2 August 1961
Dear Professor Miller:
Your letter of 21 July arrived just as I was leaving the laboratory for a ten-day stay at the ranch, where I am cut off from the rest of the world. Accordingly I was not able to let you know that I would not be in Pasadena on 26 July.
I have been pleased to read your manuscript on gaseous anesthetics. It seems to me that your theory is essentially the same as mine. I can't see that there is any difference between an iceberg and a hydrate micro-crystal. You also refer to water in an icelike state, and often refer to the ice cover.
My manuscript in a form pretty close to the final one was written in May 1960. I would have got it published in the summer of 1960 if I had not been interrupted by the Internal Security Subcommittee of the U. S. Senate. You probably noticed in the published paper that the theory was presented first on 23 May 1960.
You may find it helpful in correcting proof to have the following list of words misspelled in your manuscript: Boltzmann, Lennard-Jones, anomalous (several places), Hadzi.
Also, in the next to the last sentence the verb should be are.
It is awkward to write Lennard-Jones-Devonshire, because it looks as though there are three men, rather than two, involved. I suggest that you say the theory of Lennard-Jones and Devonshire.
Your discussion of carbon dioxide, page 12, seems to me to be wrong. The CO2 in the blood could contribute to anesthesia, as both you and I have pointed out. However, at a given partial pressure of CO2 the concentration of dissolved CO2 molecules is independent of the alkalinity or acidity of the blood. What you call high CO2 is really, I think, high hydrogen carbonation, and low CO2 is low hydrogen carbonate ion. Hydrogen carbonate ion may well contribute to physiology, but presumably by a hydrogen-bonding mechanism
I am sending you a reprint under separate cover.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

- Letter from LP to A.V. Muller. [Filed under LP Biographical: (Deer Flat Ranch: Correspondence, 1957-1995), Box #4.047, Folder #47.1]
7 August 1961
Dear Mr. Muller:
I am writing to ask you and Mr. Woolpert to give we some advice in connection with the desire that my wife and I have to get some water from Salmon Creek, for use on our ranch at Salmon Creek, Monterey County.
The Salmon Creak ranch contains 160 acres. It lies to the northwest of Salmon Creek, and our southeast boundary, which is irregular, runs approximately parallel to Salmon Creek, for about 3,000 feet. The closest approach of our boundary to the creek itself is 500 feet.
There is a ridge running through our ranch, such that approximately half of the ranch drains into Salmon Creek. The other half drains into the ocean. More precisely, I estimate that 70 acres of the 160 drains into Salmon Creek.
We get water for household use and agricultural use (drinking water for cattle, some irrigation) from several springs. The springs supply water through the summer, but the supply is limited, and we feel that it would be better to have an additional supply from Salmon Creek. We also would like to consider the possibility of having same irrigated pasture, to provide grass for cattle.
The property around our property, aside from the ocean, is all in the Los Padres National Forest. The only privately owned property near us is the ranch to the southwest, owned by Mrs. Thomas Evans (Mrs. Evelyn Evans). Her ranch is about one mile away. At no point is her ranch close to Salmon Creek.
The road crosses Salmon Creek at an elevation of about 500 feet. Above the Salmon Creek Falls, at an elevation of about 400 feet, there is the intake of a pipeline, one inch, I think, for water for use at the Salmon Creek Ranger Station. This pipe may be approximately 1000 feet long.
We have in mind going somewhat farther up Salmon Creek to get water, to an elevation of approximately 500 feet, in order to provide gravity water and get over the ridge. The intake would then be about 1000 feet from our eastern boundary, and it would accordingly be necessary to get permission from the Forest Service to run the pipe this distance of 1000 feet.
It is accordingly my understanding that we are the only private property owner in the neighborhood who would be interested in making use of water from Salmon Creek. The terrain on the southeast aide of the creek is such, that it seems to me unlikely that Mrs. Evans would have any interest. The intake that we propose lies above Salmon Creek Falls, and there is the possibility that the Forest Service would object to taking water from the Creek, because of the decreased scenic value of the Falls. In the winter months the Falls are beautiful. In the summer the amount of water that flows is small enough so that the scenic value is very small, and I do not think that the decreased flow could be considered very significant in the summer.
Salmon Creek is approximately six miles long. It drains an area of about ten square miles, extending as far as Silver Peak, Lyon Peak, and Three Peaks.
I should like to know what the water-rights laws say about the possibility of our making use of some of the water from Salmon Creek.
My wife and I shall be grateful to you for your help.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
- Letter from LP to Clarence Pickett, RE: LP discusses with Pickett how his relationship with Norman Cousins has deteriorated. 11 August 1961
Dear Peter:
In the 1 August 1961 issue of the Physical Review there is an article on HCrO2 in which the authors discuss antiferromagnetism in very nearly the same way as I had planned to do for this substance when I saw a preliminary note about its magnetic properties. I think that this means that it would be wise for us to get the manuscript on antiferromagnetism ready for publication - our manuscript goes a long way beyond the two or three paragraphs of these authors. Do you think that there is a good chance of your getting some of the things done that ought to be done? I feel that it would be wise for us to write our article without waiting to get all of the applications of the theory made. What do you think about sending it to Nature?
As to the certified check that you have, I must say that the bank said that I should send it registered and insured, because a bank might not require identification of the person cashing the check, and it might be dangerous to carry it around. Also, I point out that even at four percent it would bring in $50.00 per month interest, and it ought to be drawing interest. If you want to mail it back to me, please do so. Don't lose it.
Mama and I expect to arrive in London on the morning of 11 September and to leave on 20 September, coming home on that day.
Love from
[Linus Pauling]

14 August 1961
Dear Dr. Chenoweth:
I thank you for your letter of 1 August. I am sending you three copies of my anesthesia article under separate cover.
I did not say anything about diethyl ether in my paper because I did not want to get involved in details and because it was necessary for me to keep the paper reasonably short.
I think that it is likely that diethyl ether and other ethers operate by stabilizing hydrate microcrystals, but they may form hydrogen bonds at the same time, perhaps becoming a part of the framework. The solubility of diethyl ether is 100 times that of carbon tetrachloride, and this increased solubility can be attributed to hydrogen-bond formation. The solubility of chloroform is about 10 times that of carbon tetrachloride, probably reflecting the known small power of the hydrogen atom of chloroform enters into hydrate crystals without forming hydrogen bonds.
I would be glad to know what information you have about your anesthetic material methoxyflurane. Its solubility in water would give some idea about its hydrogen-bond-forming power. Have you carried out experiments with it in regard to the formation of hydrates? I would be pleased if you were to carry out such an investigation. In order to get hydrates it might be necessary to add another microcrystal-stabilizing agent, such as hydrogen sulfide or xenon. Hydrogen sulfide is, of course, a much cheaper substance than xenon, but xenon has theoretical advantages. If you are equipped to carry out these studies, you might find it worth while to investigate crypton and argon, as well. I believe that x-ray studies on hydrate crystals of methoxyflurane and other substances such as the noble gases would contribute significantly to the theory of anesthesia.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Dr. Ludo K. Frevel. He would be a fine man to carry out x-ray investigations of the hydrate crystals of methoxyflurane, if he were interested in doing it and had the time for it.
I think that similar studies of diethyl ether and other ethers ought to be made. I would like to make them, but I have not yet begun work along these lines.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

18 August 1961
Dear Pete,
I enjoyed our little visit in London, although as always it was too short. Someday we'll get around to that often-talked-of long trip around England, seeing the countryside and all that. Anita apparently had a nice time with Joy also, driving around interesting parts of London.
I have retrieved Julia's watch from Philippe Beguin, where it was repaired free of charge. I haven't tested it out. I think Joy is supposed to come here later in the month, and if she does she can carry it back. If not, we will be passing through on the 29th, arriving BEA 555 at 12:15 and leaving PAA 121 at 4:30, all pm, so perhaps we can pull the same trick we did before and meet you in the lobby. Since we're there such a short time, it isn't worth your coming out unless for some purpose like that.
How is your taperecorder? You might send me a list of operas you have so I will know what not to duplicate. I don't have a great many myself, but I may shortly have some sources from which to borrow for copying purposes.
Shep Ginandes is here now, and we had one nice informal recording session, with kids participating. Perhaps I can send you a copy of that too.
I just missed you in Seattle (assuming you got there). I left a couple of jackets in case you might be able to put them to some use.
I'm sorry you haven't been able to show up this year in Geneva. We’ve had a lot of people around (sometimes too many) but would always enjoy having you.
How are your new house plans coming along?
[Linus Pauling, Jr.]

22 August 1961
Dear Mr. Ain:
My wife has told me that she telephoned you some time ago about the possibility of your designing a house for us, to be built on our ranch, 40 miles south of Big Sur.
We have been delayed in realizing our plans, and I am now writing to ask if you would be interested in another activity, probably preliminary to the designing of the house for us.
We may employ a ranch manager, and have the obligation of building a house for him and his family, perhaps during the coming year. Because the ranch is 28 miles from the nearest town (Cambria), we want the house to be unusually practical in the sense of permitting repairs to be made by amateurs. We have in mind that all electric wires, gas pipes and water pipes would be exposed, in such a way as to permit easy access. Also, the matter of control of vermin, such as mice and rats, is important. Moreover, we want the house to be rugged, but to cost only a small amount of money.
There is also the possibility that the ranch manager himself, assisted by local labor, would build the house, instead of our getting a contractor. The ranch manager is now working part-time for us, and during recent months he, with the aid of a workman, has rebuilt our barn.
There is no electricity at the ranch, but we probably shall install a generator run by a gasoline engine. Butane gas is available. Water comes from a spring nearby, and the water pressure is low.
We have in mind a house 16 feet by 60 feet, with a porch 8 feet wide running along the entire 60 foot front. I think that the style should be California ranch house, as shown on the sketch that I have made and that is enclosed. I think that for simplicity the roof should be designed as in B rather than A, which would involve a false ceiling in the exposed-rafter living room. You will note that access to bedroom B is only by way of the connecting bathroom or from the porch; I think that this design is satisfactory, although ordinarily one would want a hall.
My wife and I think that the walls of the house and perhaps the partitions could be made of 8" x 8" x 16" cement blocks, with whatever reinforcement is required. I suppose that the waterproofing problem can now be solved.
I have indicated that 8" x 8" timbers be placed over each window and door to support the upper part of the wall. For the partitions inside the house a steal bar might be satisfactory.
I suppose that we might have separate hot water heaters, using butane, for the kitchen and the bathroom. I have not indicated a location for the one for the bathroom.
I know that my ideas are those of an amateur, and I am giving them to you only to indicate what my wife and I have in mind.
Also, I know that this is a pretty small job, and that you may not be interested in it. My wife and I think that we might like to try out some ideas in this house before embarking upon the construction of the house for ourselves.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

28 August 1961
Dear Mr. Hoague:
With respect to our discussion about Einstein's belief in God, I have to report some statements from an essay of his written in 1941, and contained in the book "Out of My Later Years." The following quotations come from pages 26 to 28 of the book:
"Though I have asserted above that in truth a legitimate conflict between religion and science cannot exist I must nevertheless qualify this assertion once again on an essential point, with reference to the actual content of historical religions. This qualification has to do with the concept of God. During the youthful period of mankind's spiritual evolution human fantasy created gods in man's own image, who, by the operations of their will were supposed to determine, or at any rate to influence the phenomenal world. Man sought to altar the disposition of these gods in his own favor by means of magic and prayer. The idea of God in the religions taught at present is a sublimation of that old conception of the gods.
Its anthropomorphic character is shown, for instance, by the fact that men appeal to the Divine Being in prayers and plead for the fulfillment of their wishes." He then talks about the aim of science, to establish rules that determine the reciprocal connection of objects and events in time and place, and says that no one doubts that we are confronted with a causal connection whose causal components are in the main known to us. He continues as follows:
"The more a man is imbued with the ordered regularity of all events the firmer becomes his conviction that there is no room left by the side of this ordered regularity for causes of a different nature. For him neither the rule of human nor the rule of a divine will exists as an independent cause of natural events. . . In their struggle for the ethical good, teachers of religion must have the stature to give up the doctrine of a personal God."
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

- Letter from Norman Cousins to LP, RE: Cousins is enclosing a copy of the letter that his secretary sent to LP while LP’s letter reached Cousins when Cousins was in the Soviet Union. Cousins did reply to LP’s letter on June 21st and is also attaching a copy of that letter. In regards to the issues with Sane, Cousins does not think that there is a “witch hunt” going on. Cousins also thinks that any imputation of McCarthyism is shockingly untrue. - Letter from Woodrow L. Wroblewski to LP, RE: It was difficult for Wroblewski to comprehend why LP could not cope with Wroblewski's discovery. Perhaps LP's level of cosmic consciousness is not sufficient to allow him to rise to this level of enlightenment. Wroblewski farms with horses instead of tractors because humans are not robots and must follow the natural path. Modern automobiles, colleges, factories, and apartment houses will bring about a crude form of man degenerated by cancer and vile diseases. Wroblewski has found the secret of life, as revealed in the 5th dimension. Wroblewski does not understand why a society of social communism is lined up against a society of corporate communism so that they can both unleash their bombs to destroy each other. LP will someday wonder of the folly of this life LP lives. But don't get despondent. LP can write to Wroblewski or visit his farm whenever he likes. P.S. If LP likes, Wroblewski will send him a picture of some of his big horses working on the farm. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1960-1962), #445.2]

- Letter from LP to Alan Waterman, National Science Foundation, RE: LP asks that the National Science Foundation to reconsider its decision not to award a Fellowship to Dr. Edward Yellin. LP understands that the reason for not awarding the Fellowship is that Dr. Yellin chose not to answer certain questions asked by the House Un-American Activities Committee. LP can't believe that Yellin would be refused the Fellowship simply for invoking his Constitutional right to free speech. LP remembers the principled stand that the Foundation took when LP was under attack, and hopes that the Foundation will again show that they will not give in to political pressure. Dear Peter,
Mama and I are scheduled to arrive at the London airport at 11:35 A.M. on Saturday 16 September, coming from Munich by Lufthansa 126. We are then to go directly to the Hotel Russell, Russell Square, and to take part in the meeting that afternoon - we are going to be a couple of days late for the Canon Collins affair. We shall be busy on Sunday and Monday morning. We leave for home at 1:00 P.M. on a BOAC flight, Thursday 21 September.
It would be fine if you could meet us at the airport on Saturday and go to the hotel with us. If we do not see you there, we shall take a cab directly to the hotel, and be in touch with you later.
We have not made any engagement for the 19th and 20th, except that we want to see our friends the Coles, who are just moving to London.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
