Dr. and Mrs. Linus Pauling, Jr.
3909 Round Top Drive
Honolulu, Hawaii
Dear Anita and Linus:
Mama and I were happy to talk with you. We are looking forward to having about ten days at the ranch, and to getting some rest. Mama has continued to talk today about flying over to Honolulu, even if I do not come; but I think that I do not need to take this threat seriously. I am looking forward to having a restful time, although I plan to write three scientific papers, possibly four. Three will be short, and the fourth one, on the molecular theory of general anesthesia, rather long I am going to present my theory at a meeting in University of California Medical School in San Francisco on 21 January.
I have been working away, desultorily, on the preparation of a report to you of the expenditures from the Anonymous Fund (As it is called here) during the past five years. The report has become quite long, but is still far from finished. I am, however, sending a brief report herewith. It consists of a statement about the various researches that have been carried out, the names of the investigators working on each problem, and the names of all of the people who have received salaries, wages or fellowships from the fund. Also, there is enclosed a report from Mr. George Green, Vice President for Business Affairs for the California Institute of Technology. The uncommittee balance on 30 November 1960 is under $2,000, and we are committed to several people for their salaries for another seven months.
Mr. Green has told me that he has submitted a financial statement to your Chicago office, according to the letter of which a copy is enclosed.
He has also suggested that I tell you what action the California Institute of Technology has taken with respect to overhead charges. An analysis of the activities of the Institute has shown that overhead expenses - building space, laboratory facilities, purchasing expenses, and administration - amount on the average to fifty-five percent of salaries. The Institute has not required that any of the Fund be used for overhead, and accordingly, since the salaries budget has amounted to $11,909.50, the Institute may be said to have contributed about $60,000 from its general funds to support the work.
I should point out also that some of the researches listed on the attached sheets have been supported in part from other funds. Also, the Anonymous Fund has been used to some extent for support of the work being done under my direction on chemistry in relation to mental disease, but the support from the Fund has been quite small in comparison with the support from the Ford Foundation grant, and accordingly I have not listed the researches in this field.
I am happy to have had this money available during the past five years for support of my work. Its availability has decreased my administrative load greatly, because of the absence of restrictions limiting expenditures to one or another well-defined purpose.
Much love from
