4 January 1961
Dear Man-of-the-Year, Dear Mama:
At 5:30 AM on 31 December, E.C.P. Jr. came out. He weighed 3.64 kg and was (is) 20½ inches long. He is very handsome and very, very good. He doesn't cry much. Lucy is nursing, and, because of careful preparation this time, is having a very good time of it. He has lots of black hair, in general looks quite a lot like the sweet little girls looked, except for one important difference. Lucy had a short labor, 3½ hrs. I tried to watch, but at the critical time had to leave. Alas. Anyway, I went back, and was there while Lucy was being sewn up, and while the placenta was being withdrawn. The little girls are very interested in the baby, want to hold him, etc.; sibling rivalry doesn't manifest itself as sharply as I was afraid it might, but we are trying to be as careful as we can about this. I will write more later.
Love,
Crellin

4 January 1961
Dear Mr. Esslinger:
I thank you for sending me your book Politics and Science. I have read it with great interest. It is a wonderful book. It is rarely that I have read a book that has impressed me so deeply with its clarity and significance.
I have learned so much from the book that I am sure that from now on I shall be indebted to you to some extent whenever I speak or write about world problems.
I hope that it will be possible for your book to be published in pocket book form, in order to make it available to more people.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

9 January 1961
Dear Peter,
We were glad to have your Christmas card. I am sorry that your box is still here. I'll try to get it off soon.
Perhaps you know that Crellie's little son E.C.P. Jr. was born 31 December. All is well with them. Lucy nurses with success so far, I judge. Crellin is quite a pater familias, n'est ce pas?
Peter, there are great plans afoot to make a big thing of the Daddy's 60th birthday this February. He knows nothing of this as yet but I don't see how we can keep a huge banquet, etc. secret. Now what would be the most marvelous would be for all of you to be present too. (We could keep that a surprise!) I have written Linus and these plans are just starting and may come to nothing.
At the big ACLU garden party for us in September, 1500 people, many asked if our kids were about.
We had a beautiful box from Linda and Barclay. They are having a good time I think. It seems too bad that half of you are in Europe on this 60th birthday. Still I think it might be worth it to make the effort. What do you think? I have a fine TL for you [...]
I shall write to Linda too. We are extremely busy and are always having more to do! We had a fine time at Deer Flat over Christmas and New Years. The Daddy even purchased a little cake and then put "Happy Birthday Mama" on it with a hypodermic syringe. He sang too. We had a little tree and everything went along well.
I don't know what childrens books you have. Do you have "Horton Hatches the Egg"? Do you want Peter and Peggy? I'll look over your books. I used to keep up with childrens books but I've been slipping of recent years. I'll have to get in the groove again, I guess.
Give my love to Julia and to Thomas and Sarah. Love to you.
Mama
xxxx oooo Be careful to write only to me about the surprise!

From: Linus Pauling
Subject: Electroencephalography
I have been thinking about electroencephalography, and I think that it would be worth while to carry on some work in this field. Perhaps the heat capacity apparatus could be operated by an assistant, under your direction, and you could try out an idea or two in the field of electroencephalography.
In particular, I would like you to consider the possibility of converting the EEC's into auditory signals, somewhat along the line described in the accompanying manuscript. I feel that an investigation along these lines might give valuable results. I won't communicate details now.

9 January 1961
Dear Peter,
Mama and I have been thinking about you. We were happy to get the nice letter from you, and especially to have your account of the development of Thomas and Sarah. We are looking forward to seeing you and them soon - that is, in six or eight months.
We spent the holidays at the ranch. We took along with us a nice little evergreen, about three feet high, which was growing in a redwood pot. Mama trimmed it with little ornaments, about one centimeter in diameter. We were alone on both Christmas and New Year's, but midway between the two holidays we drove to Monterey and saw Kees Van Niel and Mimi. We didn't stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve, but went to bed at our regular hour, about nine o'clock (our regular hour at the ranch). We had chilled a bottle of champagne, but postponed drinking it (or, rather drinking half of it) until the afternoon of New Year's Day itself. Then we drank a toast to Linie, to you, and so on through the second generation, and some toasts to the third generation also, although we lumped them together - Thomas and Sarah in one group - in order to keep from exceeding our capacity.
You probably know that Edward Crellin Pauling, Jr. was born at 5:30 A.M. 31 December 1960, weight 8 lbs.
I think that I am going to be alone for a few days this week. Mama has said that she is going to go to Philadelphia for the Board meeting of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. I have tried to keep her from going, but I think that I have failed.
She and I have some schemes about how to improve the chances for peace, and we shall probably be kept busy with them during the next few months.
I am reminded to bring up a matter that had eluded my memory until recently. When Mama and I decided that we could not stay for the ACA meeting in Cambridge, I told you, I believe, that we would pay the rent of the house that you were arranging for us to stay in. Could you tell me how much is due (to you, I suppose, because you no doubt had to pay for this)? Also, be sure to send on the bill for the Penguins. I enjoy reading the Penguins, although of course I don't read all of them - some of them I am saving to read after I retire.
Yesterday it was announced that Beadle is leaving the Institute in about three months, to become the Chancellor of the University of Chicago.
Mama and I have received a letter from Nyholm, with best wishes to us for the New Year. He expresses great enthusiasm about you. It is fine that your work is going along so well.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Petie,
You have received a copy of our appeal. Would you be willing to send on with the proper air mail postage those which are being mailed to you under separate cover? Then those replys which are returned you would send on to us unopened. Does this involve you more than you want to be?
We are working very hard and are mailing many hundreds.
We have included a small slip saying mail to P.P. We hesitated but wanted to get replies quickly if possible.
If you don't want to do this I believe Thomas and Dorothy Hodgkin would do it, but your address has been enclosed for the signed return.
We send our love and I'll get your box off when we're through with this.
Hugs and kisses
Mama
Peter, you will do it immediately won't you. AHP? xxxx oooo

12-1-61
Dear Parents,
Thank you very much for the presents of the New Yorker, Arizona Highways and Scientific American and the $100. We enjoy them all very much. Daddy, thank you for some books that have come. Chem Bond, 3x DNA models, 2x crystals and crystal growing, Bubbles, and Buerger.
We are fairly well. Sarah has at last got four teeth after many months teething. Thos. is well and fairly happy. Julia and I are in a state of not knowing what to do.
Please will you let me have up to $5000 to buy a mews house in north Kensington? I have thought about it for a long time, but have just learned that it is being auctioned on January 18th. It has advantages and disadvantages and would not do as either a permanent home for my family nor as a factory. It would do as a permanent home for me, or as an office and work place for me. It will not be a factory, but workshop, studio, office, flat. I need to have some settled place and it would be excellent. It is close to town, good communications, bus and train. It is in a mews and backs on to the Hammersmith train line which I ride to work. This is a disadvantage in that it is noisy but an advantage in that it is open and airy and sunny and faces south.
[Diagram of house location]
Both #1 and #22 are to be auctioned. No 22 is the better one I think. It might be a real bargain and I must have a place of my own to do the things I want. It is a disadvantage that it cannot be a factory but I hope to contract out most of the stuff, at least to begin.
My lawyer says that to begin with there is no need to incorporate, just register the name. In a few months if bigger then incorporate. What names should I use? Should I use mine and do all my activities in one company Peter Pauling Ltd. or should I use another name. Central Scientific or something? What do you advise?
I want very much to get some housing. Housing is rising at at least 15% per year in London. The longer we wait the more it is. While this mews is not suitable for everything, it will serve excellently for many things I want to do. I must have a place to work.
Perhaps you should wire whether it is possible or not. I am sorry the 18th is so close.
love from
Peter

Dear Mamma,
Thank you for all your letters. I have sent 53 on as requested.
We should certainly love to come to the 60th birthday. [...] The children are just marvelous. They are lovely. Thomas is very cheeky. He is pretty well adjusted. Sarah will adjust to anything. A combination of me and womanhood. Very tough and very beautiful and warm and lovely.
I think I shall not get this mews: too expensive. I should like it as my own. Still it is not worth the price. It will probably get about $10,000. 2 times too much. There is a lot going on. We have Horton Hatches the Egg. Send Peter and Peggy and Good Beginners Readers. The Cat in the Hat and Childrens Science. I am writing some childrens science books. Love from Peter.
PS. I shall ask you some time to buy a childrens encyclopedia for the kids. Perhaps Oxford. I hall [?] ask the best.

16 January 1961
Dear Otto,
I am eager to learn what you think about the Appeal.
Ava Helen and I have talked more about plans for the Oslo meeting. We think that it would be very difficult to arrange anything but a rather small meeting, with perhaps about fifty people. I think that between one third and one half should be scientists. The agenda should include conferences at which the problems are discussed and a statement is made, covering such things as the danger of allowing weapons to be given to groups of nations such as NATO and the danger of following a course that results in individual nations such as the Chinese Peoples Republic developing stockpiles. A statement could be prepared and released - a procedure something like the Pugwash Conference procedure. Also, a public meeting should be held, at which some of the people speak.
It seems to me that letters inviting people to attend (and we would have to offer to pay expenses - we are thinking now of the job of raising the money) should be sent out over the signatures of a few people - or probably just with the signatures of Ava Helen and me, in the name of a small group. What do you think about having the small group consist of Schweitzer, Russell, Pastor Niemoller, someone in Norway, Ava Helen, and me? I think that six is enough.
If you think that this is a good idea, whom do you suggest as the Norwegian? What do you think of Professor Arne Naess? Would someone else be better?
Possibly Brock Chisholm of Canada could be one of the people.
I feel that to arrange a really large international meeting at this late date is impossible.
I hope that you will let us know if you obtain the information as to when the May NATO conference is to be held.
Cordially yours,
[Linus Pauling]

18 January 1961
Dear Linus,
I enclose a thermofax copy of a letter that I have received from the World Congress of Psychiatry. I answered by saying that I was pleased to accept the invitation, and that my wife and I would probably be present during most of the Congress, 4 to 10 June.
It would be fine if you and Anita were to attend this Congress, also. Did you go to either the first or the second World Congress of Psychiatry?
Have you had any experience with electroencephalograms? We have bought an apparatus, and are planning to carry on a study of EEG records, by a new method, which I hope will be more useful than the standard jiggly lines. We propose to convert the jiggles into a sound pattern on a magnetic tape, speeded up enough to bring it into the audible region, and then listen to it. It might be possible to get more out of records of this sort than the ordinary written records.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Mamma,
I hope your plans for us all to be at Daddy's party come off because I want to come. I like coming to the United States, particularly when I am feeling blue. I also want to find out what is going on scientifically. I have asked the bosses and they are willing to let me off for a while.
A present for Pa; how about one of those relief maps such as you gave me? The map of the United States is nice but the colouring is not so pleasing. It is too red. You can see them all in the Geology building that is further to the west on the 1st or 2nd floor. The place is Aero Service Corporation, Philadelphia 20, Pennsylvania.
Calif: 41" x 47" high, scale 1"=16 mi. $45.00 FOB Phily.
World: 61" x 42", scale 1"=434 miles $47.50
US: 64"x40", scale 1"=50 miles, $47.50
I like the California one for Pa, but you know his likes better than I. I am writing to them to ask them to send you a catalogue.
love from
Peter
- Letter from Professor J. C. Decius, Department of Chemistry, Oregon State College, to LP, RE: Oregon State College is currently looking for a new president to assume the job at the end of this academic year. Decius serves on the faculty screening committee for this, and asks LP if he knows of anyone who could be tempted; as a scientist himself, he wouldn’t be against another scientist being chosen. K. S. Pitzer has also been mentioned, and Decius asks if LP knows him or not. Dear Peter,
We came back from Berkeley and Stanford yesterday and found your letters. We are sorry that you did not get your house, and think that perhaps you should have purchased it even though you think it is expensive.
Thank you for mailing our letters. We have already received many signatures including twenty Nobel Laureates and Dame Kathleen Lonsdale. We shall send one or two more if you will be good enough to forward them.
The birthday party is still in the hypothetical stage and perhaps nothing will come of it. I shall let you know in good time.
Bill Freeman has suffered greatly during his divorce which is finally over. The company wants him to take a long holiday and we have suggested he plan his itinerary to include the Paulings. In fact, Bill himself suggested this. If he should come to London, be kind to him and show him everything that would be good for him.
If you should want the money back again, just let us know. $10,000 doesn’t seem an unreasonable sum for a house in London today. You must be realistic in these matters.
Love,
Mama
We hope that all will go well with you. Would it help if we took the children for awhile and Julia went back to school? She needs to develop an interest in something. AHP

24 January 1961
Dear Mr. Mulholland:
In answer to your letter, I may say that I think that it is better for a scientist or engineer to spend all four years of college in a university or technical institute than to spend the first two years in a liberal arts school, but that the difference in training is not great enough to override practical considerations about availability, cost, etc.
It is not necessary to give up most social life to become a successful scientist - I think that most successful scientists have more social life than other people, on the average.
The greatest obstacle to becoming an outstanding scientist is lack of ability.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:jh

26-1-61
Dear Parents,
I thought I would write and tell you a nice story.
Yesterday morning, when I yelled at Thomas to hurry up so we could go to school, he came dancing out of the bathroom and down to me and jigged a bit with a grin and said he had a very pleasant surprise for me and did I want to know what it was. He had washed his teeth with my tooth brush.
It gives him secret pleasure. He has done it again tonight. I can tell because he leaves strawberry toothpaste on it.
(xxx ooo) love from
Peter
Do you want me to organize local signatures? P.

30 January 1961
Dear Anita and Linus:
Mama and I are happy to think that we shall be coming to Honolulu about the end of March, and shall be with you and the children for a while.
Our tentative plans are to come to Honolulu on Thursday 30 March and to fly home on Friday 7 April, but we might have to change these dates.
We agree with you that it would be better if I were to make a public speech than just to speak at the ILWU convention. I had thought that the Hawaii Chapter of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy might sponsor a public talk by me, possibly on Friday 31 March or Saturday 1 April, but the list of chapters of SANE that I have lists Kelly as the only officer whose name is given, and I think that you told us that the organization had broken up - at any rate, I have hesitated to write to Kelly. Do you know about any peace organization in Honolulu that might sponsor a public talk by me on some such topic as science and international problems or science and the problem of world peace?
Do you know the Unitarian minister in Honolulu? Perhaps the Unitarian church would sponsor a talk. Do you know anything about the American Friends in Honolulu? I can check up easily enough here about the Friends, and also the Unitarians, but I think that your information might be more to the point, and you might have some other suggestion.
I enclose a copy of a letter that Mama and I wrote and have sent out to a moderately large number of people - not only leading scientists, but people in other fields too. I don’t think that we have sent any to Hawaii, except one to Laurence Snyder. Mama and I probably shall go to New York about 15 February to present the petition to the United Nations (Dag Hammarskjold). We are also issuing invitations to about fifty leading scientists and other people to come to Oslo from 2 to 7 May for a conference against the spread of nuclear weapons. I am sending out letters today to Bertrand Russell, Schweitzer, Pastor Niemöller, Mrs. Roosevelt, and half a dozen other people, asking them to sponsor the conference. The theme of the conference will be that expressed in the Appeal. We haven't yet started on the job of raising money to cover the costs of the conference. Cyrus Eaton might put up a good share of it, but we would prefer he did not have the major responsibility or the sole responsibility, and we are not sure that he will be interested. You probably know that the Pugwash conferences are no longer supported by him - the American Pugwash Committee decided to raise money for the Pugwash conferences elsewhere.
Last week we had, as a visitor on the campus, Dr. Jerome Weisner, who is Special Assistant to President Kennedy for Science and Technology. We were very encouraged by what he said. One important statement that he made (privately) is that it is essential that steps be taken to educate the public about the need for negotiated disarmament and to stimulate public interest. We think that the Appeal and the Conference may be pretty effective.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Mr. Neff:
Mrs. Roark has written me that there is a possibility that the Willow Springs Station at Gorda will try to get electric power, and that you are perhaps going to write to the Rural Electrification Agency for information about the possibility of their participation.
My wife and I would be interested in having electric power at our ranch, on Highway 1 just north of Salmon Creek. I would be grateful to you for keeping me informed about what you learn about the prospects of electrifying this area.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

30-1-61
Dear Mamma,
I have posted three more letters. [...] I am reasonably well.
I should be pleased to see Bill. I am trying to get up a paper on the roll of the textbook in education and he has given me some information. The local boys are not so good at information. I must work on John Bailey.
[...] Well that Mews was not ideal. It would not do as a house for the family nor as a small factory. It would only do as a small shop and studio and office, and perhaps flat for me and I could have that in either a house or in a factory which would do other things as well. I must get something though; if there is any money available I shall start looking actively. I agree: $10,000 is not a lot for a house in London. It is not nearly enough. I really want to get a big house and convert. It is the only way. If it is my house I am free and can control; that isno landlord; be in the centre of town, garden; it is good to have young couples around to share baby sitting and so forth.
I would make a good landlord and want to do it. It is not science but it is me.
If something is happening about this party we should decide farily soon. I ought to arrange some money and lectures in the U.S. and to visit East Coast.
love from
Peter
