Comment by Linus Pauling on the Book Science in the Cause of Man, by Gerard Piel
These penetrating and illuminating essays on the great problems of the modern world should be read by everyone. The author gives a clear and convincing account of how the world has been changed through the discoveries made by scientists, how the stage has been set for the incineration of all of the marvelous inventions of the last 500 million years of evolution, and how we have now reached the point when no one can have any assurance that the great catastrophe of nuclear destruction will not take place unless we think seriously about disarmament. This valuable book should contribute significantly to spreading the conviction that man's old dream of a world without war has now become a practical necessity, and that we are now forced to organize the world community on principles of freedom and justice under law and mutual trust.

Labor day
Dear Mama and Daddy:
It has been so long since I have written that I have forgotten what I have written about. I guess that I told you on the phone that Linus dropped in for a few hours between planes about a month ago. It was fun to see him, even for so short a time. He had breakfast with us. As usual, he brought a couple of cast-off sport coats, but unfortunately not as nice as that brown corduroy one. Those two even Peter wouldn't take!
Then, Peter came for about five days. He and I went up to the San Juans and rode a ferry boat about one afternoon, and had a pretty good time. He wasn't here for long, and we didn't get to do much, I'm afraid. I put him on a navy plane that was headed for San Diego, and I haven't heard from him since, so I guess he got home somehow. Maybe he broke down and bought an airplane ticket; I loaned him enough cash to do that, if necessary.
Also, Al Jacobsen was here for about two weeks at the end of July. One afternoon he just drove in the driveway, and there he was. We were pretty surprised.
Our kids are all thriving. Cheryl starts nursery school on Friday; she will go twice a week. Kirstin will possibly start after Christmas, in any event, they both will go to the Sunday school, so Kirstin will get some social contact too. They have just gotten nice new shoes, new tights, and lovely warm coats, with fuzzy lining and hoods. They are tickled pink, especially with the coats, and are putting them on all the time. They were so pleased in the store, when they were trying them on, their eyes just sparkled. Cheryl's coat is green, while Kirstie's is tan.
Crellie is eight months old now! He crawls all over, like a little mechanical toy, he stands up against chairs, etc., he has had two teeth for quite some time now. He has nice blue-grey eyes, and fuzzy hair.
Today is a lovely late-summer day, clear, warm, with a light breeze. I would be out sailing, but I have a slight cold, and I am hopeful that I can keep it from getting worse by staying in.
My friend Satya Kakar has just gotten his PhD, and is going off to Austin, Texas, for post-doctoral work. I think that he anticipates driving through Pasadena, and perhaps will ring you up.
Love,
Crel

22 September 1961
Dear Mrs. Alloy:
We returned from our European trip last night and your letter came today - your letter of the 20th of September. Your plans are going very well certainly and I think that we should have a good meeting. Certainly something needs to be done by everyone if we are to reverse this dreadful trend of just letting the world glide into a dreadful war.
You will be interested to know that we went to Trafalgar Square on the 12th of September to watch the demonstration which had been instigated by the Earl Russell. I must say that I have never seen such a huge crowd of people packed in such a small place. Some people estimated the crowd to be 50,000. Of course, it is impossible for that number to have been in the Square itself, but surely people were packed solidly on all of the streets and the police soon gave up trying to keep them in any one place. One of the best things of all was the fact that we spent some time with Russell and his wife after their release from prison. He is such a remarkable man and so full of the zest for living that it heartened us much to see him again.
I have many interesting things to tell you about the meeting in London which was called by Canon Collins and which we attended for only the last afternoon since we were busy with our talks in Germany until that time, I want to tell you about the effort to set up a non-Communist World Council of Peace and how the countries other than the United States opposed this. It was quite interesting and Homer Jack was, I think, quite impressed by the resistance to his scheme. I am interested in your flyer, which looks very good. It is, of course, easy to understand why you have had to add these phrases and probably they don't do too much damage. I don't know that our right of access is really legitimate, but then, of course, there is no reason why one should say anything about such a small matter as that, and, of course, continued freedom of West Berliners is about like the freedom of the Negroes in Mississippi. But these are not the most important matters and it is necessary for everyone to do what he can to save this world.
We have felt and still feel that the Berlin crisis was a cooked up affair for a definite purpose, so that no one need to be worried about peoples going to war over Berlin, but the question of Germany and the future of West Germany is a real problem and we must go about working out its solution as soon as possible. I leave tomorrow for San Francisco and I shall give this letter of yours to my husband and perhaps he can answer it, too. Do you still want us to come to supper on the 8th of November? It is possible that we can come on the 7th, for I shall be in the East and perhaps my husband will by that time be wanting to see me again, but we can arrange that later.
Best wishes to you and it was good to see you for a few minutes at the peace fair. Did everyone consider the peace fair to be a success? We shall have many things to tell you when we see you on the 8th of November. My good wishes to your son.
Best wishes,
Ava Helen Pauling

22 September 1961
Dear Peter,
Your letter of the 5th of September didn't reach me until I arrived home last night, after a very fine trip, albeit a bit bumpy over the northern portion of Canada. I am sorry that I didn't realize that you really wanted a camera and am sorry that I didn't have the information which is contained in your letter. Perhaps we can write around to someone in Germany who will be coming home soon or who would no doubt be coming to England, if you feel that you want one in the near future. There is a good chance that we ourselves shall be going back to Germany next year in case you aren't in any hurry for the camera. It was fine to see you and your family again and good to see the children growing so nicely and progressing so well. I hope that you earnestly work to get a larger place to live. I believe that you would have many fewer difficulties if you had a little bit more space to move about it. Perhaps if Julia were reasonably good about taking the children out to the park occasionally it would be better to give up the garden and have more house space. Of course, these are all matters that you must decide for yourself. The Daddy and I are thinking very seriously about moving out of our house here and I suppose we shall do so if Barclay and Linda decide not to go to Chicago. It will be hard to give up this place where I have put so much of myself, but on the other hand I am so busy with my public work now that I no longer have the time to really take care of the house and the grounds properly. I want also to go back to my music if I ever get any time because I should like very much to play again. We are sorry that Simon didn't come up a moment sooner and we could have introduced you to him again. He, I think, doesn't remember you. He came home with us - he and his third wife, who is a sweet girl and they seem terribly happy together. We brought them home in our cab. You know we have this arrangement with Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez in Sierra Madre to come and get us when no one else is here to come, so they took the Feinmans along as well. The Feinmans thought that they had come to get us and didn't realize that we paid them to do it. It was a lot of fun to see you and to go out with you and I hope that we can do it again before very long.
I hope, too, that Julia's eyes are all right now and that the children are over their colds. I hope that the next time I come I shall have some time beforehand to get some things for them. I want to get some things for you, too. It makes me feel bad to see you disliking yourself to such an extent that you no longer have any interest in what you look like. Is your shirt size 16-32 still? No, I believe your sleeve length was 33. Please write and give me some idea as to your size.
Elfrieda had taken very good care of everything and we are glad to be at home again. Last night it was very cold and I really didn't get warm all night, but I shall put on an extra blanket tonight. The Daddy is busy as can be with the huge pile of mail. You will be interested to know that I have now many more invitations to speak than I can fit in. I think it is funny that I should have a reasonable success at this speaking business.
Love to you,
[Ava Helen Pauling]

23 Sept 1961
Dear Linus and Anita:
Mamma and I are thinking about moving to San Francisco. I would be Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Medicine (tentative title) in the U.Cal Medical School. Some reasons are the following:
1. I think that in a medical environment I might be stimulated to have some new ideas. I have little contact with medical people here, and C.I.T. is not sympathetic to my efforts in this direction.
2. The appointment would allow me to come and go at will, whereas here I am restrained by having to give regular lectures.
3. Mamma and I think that it would be fun to live in San Francisco for a few years. We would probably rent an apartment.
4. The trip to the ranch would take about 4 hours, instead of 6.
Now I write to ask if you would make a gift to U.Cal. for support of my researches during 1962. If you would, it would make the transfer much easier than otherwise. We might move to San Francisco on 1 January 1962. I would keep some connection with C.I.T. for a year or two, to wind up the work being done there under my direction.
Could you let me know soon? I plan to talk with the U.Cal Medical School people on 6 October.
Much love from
Daddy
P.S. Linda, Barclay, and the twins came home yesterday. Mamma is in San Francisco today and tomorrow, giving two lectures.

26 September 1961
Dear Peter,
Mama and I got home safely. You probably saw that Feynman and his wife were with us on the plane. Mr. Gonzales and his wife met us and took us home, and we took the Feynmans along and delivered them to their house in Altadena. Feynman is going to give the lectures in freshman physics this year.
Then the next day Linda and her family arrived, after having seen you in London. They went to see Mr. Kamb yesterday and also saw Bobo and her family, who have all come to California.
I forgot to tell you on our last day that the night before, at Isola Bella, a man named Carlo gave me his card with best regards to you written on it.
On Saturday Mama had 100 guests to breakfast and then caught the one o'clock plane to San Francisco - I took her to the airport. She gave a lecture that afternoon, at four o'clock, and another one the next morning, at the Unitarian Church (the Unitarian Forum, 10:00 to 11:00, just before the service). Then she came back in the afternoon. Jeff and I arrived at the airport an hour early, because the clock in the lab had not been set back an hour, and I forgot that the time change had been made.
Please send me the corrected angles for garnet and also the angles for hematite, when you have them calculated, and also the figures. I doubt, however, that I can get to work on the paper until we get back from our November trip to the eastern United States. Nevertheless there is a possibility that I could work it in sometime in October.
It was a lot of fun to be with you.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

27 September 1961
Dear Dr. Arnoni:
On 14 to 16 September an international peace conference was held in London. It had been called by the Reverend Canon L. John Collins (of St. Paul's Cathedral, London), and had the sponsorship of a group of distinguished people from a dozen countries. The organization involved in calling the conference is Christian Action, of which Canon Collins is the chairman.
My wife and I were pleased to have been invited and to be able to attend. About 60 people from 21 countries, participated in the conference.
On the last day a statement was unanimously approved, by the 56 people present at the final meeting, and with no abstentions from voting.
I enclose a copy of the statement and the list of the participants who were present at the final meeting. All of them voted to approve the statement.
I do not need to point out to you the quality of the participants, but I may point out that the three participants from the U.S.S.R. included the distinguished writer Ilya Ehrenburg, and also Academician Alexander Korneichuk.
Also, I may point to the strong sentences, part three of the statement, deploring the resumption of nuclear testing and opposing ail nuclear tests and also calling on governments now carrying out or planning nuclear tests to halt them immediately. I may also point out the strong statement of opposition to the rearming of Germany.
I think that your readers may appreciate the opportunity to learn about this statement and to see also who the participants in the conference were, and I suggest that you publish both the statement and the list of participants in the conference in The Minority of One.
During the first part of our stay in London Bertrand Russell and Lady Russell were in jail. While they were in jail my wife and I participated in the great demonstration, involving 15,000 people, in Trafalgar Square, on Sunday 17 September. Then on Wednesday we had the privilege of talking with Lord Russell and Lady Russell in their London home. They continue to feel strongly, as we do that vigorous effort is needed now if the world is to be saved from nuclear annihilation.
Cordially yours,
[Linus Pauling]

28 September 1961
Dear Crellin,
I enclose an envelope addressed to the District Director Internal Revenue Service in Pasadena. Mr. Williams asked me to have you write to him, giving the following information for the year 1959 and also for the year 1960:
1. The amount of your taxable income.
2. The amount of contribution by Mama and me to your support.
3. Question as to whether you and Lucy filed a joint return or filed separate returns.
4. Whether or not Lucy worked during these years and had any income.
5. Were your children claimed as dependents on your tax return.
Now I can tell you what our situation is. I claimed you, Lucy, and the two children as dependents in 1959 and also 1960, on the grounds that Mama and I had contributed fifty percent of your income and that you had not been claimed as dependents by anybody else. I am not sure that this was right, but it was my understanding.
I have looked through Mama's checkbooks and have found checks totaling $2085 for 1959, made out to you. In addition you lived in our house for two or three months, which constitutes further support. I have only found checks for $920 during 1960, but Mama says that the yearly support was larger, and in addition you lived in our house that summer.
Please send the answers to the questions to Mr. Williams in the enclosed envelope. He would like to have them by Monday.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
