2 July 1961
Dear Peter,
I am writing to ask if you would have a book sent to me, and charge it to my account with you (also, you should submit the account from time to time).
The book is The Birth of the Bomb, by Ronald W. Clark, Phoenix House Limited, 209 pages, 16 shillings.
I am pleased that the Penguins continue to come.
It may turn out that Mama and I shall come to London later this summer. We had not intended to make another European trip, after the Oslo affair, but now Canon Collins and some of his friends are arranging a conference on disarmament and have invited both of us. The conference is to take place from 14 to 18 September. We shall probably attend the Pugwash Conference in Vermont, from 4 to 8 September, and then come to London approximately 10 September, staying for eight or ten days.
Will you be back home by that time? We are looking forward to seeing you, either on your trip to the United States or on ours to London.
I am alone this week, because Mama has gone to the National Meeting of the Women's International League in St. Paul. I am not really alone, because Jack Huntley continues to live with us, while he is trying to make up his mind about what sort of a job he wants to get. You probably remember that he is my second cousin, from Spokane, who for three years was teaching English on Taiwan, after having had four years in the Orient while he was in the Army. During the last couple of weeks I have kept him busy installing a set of sprinklers, permitting our lawn to be watered with much less effort than before.
Much love from

3 July, 1961
Dear Mamma and Daddy,
Thank you very much for the letter and for the cheque. I have had a surveyor who has looked at the place and I have his report. He says there is nothing drastically wrong with the house to the extent that one should not consider it, but that it needs a lot of work. Concrete floor in the basement room that does not have it (I would do this anyway and put in electric floor warming in the basement), damp course, new plumbing, new electricity wiring. The only thing I had not thought necessary, he thinks it needs reroofing. I would not do that immediately. I have not had a talk with my lawyer yet about the lease and the tenants and things, but shall when he has the papers. I shall make a definite offer to the owner, based on cash down and calculate the offer to be about 90% sure of getting it. It is more expensive to be 99% sure of his accepting it. I think we run a good chance though. Those tenants are a help in a way because the real danger is that some speculator will appear with vast sums to convert the place into ten single flatlets at £5 apiece per week rent. It is not likely with tenants on two floors. Such a speculator has oodles of money and does not really care what he pays. I think we can help the tenants out after a while though and it is big enough for us as we are now.
To do the place over top to bottom will probably cost about £2000. I shall plan to do stages I think, two.
What are you doing this summer? I plan to be in Boston July 23 to 25, Washington to Sunday 30 when to Boulder Colorado until Sat Aug 5 when to Seattle till roughly Monday 14 when to Pittsburgh for a couple of days whence back here. Other than this we should be here.
Things are going well, more or less. I am trying to get Julia to talk to some fellow, anyone. The children are just marvelous. You must come see Sarah. She is a real smug pug tub. Spoiled. Very yelly if she does not get her way. Thomas is very sweet. He is a bit whiney.

7 July 1961
Dear Don:
Thanks for writing to me, a few months ago, about extra sensory perception.
I continue to be interested in this field, but also I continue to believe that nothing significant has as yet been discovered. It seems to me that the people who work in the field are pretty lacking in ability and imagination. I can think up experiments that seem to me to be much more interesting than the ones that have been carried out, but I am not willing to spend time on them because I think that the chance of getting any results is too small.
You will be interested to see my paper on A Molecular Theory of General Anesthesia. It is to be in Science. I'll send a reprint to you.
I have had a letter from Paschkis about the possibility of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science circulating the Oslo Statement, a copy of which enclosed - that is, of its being included in one or the Society's mailings. I have told Paschkis that my wife and I would provide the 2500 copies without charge, and probably could make a contribution to the Society of a sum to cover any extra cost involved in including the statement in the mailing. I hope that you will help in reaching a decision. I wish that the job could be done without much delay.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

13 July 1962
Dear Dr. Hirsch:
I have been interested to read your letter and the paper on structure and synchronized stretch-rotation of hair keratin fibers.
I think that it is unlikely that the helical structure of polypeptide chains in keratin is responsible for the synchronized rotation and stretch that you observe. I think instead that it is likely that the macroscropic structure of the hair is responsible. Of course, the macroscopic structure is probably influenced by the configuration of the polypeptide chains, and accordingly the helical structure of keratin may have some, but indirect, significance for your observations.
You must not take my comments very seriously, because I have not been able to think about the problem very much.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

15 July 1961
Dear Mrs. Kennedy:
Your children, like all other children in the world, are laying down in their bones, along with the calcium, Strontium 90. This substance is present in the world because of the explosion of nuclear bombs. If more bombs are tested, the amount of strontium 90 will increase, and your children, accordingly, will have a greater change of being injured by this radioactive material in their bones.
I urge you to use your influence to safeguard your children as well as all of the children of the world by keeping the United States Government from resuming nuclear testing under any circumstances.
The Geneva negotiations must continue until agreement is reached.
Sincerely yours,
Ava Helen Pauling

- Letter from LP to Dr. David Pressman, Department of Biochemistry Research, Roswell Park Memorial Institute, RE: LP wrote a letter communicating Pressman’s paper to the National Academy of Sciences, but has decided to hold it because there are too many errors. He likes the papers he submits to be especially good instead of especially poor. Because there are so many mistakes, he feels that Pressman must rewrite it and send it back to him. 21 July 1961
Dear Professor Wall:
I shall send you a reprint of my paper in SCIENCE as soon as they become available.
I don't think that deuterium oxide would have a great effect on the hydrate microcrystal equilibrium. As you no doubt know, the melting point of heavy ice differs from that of ordinary ice by a couple of degrees. Probably a similar effect would be found for the crystalline hydrates. Consequently the physiological effect is small compared with other effects of deuterium on physiological processes.
A comparison of volume of hydrate crystals with partial molal volumes of the aqueous liquid in brain might well permit a prediction to be made about the effect of pressure in changing the temperature of formation of the hydrate microcrystals. Since change in pressure would affect other processes, this method of investigating the formation of microcrystals does not seem to me to be a very direct or promising one.
Two rather direct methods suggest themselves. One is the determination of heat capacity and the other the investigation of dispersion of dielectric constant. We are carrying out the first, and considering whether or not to embark upon the second.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]
- Letter from LP to President John F. Kennedy. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Individual Correspondence. (Kennedy-Klein, Morton)), #198.3]
Dear Mr. President:
With all the intensity that I can muster, I urge that, in your negotiations with the Soviet Union, you not take actions that increase the chance of nuclear war, such as the threat to use military force if the negotiations do not proceed in the way that you desire.
No dispute can justify nuclear war. The time has come when problems such as that involving Berlin and the German peace treaty must be settled by recourse to principles of justice, rather than by threat of military action or by the military action itself.
After sixteen years, it is of course high time that the German peace treaty be made. But the world cannot take the chance of a unified and armed Germany. A Germany armed with nuclear weapons would represent an increased threat to world peace. I hope that you are giving serious consideration to the possibility of initiating negotiations to extend the principle of demilitarization to a region in central Europe, including West Germany, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and possibly other countries. The problem of achieving such an arrangement is a difficult one, but the contribution that it would make to world security is so great that the problem should be attacked and solved.
I urge also that you make an honest effort to achieve the completion of the test-ban treaty, by proposing, in good faith, some reasonable compromises on the questions that remain unsettled. The United States has not yet proposed reasonable compromises in good faith. Until this is done, it will not be possible to place the blame on the U.S.S.R., in case that the Geneva bomb-test negotiations are broken off.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

24 July 1961
Dear Mr. Carlson:
My wife and I are pleased to hear from you. We are grateful to you and Mrs. Carlson for your invitation to us to stay with you, if we are able to stop in Rochester and give a report on the Oslo Conference and our other activities.
At the present time it seems unlikely that we can visit Rochester. I am under the obligation to prepare a third edition of my book College Chemistry, and must keep busy on that. Also, the other conferences that we are scheduled to participate in are going to take some of our time. It seems likely that we shall have to fly pretty directly from London to Pasadena, because of the opening of the school year. I am more or less committed to make the trip by way of Winnipeg - there is a direct jet flight from London to Winnipeg. Then I could speak at Winnipeg, and get to Pasadena in time.
I have sent two letters to President Kennedy recently, about the deteriorating world situation, but have not received any reply.
My wife and I are having good success in getting the printed copies of the Oslo Statement circulated by organizations, but less success in getting national magazines to carry it. I prepared an article, written in what I thought was a suitable way, about the Oslo Conference, and including the Oslo Statement and the names of participants and sponsors. In the article I emphasized also the Dartmouth Conference and the Crimea Conference, in the organization of which Norman Cousins was active. I put in mention of these conferences in a rather complimentary way, in the hope that he would be influenced by this fact. I pointed out that the article that I was submitting to him for publication in the Saturday Review was the same length as each of his two articles on the Crimea Conference. However, this effort on my part still did not lead to success. He rejected the article.
Then I rewrote it, to remove the specific references to the Dartmouth and Crimea Conferences, and made a few other changes. I submitted the new article to Harper's magazine. I hope that word about their decision will reach me soon. If they reject it, I may try the Atlantic Monthly.
I think that this article, a copy of which is enclosed, is suited to these somewhat intellectual magazines, rather than to This Week. I may, however, try to write an article, in somewhat different style, for This Week, especially if I am not successful in getting Harper's magazine or the Atlantic Monthly to accept an article.
I think that the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy has been doing a reasonably good job during recent months. Their chapters in Boston and Greater New York seem to me to be less effective than the groups that split off from SANE at the same time that I resigned as a Sponsor, that is, about nine months ago. These are the Greater Boston Committee for Disarmament and Peace, in Boston, and the Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups, in New York. We did not get any cooperation from SANE in connection with the Appeal Against the Spread of Nuclear Weapons or the Oslo Conference. National SANE decided not to assist in circulating the Appeal. On our return from Oslo we stopped in New York and then shortly after went to Boston. In New York my wife and I spoke in a fine meeting in Carnegie Hall, which was arranged by the Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups (not by New York SANE). In Boston I spoke at a good meeting arranged by the Greater Boston Committee for Disarmament and Peace (not by Boston SANE, which seems not to be doing very much).
The split was, of course, the result of the attack by Senator Dodd. It has weakened the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy in a significant way. Norman Cousins and National SANE met the attack by issuing a statement called the July Implementation Statement, which is reproduced on the letter that I wrote on 15 June, a copy of which is enclosed. Norman Cousins also announced that SANE had expelled a member of one of the New York Committees, who had been subpoenaed by the Internal Security Subcommittee and attacked by Senator Dodd, a man named Henry Abrams. I understand that his action with respect to Henry Abrams represents the only time that the July Implementation Statement has been put into operation, and that was done before the statement had been prepared and issued.
Before resigning as a Sponsor for SANE I tried to get the organization to change the July Implementation Statement, in such a way as to make it acceptable to me, but I did not succeed, and accordingly felt that I had to leave the organization.
I have, however, been unhappy about the success of Senator Dodd's attack on the peace movement, and have been trying to get the groups to cooperate. I decided to send the letter that is enclosed (15 June 1961) to the American Sponsors and Members of the Board of Directors of National SANE, in the hope that they would change the Implementation Statement. I have received some letters in reply, about equally divided between support of my proposal and opposition to my proposal. I don't know how this is going to come out.
In the meantime, of course, my wife and I cooperate with the various groups working for peace. I have become a sponsor of the Greater Boston Committee for Disarmament and Peace, but I am not associated in a formal way with the Conference of Greater New York Peace Groups nor with SANE. On the sixth of August I am to be the principal speaker at a meeting commemorating Hiroshima Day that is being arranged by the Los Angeles Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. Ava Helen will speak at the meeting, also (perhaps she is going to be the principal speaker - I should have said that she and I are to be the two principal speakers).
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]
