Ozone
Could you tell me the spectral regions in which, ozone has a strong absorption? Does it absorb in the red and infrared as well as in the ultraviolet? I have calculated that a photon with wavelength 11,800 Å has enough energy to dissociate the molecule into an oxygen molecule and an oxygen atom. Have I made a mistake? Why is ozone transparent through much of the visible region? Why does it absorb strongly in the region from 3200 Å down?
I shall be grateful to you for this information.

14 January 1963
Dear Peter,
Mama and I were happy to see you and the children. I do not know when we shall get to London again - we have no plans for coming.
I enclose a check for 5 pounds to cover the cost of the cab and other expenses. I had planned to repay you when you came to see us before our departure.
Both Mama and I on our arrival in Pasadena were feverish — about one degree of fever. We are both still in bed, but expect to be able to get about in another day. I am dictating this letter to you on my Dictaphone at home.
We have been having rather cold weather, getting down to freezing at night.
Love from

Dear Walter:
I was happy to receive your letter. First, it gives me an opportunity to tell you how highly I value your book on physical chemistry. I feel that you have to be classed in the top group of writers of textbooks in the whole country. I find that I take pleasure, despite my rather considerable knowledge of the subject matter, in reading your book.
I am also pleased that you are planning to shift into the field of molecular mechanisms of memory and instinct. This is a difficult field. I have had trouble during the past two or three years in thinking of worthwhile experiments to carry out in connection with my molecular theory of general anesthesia. I may say that I am rather doubtful that nucleic acid is involved in memory — it is, of course, involved in instinct.
I think that you should spend some time checking up on what other people are doing. In particular, a visit to the Brain Research Institute at UCLA would be well worth while. If you do visit UCLA, you ought to spend a day or two with us.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear John:
I look forward to learning more about the progress of the International Peace Movement. In particular, I am eager to have the answer to the question that I asked at Oxford and again in London—the question about the criteria for membership in the International Confederation for Disarmament and Peace.
You may remember that at Oxford it was decided that the delegates would be sent the names and addresses of all delegates. Could you have a copy of this list sent to me by airmail?
Also, as soon as the report is prepared by the Continuing Committee, I should like to have a copy of it. I may say that I trust that it will not be issued as a report of the Oxford Conference, because in fact the final report or statement was never submitted to the Conference for approval, rejection, or revision. Even on the Tuesday after the Conference Mr. Lee mentioned that it was being edited. Such a statement cannot, of course, be put out as the statement or report of the Oxford Conference - I, for one, am not willing to have my name attached to a document that I have not seen, in its final form.
I look forward to learning the decision that you and Dr. Kloppenburg make about membership on the Continuing Committee.
Both my wife and I are ill. We found the trip to Europe rather too strenuous for us. We hope, however, to be better soon.
We send our best wishes to you in your efforts for peace.
Cordially,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Jack:
I'd like to think some more about the matter raised in your note of January 7. For one thing, there is the matter of partial ionic character of the bonds, which is no doubt greater in ammonium ions than in ammonia. However, I feel that it would be wise to be cautious about reaching conclusion on the basis of the nuclear spin-spin couplings. I think that there is no justification for changing from the whole idea of essentially p bonds on ammonia, water, etc.

I am writing to acknowledge your letter of 9 January.
I have decided not to make a contribution to the London Committee of 100, until, at any rate, I have more information about how effectively the organization will function. 22 January 1963
Canon L. John Collins
2 Amen Court
London, E.C.4, ENGLAND
Dear John:
I have decided to ask you to give me some information about the arrangements for the Oxford meeting, held at Somerville College, 4 to 7 January 1963.
You remember that my wife and I were delegates at this International Conference. We had been invited by you and Mr. Buchbinder, two of the three presidents of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms
The letters of invitation and other documents about this international conference are on letterheads of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms, with you, Mr. Buchbinder, and Dr. Heinz Kloppenburg listed as the three presidents of the organization.
In Somerville College, at 6:00 P.M. on 4 January 1963, in the presence of a number of delegates, I spoke with Dr. Homer Jack about his efforts to get the presidents of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms to withdraw the invitation that they had issued to some observers, selected by the World Peace Council, to attend the conference. I mentioned my opinion that Dr. Jack and other delegates, who were attending the international conference at the invitation of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms, were not in a position to object to other invitations that had been extended by their hosts.
Dr. Jack then said “You don’t understand. We are responsible for this meeting. The European Federation Against Nuclear Arms’ officers are just our office boys, who do the work, and if they make a mistake we can force them to correct it.”
I then said “I am afraid that I have been brought here under false pretenses. I was invited by the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms, and now you tell me that it is only a cover group for you.”
Dr. Jack then said “You are misinterpreting what I said.”
At that time I thought I should leave the conference, if there had been misrepresentation about it in the invitation to me. However, I decided to remain and to continue to participate in the conference.
I feel, however, that I should know whether or not there was any basis for the statement made by Dr. Jack. I am accordingly writing to ask you to answer some questions about the conference, if you feel that it is proper for you to do so.
Was the Oxford conference held under the auspices of the European Federation Against Nuclear Arms?
Were the officers of the European Federation responsible for arranging the conference?
Was any other organization closely involved in arranging the conference? In particular, was the organization that was represented at the conference by Dr. Jack closely involved in arranging the conference?
Was any large contribution of money for support of the conference made by any organization other than the European Federation?
I shall be grateful to you for information on these points.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Mrs. Daniel:
I was happy to receive your letter. I hope that you are not too greatly disappointed with my answer.
First, I must tell you that I am not a Friend. My paternal grandparents were Lutherans. I believe that I was baptized in the Congregational Church—I attended various Sunday schools when X was a boy, but I broke away from church affiliation when I began to think for myself and to become skeptical about dogmatic statements.
I do not believe in God. You will find a statement of my beliefs in my article Humanism and Peace, which I enclose.
I am a Humanist—a member of the American Humanist Association. Also, last summer I joined the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles. You no doubt know that the Unitarian Church and the Universalist Church of the United States are not Christian churches. The First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles accepts atheists as members. I feel that the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles is doing an especially good job in supporting principles of morality and ethics, and I joined the church in order to help with this work.
With best wishes to you and your husband, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Mr. John Fischer, Editor-in-Chief
Harper's Magazine
Dear Mr. Fischer:
I was shocked to see the statements that you made about m in your article in the January issue of Harper's Magazine. These statements and the implications that would be drawn from them by an uninformed reader are false, and there is no doubt that they will do damage to my reputation.
I have accordingly prepared a Letter to the Editor, which is enclosed, and I ask that it be published in full in a forthcoming issue of Harper's Magazine.
Moreover, I may mention that I think that your statement about Lord Russell is untrue. You say that "Now he is equally hot for unilateral disarmament of the West." I have been in close touch with Lord Russell during recent years. He has advocated nuclear disarmament of Great Britain ("Our immediate purpose, insofar as it is political, is only to persuade Britain to abandon reliance upon the illusory protection of nuclear weapons.") However, I think that you are wrong in saying that he has advocated unilateral disablement of the West.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Mr. Pincus:
I have received a lector from Mr. Lewis C. Green, Boatmen's Bank Building, St. Louis 2 (he is an attorney with whom I am associated in a legal case), in which he asks for details about something that I had mentioned to him—the possibility of controlling the sex of human infants by electrophoretic separation of sperm, with one or the other fraction then used for artificial insemination.
He has asked what progress has been made in this field and whether this kind of control of sex is now a practical possibility for humane.
I am turning to you for an answer to his question. Would you write to me, or, perhaps even better, directly to him?
With thanks for your assistance, I am

28 January
Dear Peter:
Many thanks for your kind hospitality while we were in London. I still feel that you went too far in giving up your bed for us. We enjoyed our little visit to Europe very much, although it was pretty hurried. It was pretty funny; we had hardly walked into our house when the whole affair took on an aura of unreality. We are looking forward to having an opportunity to spend a year somewhere, and see more. Our flight home was uneventful and dull, marked only by the beer supply running out, and by water condensing somewhere in the air conditioning as we were approaching San Francisco, so it started dripping all over us. Both the children and the baby-sitters had survived well; I think the worst that had happened was that Cheryl developed a loose tooth. Ah, she's growing up. [...]
I still don't know any more about next year, although things are going well. The Maryland thing didn't develop, in as much as they don't want to develop bacterial genetics at this time. I don't know why they were so interested in me, since it was clear from the beginning what my research interests are.
Grant's Standfast is pretty good; almost good enough to make me a Scotch drinker. Alas, my supply of $2.50 a bottle whiskey is almost gone, and soon I will be limited to beer again. I decided as a result of our visit with you that the myths about English beer are just that, myths. I suppose I ought to reserve ultimate judgment until I have an opportunity to sample the product ton the summer, when a cold beer is so refreshing.
My work is still going well. I can't believe it. The past six months have been the most productive in my career, in terms of results per unit experiment. I am feeling pretty good, actually. I have lots of ideas, and plenty of things to do after I get out. I'm kind of anxious to get out, although I'm not particularly anxious to leave Seattle. It will be nice to have a little more income, though.
Do you want be to do something positive about selling the Merc? I think that it might not hurt to register with the USA Mercedes owners club, who put out calls for such registration. I will do so if you so desire.
By the way, thank you very much for all the Christmas presents. I don't know if Lucy and/or the children have written, but I suppose that they will eventually.
Crellin

The Nobel Committee for Chemistry
Stockholm 50, SWEDEN
Gentlemen:
I was pleased that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1962 was awarded to Kendrew and Perutz for their work on myoglobin and hemoglobin. I had nominated Professor Robert B. Corey, and had thought that it might be justified to include him in the award. I, of course, recognize that there were also good arguments against including him, and I do not disagree with your decision for 1962.
It seems to me that the award of another Nobel Prize in this field, the x-ray investigation of the structure of proteins, could not be justified, and I am accordingly not renewing my nomination of Professor Corey.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

The Nobel Committee for
Chemistry Stockholm 50, SWEDEN
Gentlemen:
I am writing to support the proposal that Professor Dorothy Hodgkin be awarded the
Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1963. I assume that she has been nominated.
It is my opinion that her work on the determination of the structure of penicillin
and the determination of the structure of vitamin B12, by the x-ray diffraction
method, represents a really outstanding contribution to science. In each case she
found it necessary, in order to achieve her goal, to develop the techniques of x-ray
crystallography significantly beyond their accepted limits at the time when her work
was carried out. Each of the two substances that she subjected to investigation in
this way is of great importance, and her work in determining the two structures
shows the greatest virtuosity. I believe that she is to be considered the
outstanding x-ray crystallographer of the world.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Mr. Sawyer:
I have received a carbon copy of a letter presumably written by Fred Devine, and addressed to the United States District Court, Federal Middle District, York, Pennsylvania. It is indicated that a copy was sent to you, to the President of the United States, the Gazette and Daily, and others—the letter was, I judge, disseminated widely enough to constitute publication.
Do you know who Fred Devine is? Do you think that the statements in the letter are libelous?
I look forward to hearing from you about the progress of the libel suit against the Anti-Communist League and its officers.
Sincerely yours,

Robinson, Arthur B.
Last spring I decided to have four young undergraduate students of chemistry, two from the University of London and two from our Institute, carry on research on the action of chemical substances as anesthetic agents in relation to their physicochemical properties, under the supervision of a Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. William Dove. Dr. Dove and I decided that the detailed supervision of the work should he in the hands of an older undergraduate with superior ability, and after investigation of members of our junior class in chemistry we selected Arthur Robinson. He is an outstandingly able man in experimental chemistry, and his work during the summer was of the highest quality. He is going to supervise another group of students doing research on anesthesia during the earning summer, under my direction.
It is my opinion that in ability he is to be placed in the upper 10 percent of our students. His academic record is not so good—it is average, for our selected group of undergraduate students. Some of his grades are low, but this reflects a temporary lack of Interest or distraction by non-academic activities, and not lack of ability,
I believe that Robinson would be a thorough success as a graduate student in chemistry, and I recommend that you give serious consideration to him for appointment as a graduate assistant or fellow.
Robinson's personal qualities and character are excellent.

Dear Henry:
Here are my reports.

31 January 1963
Dear Linus
I have been intending to write to you, to tell you that Mama has been rather sick. We were in England from 4 to 11 January, and she began to get a cold about 6 January. She had a slight fever for a couple of days, but seemed well enough to make the flight home on 11 January. However, the next day she had a fever, which continued to increase, day after day, until for a couple of days it was 102.3°. She was also suffering from deafness and from conjunctivitis. I called the doctor, despite her objection — by this time she was sick enough not to be able to object very well — and he came (Dr. Maronde, the partner of Bob Boyd, who was not available that day). He gave her a prescription for Panalba, a mixture of tetracyclene and another antibiotic, which she took for three days, one capsule every six hours. Within a day her temperature had dropped about three degrees, and her conjunctivitis rapidly disappeared. She has continued to improve, although she is still rather weak. This morning, for the first time, she came up to the kitchen to eat her breakfast. Twice she has come to the kitchen for her dinner. Otherwise she has eaten her meals in bed. I have been the cook and dishwasher. I have stayed with her most of the time. Fortunately I do not have much in the way of duties at the lab, although I had three lectures to give shortly after our return. I have been working at home, doing the last jobs in connection with the third edition of College Chemistry.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday I am giving some lectures in Modesto. I have decided to fly to Modesto Tuesday morning and to fly back Wednesday afternoon. Probably Mama and I shall stay in Pasadena until the end of the week, and I hope that we can go to the ranch about 10 or 11 February and stay for ten days or two weeks. It would be fine if you could come and see us at some time, perhaps coming up to the ranch, too.
I had a cold before we went to England, and I have spent several days in bed during the past month, but I have not been in bad shape.
Right at the moment Linda is in bed, and her three boys are not very well. Barclay, too, is rather under the weather, and is staying at home a good bit of the time. This seems to be a bad year for colds.
Much love from
