about one chapter. I am sorry now that I did not take time to finish this textbook, because it would have been very helpful, especially for Mama's sake to have had a bigger income during the earlier years of our life. If the war had not come along, I would have published my General Chemistry in 1940 or 1941, according to my plans - I postponed the job of finishing it in order to work on war research.
In answer to your questions, I think that Mama and I need to be repaid, from now on, for any investment of time and energy that we make - we need to be repaid in happiness, not in money.
Mama and I both send you our love. We have pretty much given up any plan for coming to Europe during the next few months. We are thinking about building a house at the ranch - perhaps getting the plans ready this year, and building it next year. One problem is that electricity is not yet available.
Your letter arrived just after we had left for the ranch, where we stayed nine days.
Love from
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Dr. Flatto:
I am pleased to comment on your letter of 20 June.
I think that you are wrong in believing that rain water would be the best water to drink, and that you are wrong in using only distilled water for drinking purposes. The trace minerals in water supplies are valuable to the human organism.
Also, I think that you are wrong in believing that the trace minerals cannot be supplied from inorganic sources. Authorities in the field of nutrition state that iron in the form of inorganic salts is undoubtedly assimilated by human beings. Inorganic iron can be used to control nutritional anemia, especially if a trace of copper is also given. There is some evidence that iron in organic combination in food is assimilated less well than inorganic iron.
There is good evidence that inorganic calcium is assimilated by the human body.
You have quoted me incorrectly about the distribution of atomic fallout. There is more fallout in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere, because the bomb tests have almost entirely been carried out in the Northern Hemisphere.
I am sorry that I shall not be in San Diego (probably also not in Pasadena) on 15 to 21 July.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg

Dear Eleanor:
I enclose the original and a copy of the consent by Francis Hoague for the substitution of you as my attorney.
I have not heard anything about whether or not Mr. Tonkoff signed the consent form. My contract was with Mr. Hoague. Mr. Hoague has not asked me to communicate with Tonkoff about this matter.
I judge that the bond of $250 that needs to be put up will not require me to advance this sum. If it does, please let me know.
Cordially yours,

Professor Hans A. Bethe
Physics Department
Cornell University
Ithaca, New York
Dear Hans:
I am writing to you, the Chairman of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, to ask you to advise me about my remaining a member of the Board.
I feel that I should not remain a member of the Board so long as Eugene Rabinowitch is Editor of the Bulletin.
Rabinowitch has just taken an action that I cannot excuse. He has published in the June 1963 issue of the Bulletin a second attack on me by Bentley Glass in which false and damaging statements are made about me. I cannot believe that Rabinowitch did not know that these statements were false. He did not let me know about this article before publishing it.
For example, Glass accuses me of having incorrectly assumed that fallout is uniformly distributed over the surface of the earth, and he gives reference to page 65 of my book No More War! On that page I reported the result of a calculation based on that assumption; but then in the following sentence I stated what correction should be made because of the inaccuracy in the assumption. It is clearly untrue to refer, as Bentley Glass did, to "the assumption … that fallout is uniformly distributed over the surface of the earth" as an erroneous statement made by me that needed to be corrected.
It is difficult for me to think of an explanation of the action of Bentley Glass in including this point in his communication and of the action of Rabinowitch in publishing the communication containing this statement which is completely false in its implications, and other similar statements.
Other false and misleading allegations about me in the second Glass article are mentioned in the enclosed statement by me.
I enclose a copy of the letter that I have sent to Rabinowitch.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:hpg
