1 November 1960
Mr. G. A. Nugent
Nugent and Nugent
Washington Building
Washington 5, D.C.
Dear Mr. Nugent:
I judge from what you have sent me that you are calling me a Communist. You probably know that this is actionable, but I do not think that you are worth my troubling myself.
Have you read the transcript of my hearing before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee? I was shocked that a committee of the United States Senate should behave in such an unprincipled way. When I brought the matter up at my second hearing, Senator Dodd laid the blame on his staff, saying that none of the Senators, including himself, had seen the material.
I am sending some information about this Subcommittee to you under separate cover.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
Dear Dr. Pauling:
Well, are you a communist? If not, I am at a loss to entirely understand why you persist in giving support and comfort to commie causes, and publicly associating with such a group of branded persons.
Yes, I have read part of the record you have made before Cong gressional committees, the Supreme Court, ads in the Washington Post and The New York Times, and now publicity on the coming Oslo meeting. I can only repeat my original comment, "you should be forever ashamed of yourself."
Yours truly,
G. A. Nugent

Mr. Robert Y. Zachary, Los Angeles Editor
University of California Press
405 Hilgard Avenue
Los Angeles 24, California
Dear Mr. Zachary:
Following my telephone conversation vith you, I have made an estimate of the size of my proposed book "Fighting for Peace and Freedom". This estimate comes to 440 pages, of which 360 are pages of the text and 80 are pages of appendixes. On checking my estimates I decided that it might be possible without loss to cut the total by 10 percent, giving a book of approximately 400 pages.
My plan for the book is that it will contain probably 12 chapters, with the following tentative titles:
The Life of a Scientist; The Bomb-Test Petition; The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee; My First Hearing - Morning Session; My First Hearing - Afternoon Session; I Go to Court; News Accounts, Editorials, Advertisements; My Second Hearing - Morning Session; My Second Hearing - Afternoon Session; Senator Dodd's Crusade; Misuse of Power by Congressional Committees; Peace, Freedom, and Morality.
The chapters would be about 20 pages each except the two on the first hearing, 35 pages each, and the two on the second hearing, 55 pages each.
I think that it is well worth while to include the complete transcript of the two hearings. Questions may well be asked about what went on in case that anything is left out. I remember that when I read the book "The Lamont Case" by Phillip Wittenberg I was very much interested in the transcript of the hearing itself and in the other records of the case.
I propose that the book, aside from the transcript, be written in a rather intimate, personal way. I do not plan to have it be a scholarly study of the peace movement or of the problem of civil rights and their preservation, but rather a candid account of my own developing interest in these fields and my own relations with the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. I propose in my writing to be restrained, and perhaps even to make use occasionally of understatements.
I think that I could have the manuscript ready for setting up in type by 13 December. It is, I think, important that the book be made as rapidly as possible. What would you feel that a possible publication date would be, if the University of California Press were to accept the book and if the manuscript were available to you by 13 December?
Under separate cover I am sending you a copy of the transcript of my first hearing. The lists of names would, of course, not be included in the book.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:lh

Dear Mamma and Daddy:
It was fun talking to you last night. I have been meaning to write for some time now, but haven't gotten around to it. Ann Stadler surprised me the other day by asking me if I knew whether or not you were planning to stop in Seattle on your way to Bellingham...I reacted with mild surprise!
Enclosed is a letter to the editor of the infamous UW Daily that I thought might amuse you. Some time ago a comumnists [sic] in the local Hearst paper, the Seattle P*I, ran an article about how uninformed University students are. As a rebuttal the UW Daily ran a spot survey, asking the dewey-eyed undergraduates at random to identify a list of names. I am pleased to report that 75% of those asked could identify Linus Pauling, while only 30%, as I remember, could identify Edward Teller. Anyway, the next day was a little humor-type article, giving some sample answers to the questions asked in the above-mentioned survey. One soul, when he came upon Linus Pauling, scratched out the Pauling, and wrote in: "A character in Peanuts".
As to finances, our records for the summer are as follows:
Received from AHP: 14 June, 20.00; 14 July, 150.00; 25 Aug, 25.00; Total 195.00
Spent on food: 164.40
Charged to you: cough syrup, 4.50; gasoline, etc 44.73
Of the $ 195.00 that you gave us, $50.00 was to be a birthday present to me for the purchase of slacks. So you gave us $ 195.00 - 50.00 = 145.00 for food.
We spent 164.40 - 145.00 which gives 19.40 that you owe us on food. However, we charged to your accounts the cough syrup and gasoline, which total to: $44.73 + 4.50 = 49.23 which we owe you. The difference, $49.23 - 19.40 = $29.83 is the net that we owe you on the summer. We have all the food receipts, and you sent the gasoline bill, so I think that everything here is right. Of the gasoline bills that you sent me, I totaled all that I had signed, which were all but one, which Papa had signed. As to the slacks, since our return I have bought three pairs of slacks, two nice worsted (wool), and one pair of, I confess, sort of collegiate green cords. - (very sexy - LNP)
Regarding current finances, if we could return to the arrangement that we had last year I think everything would be fine. My records show that you sent allowance for June, so if we started again for October everything would be even, as far as the months we were in Pasadena go. Since we owe you ca. $30.00 from the summer, why not make the October allowance $100.00 - 30.00 = 70.00 That ought to make everything even again.
Would you either write to, or send me the address of, that shyster who looked after EW Crellin's will, and supposedly has my bonds? I don't have his name and address. A registered letter was sent to us here over the summer, but the post office sent it back to the sender, since we weren't here. Could that be them?
Kirstin was two the other day, and we had a quiet little party, with just us. She got a nice blue trike, which she manages remarkably well, and some other toys. She is becoming quite a little girl, talking ablue [sic] streak, and behaving quite well. She is toilet trained, completely for the waking hours, and occasionally calls out during the night to go potty.
I went out the other night to Sterling and Dorothy's, for Aunt Billie's birthday, I think 79th. Both our kids had colds, so they stayed home with Mama. It was a gay old family party, with Sterling, George, Jr., Peggy (whom I had not met before), etc. Lots of family. I had a rather nice time, especially with Uncle George, who I enjoy more and more every time I see him. They had taken along some old photograph albums, and George showed me one of you, your sis Lillian, and Billies [sic] two girls by her first marriage all sitting on a horse, out at the old homestead. He said it was taken in 1918. I must say you looked pretty cute sitting on that horse, almost as cute as you look now.
Let us know when you are coming up this way. We will be delighted to see you, and will be glad to cook supper, but I'm afraid we haven't room to offer you a bed. I know that Uncle George will be tickled pink to see you, too, and I have told him you are coming.
I think we will move around Christmas. A man in microbiology is leaving the university, and hence is vacating the house he rents, which looks quite nice to us. It is not too expensive, has appliances, etc., a nice view of Lake Washington and Mt. Baker. The house is a little little, but I think will work out very well for us. When you are here we can drive out and look at it from the outside, and maybe bother the Rickenbergs, if the weather makes the view sufficiently impressive.
Cheryl has a nice new bed....we bought a good hard mattress, and I made a simple frame with plywood, 2 x 3's and legs. It is a full single bed, and the most comfortable in our house.
Love from us all
Lucy, Crellin, Cheryl, Kristi

7 November 1960
Dear Crellin,
I enclose a carbon copy of a letter that I have sent to the shyster lawyer that you mention in your letter. If you don't hear from him in a few days, please let me know.
As to the bonds, I am not sure what advice to give you. The bonds will not mature until four years from now. The effective interest rate goes up rapidly, as you can see from the values printed on the bonds. This amounts to approximately five percent per year for the next four years, relative to the present turn-in value, if I remember the figures correctly. I think that you can turn the bonds in now for about eighty-four percent, approximately six-sevenths, of their face value at maturity.
My own feeling is that you might well be wise to turn the bonds in and to use the money to buy Parke, Davis stock. Mama and I have just bought some Parke, Davis stock. We gave a broker an order to buy it for us at the price $38.00 per share. At the time that we gave him that order the price was about $42.00 per share, but fluctuations in the market caused it to drop to $38.00 per share within about three weeks. It is now at about $40.00.
This stock ought to bring in dividends amounting to about four percent of the purchase price (at 38) and in addition there is a good chance that the value of the stock will increase. It might, for example, double in value during the next five or ten years, which would mean an additional increase in your investment at the rate of between five percent and nearly twenty percent per year. On the other hand, the stock might go down. I suggest Parke, Davis rather than an oil company or airplane company or something else because the value of pharmaceutical stock is apt to keep up even if the cold war comes to an end.
Mama and I are happy that we got through our difficulties with the Internal Security Subcommittee in a satisfactory way. I am preparing a phonograph record about the matter, to be sold commercially, and also am writing a book. Moreover, it seems likely that I shall institute suit for libel against a newspaper, with the possibility of collecting enough money to pay the lawyer's bill in connection with my hearings and suit against the Subcommittee; but, of course, perhaps I'll have just another lawyer's bill and no damages collected.
It will be fine if you are able to get the nice little house with the view of Lake Washington and Mt. Baker.
We have thirteen head of cattle now - six cows, four calves, and three heifers, all white-faced Herefords. Mama and I haven't seen them yet. We did look over our new truck when we were up at the ranch. It is beautiful. It is white, with a bright red stake body - that is, the chassis and cab are white. Also, a mare and a burro are grazing on the property.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]

[Handwritten:] Introduction at the Luncheon 12 November "Women for Legislative Action" 275 People, By Mary Clarke
Dear Helen,
In answer to your request:
A friend once asked Helen Pauling: "How is it that with all you've gone through, these last few years, your face is so serene?"
Helen answered: "Perhaps it's because we've done nothing wrong."
I would like to add that perhaps it's because they have done so much that is right.
Helen Pauling is the ideal Great Man's Wife. She keeps her husband physically and mentally nourished so that he can perform at his top capacity. But this is only one of her careers.
In her role as a mother she has raised four children who are outstanding examples of a remarkable collaboration that started when she was a student in a class instructed by Linus Pauling. He was busy with his research work but not too busy to note, and I quote: "I realized she was a pretty smart girl, which appealed to me, as well as being a very good looking girl which appealed to me, too." Their daughter and three sons have stayed in the science family and have brought eleven grandchildren into the Pauling fold. For ten years she has been a member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and now serves as a national vice-president. She also finds time to contribute her fine talents to the board of directors of the ACLU of Southern California.
1959 was a very busy year for the Paulings. They attended the Conference on World Cooperation and Disarmament in Australia, both speaking to huge audiences in Australia and New Zealand. They visited Dr. Schweitzer in Lamberene, and went on to the A and H Bomb Conference in Hiroshima. Again speaking to large meetings in Tokyo and Hiroshima. Then on to the International Congress of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom where Helen represented the United States membership.
You cannot separate the work of Helen and Linus Pauling. They work individually and collectively in an all out effort to preserve the peace and through this mankind.
Linus Pauling is a great man who casts a very large shadow but this remarkable woman casts her own. The Paulings don't stand in each others shadow, they walk in each others light.
I feel privileged to introduce to you the FIRST WOMAN OF PEACE, AVA HELEN PAULING.
Upon re-reading the introduction, I must say I like it, but also I hasten to add that one has to be inspired by a person or ideal to feel as I did when given the real pleasure of presenting you yesterday. See you upon your return. Until then, love to you and Linus.
Mary

22 November 1960
Ambassador Charles C. Stelle
U. S. Embassy
Geneva, SWITZERLAND
Dear Ambassador Stelle:
In July I had the pleasure of talking with Ambassador Wadsworth in Geneva about the progress of the negotiations for formulating the bomb-test agreement. I also talked with Ambassadors Wright and Tsarapkin.
I am writing now to ask if you could bring me up to date about the negotiations. Perhaps you could send me some press releases that have been issued during the last four months. Possibly you would be willing to make an additional statement to me.
I am deeply interested in these negotiations - I am a scientist, with some degree of understanding of the matters involved. I want the available information for use in my speeches and written articles.
One matter about which I should like to have up-to-date information relates to the proposal that states or authorities be invited or be subjected to some formal process of acceptance before they are allowed to sign the international agreement, after it has been formulated and accepted by the three great nuclear powers. Could you tell me what the present situation of this proposal is?
Also, I should like to know whether any progress has been made in the negotiation about the number of veto-free on-site inspections that would be permitted inside Russia. My understanding is that many months ago it was proposed by the United States that twenty or twenty one per year be allowed, and proposed by the U.S.S.R. that only three be allowed. Have there been any counter proposals from either side, that might represent an approach to a compromise agreement?
I shall be grateful to you for any other comments or information that you may care to give me.
I hope that your job will be completed in a few months. However, if you are still in Geneva next summer, when my wife and I are planning to come to Switzerland again, I hope that I shall have the pleasure of seeing you and talking with you.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: lh
