Dear Crellin,
I enclose a carbon copy of a letter that I have sent to the shyster lawyer that you mention in your letter. If you don't hear from him in a few days, please let me know.
As to the bonds, I am not sure what advice to give you. The bonds will not mature until four years from now. The effective interest rate goes up rapidly, as you can see from the values printed on the bonds. This amounts to approximately five percent per year for the next four years, relative to the present turn-in value, if I remember the figures correctly. I think that you can turn the bonds in now for about eighty-four percent, approximately six-sevenths, of their face value at maturity.
My own feeling is that you might well be wise to turn the bonds in and to use the money to buy Parke, Davis stock. Mama and I have just bought some Parke, Davis stock. We gave a broker an order to buy it for us at the price $38.00 per share. At the time that we gave him that order the price was about $42.00 per share, but fluctuations in the market caused it to drop to $38.00 per share within about three weeks. It is now at about $40.00.
This stock ought to bring in dividends amounting to about four percent of the purchase price (at 38) and in addition there is a good chance that the value of the stock will increase. It might, for example, double in value during the next five or ten years, which would mean an additional increase in your investment at the rate of between five percent and nearly twenty percent per year. On the other hand, the stock might go down. I suggest Parke, Davis rather than an oil company or airplane company or something else because the value of pharmaceutical stock is apt to keep up even if the cold war comes to an end.
Mama and I are happy that we got through our difficulties with the Internal Security Subcommittee in a satisfactory way. I am preparing a phonograph record about the matter, to be sold commercially, and also am writing a book. Moreover, it seems likely that I shall institute suit for libel against a newspaper, with the possibility of collecting enough money to pay the lawyer's bill in connection with my hearings and suit against the Subcommittee; but, of course, perhaps I'll have just another lawyer's bill and no damages collected.
It will be fine if you are able to get the nice little house with the view of Lake Washington and Mt. Baker.
We have thirteen head of cattle now - six cows, four calves, and three heifers, all white-faced Herefords. Mama and I haven't seen them yet. We did look over our new truck when we were up at the ranch. It is beautiful. It is white, with a bright red stake body - that is, the chassis and cab are white. Also, a mare and a burro are grazing on the property.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
