Pierson RE: Thanks Pierson for her poem along with the poem by Rewi Alley as they were both very excellent.  Says that both she and LP have returned home from a speaking tour for the Friends Peace Education Committee.  Also notes that she is somewhat depressed about the peace movement in the U.S. as the professional peace people have become quite counterproductive in their attempts.   Dear Mr. Hanly:

  I have been interested to read your letter.

  First, let me say that it is well known that some mental diseases are produced by a single imitated gene, present in double dose.

  I have suggested that schizophrenia is not a single disease, but is rather a complex of diseases, which we are not yet capable of subjecting to differential diagnosis. I have suggested that several genes may be involved in this complex of diseases. I think, in fact, that some of these genes may be important to mental function, and that it is a special combination of alleles that leads to schizophrenia, in some cases.

  Unfortunately it is difficult to make progress in this field. The chemistry of the brain has not been well worked out as yet, and experimental studies are made difficult by difficulty in studying the biochemistry of those portions of the human body that are significant to mental function.

• Letter from Reuben Wood, Department of Chemistry, George Washington University to LP RE:  Wood does not know anything of a meeting on nuclear weapons at Cal Tech which LP refers to.  Wood has checked with the Registrar’s office and found that L. Ron Hubbard was registered in the Engineering School at GW during 1930-1932 but never received a degree.  Wood has not found anyone who remembers him personally.
