Dear Henry:
I trust that the information in my telephone call was of some use to you.
In group Extra Chemistry, I felt most doubtful about Schowalter (aside from Campaigne, whom I could not recommend, he seemed the least promising). I also felt that I could give only wale support to Hanson and Marinsky.
I was sorry to hear that Gene Carpenter was not given approval. I do not think that he is in the top rank of x-ray crystallographers, but he has steadily turned out results of value, and he has shown excellent judgment in his work. I recognize that it might well be that he is not in the class of applicants deserving a second appointment.
I was prepared to support Kosower, on the basis of his application and recommendations — I do not know him. I was especially impressed by the description of him as one of the brightest theoretical organic chemists in the country, and as unusually imaginative and inventive.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

20th Century Books

Washington 9, D.C.
Dear Mr. Duhring:
I have been interested to read your book on immortality. I do not have very much to say about it.
I think that I have read two or three science fiction stories based upon the same idea. I think that I remember that in one of them people who had become ill with an incurable disease were frozen, with the idea that they would be resuscitated when a way of treating the disease had been developed.
I may say that I think that it is unlikely that any person who had died could be resuscitated, after having been frozen at some time after death. She damage done to the brain by a few minutes of anoxia is, I think, essentially irreversible.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

3 April 1963
Mr. John Raeburn Green
Boatmen's Bank Building St.
Louis 2, Missouri
Dear Mr. Green:
As I said in my telephone conversation with you, I am willing to come to St. Louis in case that the trial is held on the week of 3 June. I told you that I had not made any engagements. This was an error: I had, in fact, agreed to speak on Tuesday 3 June to the Orange County Medical Society, in a symposium that the Society has arranged, and my participation has been announced. If I have to come to St. Louis I shall, however, get somebody else to speak in my place.
I made the engagement because of a misunderstanding—I thought that the St. Louis case would not be scheduled during that week.
Under separate cover I am sending you a copy of the August 1962 issue of The Minority of One. This issue contains an article by Professor A. Szent-Gyorgyi (a Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine), an article by Sir Robert Watson-Watt, who is the discoverer of radar, an article consisting of excerpts from a December 1958 speech by Senator John F. Kennedy, and an article by me. My article has the title Observations on Aging and Death, and it is devoted in considerable part to a discussion of the damaging effects of smoking cigarettes.
In your letter you ask about the week beginning May 27. I would prefer not to have the case set in this week, because it would require that I not give several of my scheduled lectures in the California Institute of Technology.
Have you succeeded in getting the deposition from Mr. Newhouse? Will the trial be delayed, in the case that you do not get the deposition before 3 June?
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Mr. Charles Spencer Chaplin
Vovey, Vaud
SWITZERLAND
Dear Mr. Chaplin:
I am writing to ask if you would be willing to help in the fight against the acquisition of nuclear weapons by Switzerland, a question that will, I understand, be brought to the people on 26 May 1963.
I enclose a copy of the Oslo Statement, in which the danger to the world that would result from the spread of nuclear weapons is discussed.
I am sending a copy of this letter to say friend Mr. Heinrich Buchbinder, who is a leader in the peace movement in Switzerland, and is one of the three presidents of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms. Mr. Buchbinder lives at Reginastrasse 12, Zurich 2/58 telephone 45 79 28. He is a journalist, and I have been closely associated with him in some of the international peace activities.
I hope that you will find it possible to discuss this matter with Mr. Buchbinder.
I remember with pleasure the one occasion when we were together at a social function in Hollywood.
Sincerely yours,

4 April 1963
Dear Linus
Mama and I were shocked to hear about your serious accident. It must he a terrible experience to come so close to death. We are sorry not to have been able to visit you and help cheer you up.
Our lecture tour went along all right. On about the third day Mama had an elevated temperature, but she was careful not to overwork, and she then began to improve rapidly. All of the meetings were successful - in Chicago there were nearly 2,000 people who came, at $2.00 apiece ($1.00 for students), to hear us. This meeting had been arranged by the American Friends Service Committee itself. We both spoke there, and also at a meeting in the Unitarian Church in Cleveland, which also was successful — by far the biggest crowd that had ever been in the church, they told us. Our other meetings were separate, addressed by either Mama or me.
Then we went to Miami, in order that I might deliver the First Baxter Lecture to the International Anesthesia Research Society. We decided to stay one day longer than we had planned, in order to make a trip through the Everglades, where we were taken by Frank Catchpool's sister and brother-in-law — Frank himself was also with us.
We were happy to have you with us at the ranch, and we wish that you could have stayed longer. We are having trouble getting back for another visit, ourselves. Probably we shall go up there about the tenth of April, for six days.
Much love from

- Letter from LP to Professor G. M. Volkoff, University of British Colombia. [Note from La Force to LP 1963] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (V: Correspondence, 1933-1969) #427.23]
5 April 1963
Professor G. N. Volkoff, Head Physics
Department University of British Columbia
Vancouver, British Columbia,
CANADA
Dear Volkoff:
Dr. Richard La Force has asked me to write a letter of recommendation to you for him.
I have known La Force since he was a first-year college student in my course in general chemistry. He was the outstanding man of the 180 students in the course. He had already obtained a pretty good background of understanding of physics, and he spent part of his time that year building a crude field-emission electron microscope. I saw him a number of times while he was a graduate student in Berkeley, and then, about three years ago, I appointed him Consultant to our research project on the molecular basis of general anesthesia. He collaborated very effectively with Dr. Frank Catchpool in the construction of an apparatus for measurement of the heat capacities of substances, and in general was effective in giving Dr. Catchpool advice about experimental work in this field.
During the past winter he continued to work as Consultant to me, in connection with my research activities, over a period of four months (full time).
La Force seems to me to have unusual ability and to have a fine background of training in physics. I have not made a careful check of his ability in the magnetic resonance field, perhaps mainly because I myself do not have any background of experience in this field. It is my feeling, however, that he would be a very valuable collaborator for anyone who was working in this field.
I judge that he is cooperative and that he gets along well with his coworkers. Dr. Frank Catchpool, who has had some association with him for three years, considers him to be a fine research associate. Professor Ralph Hultgren and Professor Fred Ravitz of the University of California, with whom he has worked for some time, have both written and spoken to me enthusiastically about his abilities, his originality, and his enthusiasm for research. They said that he was especially effective in getting students to work hard on research problems. Both Hultgren and Ravitz are old friends of mine — they both obtained their Ph.D. degrees in the California Institute of Technology, and Hultgren did his work under my direction.
I have not had any opportunity to make an estimate of La Force as a teacher. I surmise that he would he good.
I think that you would find La Force a very valuable collaborator in your work.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Sidney:
I was interested to see your paper as abstracted by the American Chemical Society.
I do not have enough background in kinetics to form a judgment about your statements. You mention an upper limit of 38.3 kcal/mole for the bond dissociation energy of B2H6, and possible lower limits of 35 and 32, on the basis of assumptions about a rate of recombination.
What do you think can be said definitely about the lower limit? You probably know that on page 369 of The Nature of the Chemical Bond I have given an argument leading to the value of 23.9 kcal/mole.
I notice that on page 365 I have a reference to Bauer, Shepp, and McCoy, J.A.C.S. 75, 1003 (1953), who give 32 + 2 kcal/mole for the bond energy.
I think that my argument for 23.9 is not very reliable, and I should like to know what you think the correct value is.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Robert:
I write to congratulate you on the Fermi Award, which you are receiving half a dozen years later than deserved.
I trust that everything is going along well with you. Please give my regards to Kitty.
I have been asked by the officers of the Southern California Civil Liberties Union to extend an invitation to you. The Annual Bill of Rights Dinner of this chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will be held on the evening of Friday 6 December 1963. This is the largest chapter of ACLU in the country, with some 7,000 members. It is probably the most active chapter in the country. It is expected that as many as 1,500 people might attend the dinner, if you were to be the speaker. Is there a possibility that you could accept this invitation?
I know that you have for a long time been interested in and associated with the American Civil Liberties Union, and I hope that you will find it possible to accept the invitation. The Union will of course pay your expenses, in case that you are able to make the trip to Los Angeles.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,

Dr. Hugo Boyko
Secretary General
World Academy of Art and Science
1 Ruppin Street
P. O. Box 534
Rehovot, ISRAEL
Dear Dr. Boyko:
Could you tell me whether or not Professor J. Heyrovsky, of Czechoslovakia, is a Member of the World Academy of Art and Science whether he has ever been nominated for Membership and turned down, or whether he is under consideration now?
He is a leading chemist, recipient of the Nobel Prize, and a friend of mine for 35 years. If he has not been nominated, I hereby nominate him.
May I also ask the same questions about Academician N. I. Semenov, of Moscow? He, too, is a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. I have known him for several years, and I have a high opinion of him, as one of the leading physical chemists of the world and also as a man of great ability and integrity. I hereby nominate him, also, for Membership in the World Academy of Art and Science.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Mama and Daddy:
We are very pleased that you liked the shirt....obviously Lucy was responsible for the craftsmanship, but I bear full responsibility
for the choice of the material. I remember your penchant for aloha shirts. It is wash and wear, incidentally.
After a good deal of procrastinating on the part of the staff of out department I finally had my general examinations a month ago.
Although they might have gone better, I am now officially a candidate for the Ph.D. degree. I received a letter from the Dean of the
Graduate School today informing of this new situation. I expect to finish up either at the end of the summer or by the New Year.
Unfortunately research never progresses at the rate I would like. I keep making up weekly schedules, and have yet to keep to one, for
one reason or another. I am now in a big push to get an abstract submitted for the Genetics Society meetings, which are to be held at
Amherst, Massachusetts, in August.
We received a note from Linus, mirabile dictu. Poor fellow, seems to have stumbled into a trying period of life. Thank god his accident
wasn't more serious. He can always buy another Super 90, but.... I think that we ought to try to get together this summer, especially
so if Peter does indeed come over. I will be pretty busy, but ought to be able to take a week off.
Today we had a very pleasant warm, spring day. Although we have had a very mild winter, today was the first really warm day. We diddled
a bit in the yard. Some weeks ago, the weekend after my orals, we cut down the laurel hedge at the street side of the garden,
achieving a real sense of space in the yard. Although it opens it up to the street, the improvement is immense. Lucy is putting in her
vegetable garden new, and also is making a little dry stream bed through the bamboo at the east side of the house. She seems to derive
a real satisfaction from her labors in the garden, to say nothing of the gustatory delight we all get from the fresh vegetables.
[...] Too bad, but somehow I can understand. He has always struck me as a pretty unfeeling
fellow, and it may be difficult for him to express emotion to a woman. Also, he liked to work at night, all night. He hasn't published
anything since he went to Harvard, except for one paper, the experiments for which he did at CIT. Strange, the Harvard effect.
Linus writes that you have had an offer of $3000.00 for the Merc. I think that that is the minimum acceptable figure, although Lucy and
I have had our eye on the old crate ourselves. I guess that I ought to learn to be realistic, though. Linus indicates that he may be
interested in getting it back himself, I guess for Linie. I have trouble reading his handwriting, and didn't fully understand what he
was saying. It seems to me to be not a particularly appropriate vehicle for a teen-aged kid.
Much love from
Crellin

Mr. Richard A. Jacobowitz
1056 Boynton Avenue
Bronx 72, New York
Dear Mr. Jacobowitz:
I am sorry to have been slow to answer your letter of 2 February.
I have thought about the question that you ask, as to whether it is possible to tag genes with radioactive isotopes and determine the traits that they contain.
I think that it is not likely that this could be done. The genes are molecules of deoxyribonucleic acid. They apparently act by forming other molecules of ribonucleic acid, which have a complementary structure to the gene itself, and which then determine the structure of some protein molecule that is synthesized. I think that the property of instability of the nucleus that is characteristic of radioactivity would not show up in the course of such a process.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Motion of erythrocytes in an inhomogeneous magnetic field
Dr. Gustav Albrecht has calculated the force on an erythrocyte due to an inhomogeneous magnetic field with field strength 10,000 oersted and gradient 10,000 oersted per cm. He finds that the cells would move through an aqueous solution at the rate of 0.1 mm per hour. Hence it is not feasible to attempt to fractionate cells by this method.

Professor David P. Shoemaker
Department of Chemistry

Dear Dave:
I have been reading a book in which Dr. L. Ron Hubbard says that he and Coast Guard Lt. Commander Johnny Arwine came to the California Institute of Technology at the end of World War II, got the atomic physicists together in a meeting with Hubbard in the chair and Arwine as the speaker. The statements in this hook are so surprising that I have decided to check up on them.
I remember a meeting at which the Pasadena Federation of Atomic Scientists was set up — the meeting was held in the Gates lecture room. I believe that you were an officer of the Pasadena Federation.
Could you write me, telling me what you remember about this meeting and about the Pasadena Federation, and also telling me whether you know Dr. L. Ron Hubbard or John Arwine, or anything about the meeting that he refers to in the book (Dr. Hubbard)?
While you are at it, would you check the Registrar's Office at MIT to see whether either L. Ron Hubbard or John Arwine ever was a student there?
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Henry:
I thank you for sending me the copy of your letter to Mrs. Guggenheim containing your resignation as President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
I congratulate you on your successful career with the Foundation, beginning at the beginning and extending over the intervening period of 39 years, during which you contributed to the formulation of the principles and were most effective in putting them into operation. Also, I want again to thank you for your kindness to me, and to my wife, when, 37 years ago, you gave us valuable advice as we passed through New York on the way to Munich, Copenhagen, and Zurich, where, as a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, I had the opportunity to add to my store of my knowledge and understanding by associating with leading European scientists, as well as other American scientists who were working in Europe.
I am sure that you will find continued happiness in the activities that you mention in your letter to Mrs. Guggenheim, and I wish you further success.

Dear Mr. Brumer:
I was interested to read your letter. I think that the discussion in my book of the nature of the bonds in molecular oxygen in its normal state probably suffices to answer the first part of your letter.
As to the structure that you describe, it is seen to be either a singlet sigma structure or a singlet delta structure. The first excited state of the oxygen molecule is singlet delta, and the second excited state is singlet sigma. Your structure is, I think, to be assigned to these two excited states, each of which can be described in an approximate way as involving a double bond.
Sincerely yours,

Mr. V. Hanly
500 Palo Alto Avenue
Palo Alto, California
Dear Mr. Hanly:
I have been interested to read your letter.
First, let me say that it is well known that some mental diseases are produced by a single imitated gene, present in double dose.
I have suggested that schizophrenia is not a single disease, but is rather a complex of diseases, which we are not yet capable of subjecting to differential diagnosis. I have suggested that several genes may be involved in this complex of diseases. I think, in fact, that some of these genes may be important to mental function, and that it is a special combination of alleles that leads to schizophrenia, in some cases.
Unfortunately it is difficult to make progress in this field. The chemistry of the brain has not been well worked out as yet, and experimental studies are made difficult by difficulty in studying the biochemistry of those portions of the human body that are significant to mental function.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Linus:
The name of L. Ron Hubbard means nothing to me except "Dianetics" and pseudoscience. The name of John Arwine means nothing at all to me.
To the best of my knowledge I never met either of them. I certainly do not recall any meeting associated with them, such as Hubbard describes. As far as I can remember Dick Noyes or I presided over all meetings of the Pasadena chapter of the FAS.
I cannot rigorously exclude the possibility that either or both of them participated in one of our meetings. I could easily have forgotten the names. It is even possible that in the chaos of the time such a meeting as Hubbard describes actually took place independently of our association, without our being aware of it. In this case, Hubbard probably has exaggerated its importance and impact.
I remember that the "Association of Pasadena Scientists" (which later joined FAS) had an organization meeting (about which I remember essentially nothing), and had regular public meetings for a while, in Gates Lecture Room. At one or two of them we had movies of bomb shots. At others, talks by people like Robert Oppenheimer. We had steering committee meetings at frequent intervals, had a speakers program, etc. Dick Noyes was Chairman, I was a moderator or something. We started activities in the late fall of 1945 and petered out in the summer of 1946.
When I left Cal Tech I believe James Bonner inherited the files. You might ask him for his memories, if you haven't already done so. (The Newsletters in the files might yield a clue.) You might also ask Dick Noyes.
The M.I. T. Registrar has no record of either Hubbard or Arwine having been registered as a student here.
I am sorry I can't be more helpful. But you have got me curious. I'd like to know if you turn up anything interesting. It sounds to me as if Hubbard is merely puffing.
Sincerely yours,
David P. Shoemaker

24 April 1963
Mr. Charles Newton
California Institute of Technology
Dear Chuck:
I call your attention to a matter that the California Institute of Technology might want to take some action about.
I send you herewith a book entitled All About Radiation, published, I think, in 1957, and written by a man named L. Ron Hubbard, and another man. (I should like to have this book returned.) Also I send copies of my correspondence with Dr. David P. Shoemaker and Dr. Reuben Wood.
The reference to the California Institute of Technology begins on page U8. L. Ron Hubbard says there that at the end of World War II he and Johnny Arwine came to the California Institute of Technology, got the atomic physicists together, with Hubbard in the chair, and Arwine giving an address. He then states, referring to the atomic physicists of the California Institute of Technology, "These men said one thing: 'We wish to overthrow the government of the United States by force'.”
He then mentions a movement led by the late Albert Einstein. This seems to be a reference to the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, Incorporated, which had Albert Einstein as Chairman. I was a member of it, as you can see from the 1945 bulletin that is enclosed. Professor Harrison Brown later became a member.
I do not know either Hubbard or Arwine. I thought that it was barely possible that they had had some connection with the Pasadena Federation of Atomic Scientists, and for this reason I wrote to Dr. Shoemaker. I wrote to Dr. Wood to find out especially about Hubbard's connection with George Washington University. Hubbard calls himself Dr. L. Ron Hubbard. I do not know where he got his doctor's degree.
I remember the meeting at which the Pasadena Federation of Atomic Scientists was organized. I think that both Oppenheimer and I spoke at this meeting.
Perhaps you would think it worth while to ask people in the Physics Department if they know anything about the alleged meeting at the California Institute of Technology, a meeting of atomic physicists with Hubbard in the chair and Arwine addressing them.

Mr. John Fischer, Editor
Harper's Magazine 14-9
East 35rd Street New York
16, New York
Dear Mr. Fischer:
Your letter of 17 April is silent about my January letter, which I asked to be published in Harper's Magazine without delay. I assume that it is to appear in the May issue. Your letter informs me that three letters from Bertrand Russell will be published in the June issue.
The first sentence in your letter is a statement about "something in the daily press about death rays and cancer cures". I judge that you are asking me to comment on your statement. Articles about scientific matters that appear in the daily press and in magazines are often so poorly written as to be valueless. Work is being carried out by scientists in the field of cancer research and the field of the lethal effects of radiation. This work may well be described as part of the scientific spectrum—a part that you may be ignorant about.
Yours truly,

Dear Kees:
I was interested to read your review of Umbreit'e Modern Microbiology, in Science for January, part because I bad found some errors in the first edition of Oginsky and Umbreit and in part because of say connection with W. H. Freeman and Company, which published the book.
Only recently have I had a chance to examine the book. I found some grammatical errors and other errors, such as you mention in your review, but not nearly so may as I had expected to find after having read your review, which was perhaps more strongly critical than was deserved by the book.
I am writing now because I learned just a few days ago from Mr. Stanley Schaefer, the President of W. H. Freeman and Company, that you had not answered his letter of 17 December 1962. You probably misplaced the letter when it reached you, just before the Christmas holidays.
In the letter Mr. Schaefer asked if you would give permission to show the review to the author, before its publication in Science. This question is no longer significant, because the review has been published. He then said "And incidentally, you mentioned that about one-third of the pages in your copy of the book bear critical remarks. Would you let us have this copy for further documentation to the author? We would, of course, return it after it had served its purpose, and we would also send you a fresh copy immediately."
Earlier in the letter Mr. Schaefer had said that the W. H. Freeman and Company could ask the author to rewrite the book at once so as to pass the most critical examination.
I am sure that your remarks, which number about 200, I judge from the statement in your review, would be useful to the author.
Mr. Schaefer has felt hesitant about writing to you a second time. I have accordingly decided to write to you, to rewind you about the request in his letter of 17 December, and to suggest that you lend your annotated book to him.
Please give our best regards to Mimi.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling:lh

The Editor
The Minority of One
Dear Sir:
The article by my wife and me on the Oxford Conference of Peace Groups constitutes the answer to most of Dr. Jack's letter.
Dr. Jack denies having made the statement that we quoted about the Presidents of the European Federation. There were 15 people present when he made this statement, and I have no doubt that they remember the statement and the indignation with which I reacted to it. I was so surprised by the statement that I immediately wrote it down.
It is not true that my wife and I at the September 1961 meeting in London resisted the formation of a second international peace organization. However, we opposed some of the restrictive criteria for membership that were advocated by Dr. Jack.
