28 Dec. 1960
Dear Professor and Mrs. Pauling,
The coming of the Xmas season and a few days at home has given me an opportunity to catch up on some mail. In particular I had intended to write to you both for some time to tell you how thrilled we are with the job Peter has done at U.C.L. As you know it was my ambition for many years to get a man on our staff who would really effectively integrate x-ray techniques with modern inorganic chemistry. Not only has Peter done this but his enthusiasm for teaching research students has transformed their interest in, and use of x-ray techniques. If he has a fault in this direction it is simply that he is only too ready to help others at the expense of his own personal research! It was certainly a happy day for us when Leslie Orgel and Jack Dunitz suggested that he might join our research school!
I hope that you are both keeping well. We have had a nice Xmas, but marred by a tragedy to our neighbours. Colonel Hendrix of the US Air Force is a good friend of ours [and] his little boy of 9 plays with our son Peter. Unfortunately, they lost their 17-18 year old daughter in the Munich crash on Xmas Eve.
Maureen joins me in wishing you the very best for 1961. I will be across for the Detroit Coordination Chemistry Conference and hope our paths will cross. You may know that Arthur Adamson is coming to join us for a year next October.
Yours sincerely
[Ronald Nyholm]
