  Dear Dr. Ganz:

  I have known Dr. Barbara W. Low since 1948. She worked for one year in the California Institute of Technology, under my general supervision, and I have seen her from time to time since then.

  I my opinion she has a large amount of intellectual ability and she is well trained in the field of X-ray crystallography, with special reference to the investigation of protein crystals. Her training was obtained in the main from Professor Dorothy Hodgkin, who is one of the world's leaders in this field.

  The review articles that Dr. Low has written show that she has a thorough understanding of the field of protein structure, and also give evidence of her judgment.

  I do not think that she has shown evidence of unusual originality or of unusual drive. She has not as yet made any outstanding contribution to science. She has the ability and training to do a workmanlike study in the field of the structure of proteins, and I think now that the techniques have been developed by other people, there is the possibility that Dr. Low would apply these techniques in the determination of the detailed molecular structure of one or more globular proteins. The field of the structure of proteins is such an important one that it would be worthwhile to encourage her and other investigators to carry on in this field. Dr. Low might well be able to make a worthwhile contribution, but I would rate her below several other X-ray crystallographers interested in the structure of proteins, with respect to her likelihood of success.

  It is my opinion that Dr. Low collaborates very well with her coworkers.
