1 November 1960
Mr. G. A. Nugent
Nugent and Nugent
Washington Building
Washington 5, D.C.
Dear Mr. Nugent:
I judge from what you have sent me that you are calling me a Communist. You probably know that this is actionable, but I do not think that you are worth my troubling myself.
Have you read the transcript of my hearing before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee? I was shocked that a committee of the United States Senate should behave in such an unprincipled way. When I brought the matter up at my second hearing, Senator Dodd laid the blame on his staff, saying that none of the Senators, including himself, had seen the material.
I am sending some information about this Subcommittee to you under separate cover.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
Dear Dr. Pauling:
Well, are you a communist? If not, I am at a loss to entirely understand why you persist in giving support and comfort to commie causes, and publicly associating with such a group of branded persons.
Yes, I have read part of the record you have made before Cong gressional committees, the Supreme Court, ads in the Washington Post and The New York Times, and now publicity on the coming Oslo meeting. I can only repeat my original comment, "you should be forever ashamed of yourself."
Yours truly,
G. A. Nugent
