28 August 1960
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
We have received your letter of 19 August asking for funds for Rudd Brown for Congress.
I have the highest personal affection and regard for Rudd but I have been extremely disappointed that her campaign has been silent, or nearly so, on every issue that I think is important.
I am wondering if Mrs Brown is not so far removed from the ordinary citizenry that she is unaware of the great movement for peace, for disarmament, for recognition of China, for abolition of the Un-American Activities Committee, for real international cooperation, for the test ban agreement, for genuine civil rights legislation.
I should like to vote for her for reasons other than that her opponent Hiestand is so bad she can't help but be better.
Especially should Rudd become acquainted with the student movements in the U.S. (and in our world) which is a growth of the past six or 8 months and is the most remarkable movement in politics today. She is being most unwise to ignore it!
Cordially,
Ava Helen Pauling
