  Dear Dr. Chenoweth:

  I thank you for your letter of 1 August. I am sending you three copies of my anesthesia article under separate cover.

  I did not say anything about diethyl ether in my paper because I did not want to get involved in details and because it was necessary for me to keep the paper reasonably short.

  I think that it is likely that diethyl ether and other ethers operate by stabilizing hydrate microcrystals, but they may form hydrogen bonds at the same time, perhaps becoming a part of the framework. The solubility of diethyl ether is 100 times that of carbon tetrachloride, and this increased solubility can be attributed to hydrogen-bond formation. The solubility of chloroform is about 10 times that of carbon tetrachloride, probably reflecting the known small power of the hydrogen atom of chloroform enters into hydrate crystals without forming hydrogen bonds.

  I would be glad to know what information you have about your anesthetic material methoxyflurane. Its solubility in water would give some idea about its hydrogen-bond-forming power. Have you carried out experiments with it in regard to the formation of hydrates? I would be pleased if you were to carry out such an investigation. In order to get hydrates it might be necessary to add another microcrystal-stabilizing agent, such as hydrogen sulfide or xenon. Hydrogen sulfide is, of course, a much cheaper substance than xenon, but xenon has theoretical advantages. If you are equipped to carry out these studies, you might find it worth while to investigate crypton and argon, as well. I believe that x-ray studies on hydrate crystals of methoxyflurane and other substances such as the noble gases would contribute significantly to the theory of anesthesia.

  I am sending a copy of this letter to Dr. Ludo K. Frevel. He would be a fine man to carry out x-ray investigations of the hydrate crystals of methoxyflurane, if he were interested in doing it and had the time for it.

  I think that similar studies of diethyl ether and other ethers ought to be made. I would like to make them, but I have not yet begun work along these lines.
