2 February 1962
Dear Friend,
I enclose with this letter a copy of the February 1962 issue of The Minority of One. I do not know whether or not you have ever seen this publication. I was reminded to send it to you because of the appearance, on page 8, of a letter from Albert Schweitzer, in which I am sure you will be interested. There is also a page about me, a tribute on my 61st birthday. You will note on the inside back cover that my wife and I have been interested in helping Dr. M. S. Arnoni, the Editor, in getting out his little magazine. We do not agree with everything that he publishes; in particular, I do not have the same feeling about the treatment of cancer as is expressed in the article beginning on page 12.
Nevertheless, we think that Dr. Arnoni is doing a very good job in publishing opinions that are not popular in the United States. You will be interested to see on page 18 a statement about the difficulties that Dr. Arnoni had with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. My wife is especially pleased that the American Civil Liberties Union, of which she is a Director, was successful in helping him to resist the attack on his rights.
My wife and I have just returned to the United States after a three-weeks visit to Chile. We both participated in a symposium on the image of Latin America, arranged by the University of Concepcion. We feel that the trip to Chile was well worth while. We had to come back on 21 January because I had to give the introductory address in an Inter-American Symposium on Congenital Defects of Infants, in Los Angeles. This medical meeting was quite good.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

8 February 1962
Dear Hans,
When the Saturday Evening Post appeared ten days ago, with the first of the three articles by Edward Teller, I thought that I should prepare some complementary articles. I waited until the second article appeared, day before yesterday, and then sent Robert Fuoss, the Editor, the following telegram:
"Would you seriously examine three manuscripts by me totalling fifteen thousand words? These three articles would complement the three by Edward Teller. The articles would be interesting, informative, and reliable. They would contain additional facts and would express opinions held by many scientists. The publication of these articles complementing those of Dr. Teller would be a service to the American people, in the spirit of the new Post. It would make the whole of this important matter, rather than only half of it, available to your readers. I ask only that you agree to examine the articles in order to determine their suitability for publication. If you reply without delay I shall drop other activities, write the articles, and submit them to you about 28 February. /s/ Linus Pauling"
Today I received the following answer:
"Sorry we have already agreed to consider similar rebuttal from Hans Bethe. Robert Fuoss Saturday Evening Post"
I am pleased with this situation, because I believe that the rebuttal by you would probably be more effective than one by me, and I am writing to express my pleasure to you, and my appreciation of your continued efforts.
It has occurred to me that your series of articles complementing those of Teller might be weak with respect to the question about radioactive fallout and how it affects life on earth. This is the subject of Teller's second article, which begins with the sentences "Fallout from nuclear testing is not worth worrying about. Its effect on human beings, if there is an effect, is insignificant."
I remember that in 1957, in a letter to me about the appeal by American scientists for an international agreement to stop the testing of nuclear weapons, you said that you did not have enough personal knowledge about the biological effects of high-energy radiation to subscribe to a public statement that included mention of this matter.
As you know, I have considerable knowledge in the fields of physics and chemistry and also in the fields of biology and medicine. Thirteen years ago, with my students, I made a significant contribution to human genetics and medicine and for many years I have been working on the molecular basis of disease. In its issue of 2 February 1962 Time Magazine, in a two-column article entitled "Inheriting Bad Health," included the following paragraph:
"So little was once known of the molecular structure of genes that the defects they cause could not be identified or treated. Now, in the baby science of 'molecular medicine,' chiefly conceived by Chemist Linus Pauling, both problems are beginning to be solved. Last week in Los Angeles, at a conference co-sponsored by the National Foundation and the University of Southern California, Dr. Pauling and others told of their progress."
I have decided to prepare some comments on the second Teller article, and to send them to you, in order that you may know what my feelings are about this article. The comments are brief and succinct. These comments are not to be considered a draft of the five thousand-word rebuttal to this article that I had hoped to write.
These comments are enclosed with this letter. I hope that you will find them useful. I am not suggesting that you should quote me about this matter, but I hope that you can make use of what I have written, in some way. You are free to do so, without referring to me.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

9 February 1962
Dear Peter,
I am planning to come to London this week. I shall be aboard Qantas flight 510, leaving San Francisco at 12:01 A.M. Thursday 15 February and arriving at London at 9:20 Thursday 15 February. I plan to return on Pan American 121, leaving London at 3:30 P.M. Saturday 17 February, although I may have to postpone my return for one day.
I think that Ralph Schoenman or someone else either connected or formerly connected with the Committee of 100 is planning to meet me and to take me to a hotel on Thursday night. The Earl Russell, Kensington 6888, may know something about the plans, in case you can't get in touch with Schoenman. His phone number is Hampsted 2351 (Schoenman's).
I may have told you that the National Academy of Sciences has changed its regulations, and that manuscripts received after 1 March will not be accepted for publication if they would make more than eight printed pages. I think that the antiferromagnetism paper would be more than eight printed pages, with the figures. Also, because of the rapid publication, I think that it would be good for us to get the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. We can do so only if I settle down to the job of finishing it immediately after returning from London, and this would require that you turn over your material to me, including drafts of figures, if you have made any. I can have them inked here.
I feel that it would be wise for us to get this paper published without further delay, and accordingly that it would be wise for us to go ahead along these lines.
Mama is in Philadelphia, attending a meeting of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She will be home on Sunday. Barclay and Linda and the boys are going to move out in a couple of weeks. They have been staying with us, because of uncertainty as to whether or not Barclay would accept a professorship at Chicago, which had been offered to him, and then a professorship at Yale. He turned them down, and they have bought a house in Altadena. I think that it is above Foothill, but I haven't seen it and am not sure about its location.
Much love from,
[Linus Pauling]
P.S. I have just seen in U. S. News and World Report for 12 February the text of the acceptance speech by Senator Barry Goldwater, after he had been nominated for President at a mock national convention in the Alfalfa Club in Washington. The speech contains the following paragraphs, among others: "For Secretary of Defense, I am sure you will agree I couldn't do better than Linus Pauling. I figure if we give him three weeks on the job he'll give us a defense without going to the expense of nuclear weapons or bomb shelters, or anything else. That would save us about sixty billion dollars right there and it aint to be sneezed at.
"Also I rather like his notion of replacing General Walker with Cyrus Eaton. If we're going to indoctrinate the troops, let's do it right."

Chemistry of Mental Disease
Address by Linus Pauling. [Rough Draft]
University of California School of Medicine, 8:00 P.M. Tuesday 13 February 1962
There are many kinds of mental disease, and many chemical aspects of mental disease. The human body, including the brain, which is the organ of thinking and memory, is composed of molecules. Vectors of disease are molecules or are composed of molecules. The genes seem to be molecules of deoxyribonucleic acid. The impact of the environment on a human being is by way of molecules of chemical substances or radiant energy. Chemicals, called drugs, are used for the treatment and control of mental disease.
I shall not discuss the entire subject, chemistry and mental disease, for several reasons. First, I do not have time to do justice to the whole subject. Second, I do not know enough about the nature of the intermolecular interactions between the many valuable drugs, such as chlorpromazine, now being used in the treatment and control of mental disease to present a sound and reasonable discussion of the mechanism of their action; I'm not sure that anybody knows enough. I shall accordingly not devote any time to this subject.
Some of the many types of mental disorder result from birth injury or environmental causes of a macroscopic character, which cannot be described as chemical.
Temporary or permanent impairment of brain function may also result from ingestion of substances not normally present or normally present only in small amounts in the body. Among such substances are athanol, compounds of heavy metals (mercury, lead - "mad as a hatter"), and organic substances found in plants, such as LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) and mescaline.
Chromosomal abnormalities, such as those resulting from nondisjunction, are a common cause of mental deficiency and may possibly be involved in some cases of mental illness. Examples are Mongolism (extra chromosome number 22, or other chromosomal abnormality), Turner's disease (.10), Klinefelter's disease (XXY, XXXY, XXXXY). The incidence of Mongolism is about one in 600 births, that of Turner's disease about one in 900, and that of Klinefelter's disease about one in 400.
The abnormalities with little doubt result from the manufacture of enzymes in abnormal amount. It is usually considered that two genes of the same type manufacture twice as many molecules of the corresponding enzyme as one gene. There may be exceptions, however. There is some evidence that the enzymes manufactured by the genes of the X chromosome are not present in twice the amount in women as in men, and some evidence that one X chromosome in the cell remains extended, with its genes presumably active, whereas the other one (or more than one) rolls up, in such a way as to cut down on the gene activity. This rolled-up chromosome is presumably responsible for the Barr test.
Probably the major cause of both mental deficiency and mental illness is gene mutation. It is usually estimated that about half of congenital defects in infants are of genetic origin.
An abnormal gene may fail to manufacture the molecules of enzyme for which the allelomorphic normal gene is responsible, or may manufacture abnormal molecules that are deficient in enzyme activity.
The most thoroughly investigated case of this sort is phenylketonuria. The enzyme involved, located in the liver, catalyses the oxidation of phenylalanine to tyrosine. Phenylketonuria was discovered by Følling in Norway in 1951. It is transmitted by an autosomal recessive gene. The incidence in Europe and United States is one in 80 for carriers. About one percent of institutionalized defectives are phenylketonurics. Their mental defect is severe, with 60 percent of the patients having IQ less than 40. Neurological disturbances include an abnormal encephalogram, often with epileptiform seizures, hyper activity, poor attention span, and normal behavior.
There are few mental diseases that are as well understood as phenylketonuria. The cause of most mental disorders is unknown, and many are not well-defined, even from the clinical standpoint. It is probable that the mental deterioration that occurs in later life in patients vith Huntington's Chorea is the result of a change in brain chemistry, the nature of which is not known at present. The deposition of copper in patients with Wilson's disease is without doubt responsible for the mental as well as physical manifestations of the disease. A change in brain chemistry may well be responsible also for schizophrenia and other forms of mental illness.
Despite the present lack of knowledge, the possibility that many mental disease may have a molecular cause provides a powerful stimulus for research. Recognition of a biochemical abnormality in a disease leads to a study of the molecular mechanism, a search for methods of treatment, and the hope that a cure will eventually be discovered.
In the California Institute of Technology work on the molecular basis of mental disease has been carried on for five years, at first with Dr. Richard Lippman as the principal investigator, and more recently by Dr. Kenneth N. F. Shaw, Dr. Tom Perry, and their collaborators. Associated with this work has been a study of mental deficiency in Hawaii, carried out largely by Dr. Elvira Goettseh. This work has now been transferred to the University of Hawaii, with the President, Laurence Snyder, as the responsible investigator.
The work in the California Institute of Technology has been quite varied in nature. As an example of what has been and is being done, I may mention briefly the studies by Dr. Shaw and his collaborators on Hartnup disease.
This disease was first described by Dent and his coworkers in England in 1956. Four our of eight children are afflicted, in the original Hartnup family. Fifteen cases in nine families have now been found, in England, Holland, and Germany. The parents in three families are blood relations.
The manifestations of the disease include a red scaly skin rash, sensitivity of the skin to sunlight, intermittent cerebellar ataxia that involves a lurching walk, jerky arm movement, and intension tremor. The mental state ranges from normal to retarded and may include milk emotional instability, psychosis, delirium, dillusions, and hallucinations. These features are variable and episodic, and can be precipitated by infection or psychological stress.
A constant biochemical finding is a large excretion of certain amino acids.
Dr. Shaw obtained several Hartnup urine specimens from Dent's laboratory two years ago. Many amino acids are excreted in amounts ten times greater than normal, but others are not affected. The amino aciduria Is caused by defective reabsorption in the renal tubule.
Professor Dent had reported an abnormal metabolism of indole compounds, but Dr. Shaw found no such abnormality.
He was then successful in resolving this contradiction, by collaborative work with Professor Dent, in which a boy in the Hartnup family and a normal individual were given two grams of L-tryptophan by mouth, at first without and then with the antibiotic neomycin, also given by mouth, to prevent the growth of intestinal microorganisms.
Slide 1. Chromatogram of amino acids in normal urine.
Slide 2. Chromatogram of amino acids in Hartnup urine (only half as much urine used). Note the great amounts of some amino acids.
Slide 3. Urinary indoles after ingestion of tryptophan, both normal and Hartnup. The Hartnup urine contains much larger amounts of several indoles than the normal urine.
Slide 4. The same, except that the antibiotic neomycin was given. Both subjects were also placed on a diet containing no plant materials in order to exclude exogenous indoles. It is seen that the excretion of indole compounds by the Hartnup patient was essentially normal.

Talk with Richard Thruelsen, Senior Editor, Saturday Evening Post, 20 Feb. 1962
At 10:15 today I telephoned Mr. Thruelsen, from whom I had received a letter 16 February, which I saw only this morning on my return from England.
In the letter Mr. Thruelsen mentions that a Cornell group, Morrison, Orear et al. has written a rebuttal to the first Teller article and the Cambridge group, Feld, Holton et al. are preparing one to the third Teller.
When I talked with him he said that the articles were not completely satisfactory, in part because they attacked Teller personally. He also said that the Cambridge article was much too long.
He said that the best that could be hoped for was to have a single article published presenting the other side of the matter. I asked why not three, since three had been published. He said that the Saturday Evening Post couldn't reasonably publish three articles, in part because the matter would be too old and the readers would have forgotten about the Teller articles. I said that the articles should not be considered as tied in so closely with the Teller articles, that instead they would be presenting the subject from a complementary point of view, and would have interest in their own rights. I said that if it was thought that the three articles by Teller were worth publishing, surely the three complementary articles would be worth publishing. He said "You won't get 15,000 words published. If we got 5,000 words published altogether we will be lucky."
We agreed that I would prepare an answer to the second Teller article, trying to keep it down to 1,000 words. I said that I would not want what I had written mixed up with the other material, but rather published under my name, but that it could be part of the longer article. I said that I would restrict myself to matters discussed in the second Teller article.
I said that Teller was trying to get the present government policy changed, and that these complementary articles would be in support of the present government policy.

22 February, 1962
Dear Daddy,
It was good to see you. Next time we shall put you up in comfort, I hope.
I have sent you some clippings and included in the attached envelope an Invoice Envelope for the American Crystallographic Association. Would you please put $7.50 in the envelope and send it to them as my dues? Thank you.
I hope the paper on antiferromagnetism is Ok. The introduction may be a bit longer than suitable to a shorter paper, and the second NaCl structure needs writing and possibly more on the first; MnO is the basic compound. The end needs doing.
If you have lost the ACA invoice envelope I have another.
Love From
Peter

26 February 1962
Dear Peter,
Thanks for your letter and for the clippings. I immediately made use of the clippings, which helped me in writing an article about the trial. I have sent the article to The Nation, which I hope will publish it.
Last night Ralph Schoenman's father, mother, and sister came over to see us. I gave his mother the clipping from The Daily Mail with the nice picture of Ralph and Lord and Lady Russell. If you have time, you might telephone Ralph and say that his father and mother and sister all seem to be in fine health and good spirits.
I have sent a check to the ACA.
Over the weekend I worked on the antiferromagnetism paper. I decided that it was best to begin the discussion with FeF3, which represents about the simplest form of antiferromagnetism. I got the paper about half written on Sunday, and then noticed that I had described the structure incorrectly. Whereas MoF3 has a cubic structure, the structure has collapsed in FeF3. This required only a small amount of rewriting, but then I got tied up in some other work and have decided that it is not possible for me to get the paper off to the Proceedings today, because there are too many things that I must get done before Mama and I take off on our lecture tour for the American Friends Service Committee. I shall have to postpone the job until April.
I enjoyed being with you and Julia and the children.
Love from,
[Linus Pauling]

Subject: Proposed Research
It seems to me that it might be well worth while to carry out some studies of electric conductivity of solutions, in the presence and absence of anesthetic agents.
Let us consider a solution of a protein, with the molecules perhaps positively charged, and with some chloride ions also present in the solution. Most of the electric conductivity of the solution would be due to the chloride ions. A measure of conductivity as a function of temperature, in comparison with the known mobilities of chloride ion, might indicate that at some temperatures there is a decreased conductivity, resulting from entrapment of chloride ions in microcrystals attached also to the protein molecules.
Moreover, a comparison of the conductivity of a solution and of the same solution with added anesthetic agent might provide similar evidence for such entrapment.
I suggest that you do some reading about the measurement of electric conductance, and think about what sort of apparatus could best be used for a study of this sort.
It seems to me that this study of electric conductivity might be the easiest way to get some significant information about the microcrystal theory.

Dear Crellie,
I don't know whether or not I have told you that Mama and I are coming to Seattle on 25 March, probably staying until 29 March. We shall be staying in the Towne Center Motel, 2106 Fifth Avenue. I thought that we should stay there, convenient to the law offices downtown, to save trouble.
I am to make a deposition in our suit against the Bellingham Publishing Company.
Much love from
