Mr. Norman Whitney
National Peace Education Secretary
American Friends Service Committee
20 South 12th Street
Philadelphia 7, Pennsylvania
Dear Mr. Whitney:
I am pleased to learn that you are making a series of visits to American Friends Service Committee overseas units in September, and that you would like to have my comments about the U. S. peace movement and AFSC's role in it.
I must say that I feel greatly encouraged by the progress of the U. S. peace movement. The National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy has, of course, contributed a great deal during the past two years. The special value of this organization is that it concentrates on the job of achieving peace and control of nuclear weapons and other armaments, where as, of course, the American Friends Service Committee carries out many other worthwhile activities.
I have taken part in public meetings, peace marches, and other demonstrations in many cities during the past year. Usually more than one organization was involved in arranging these meetings and demonstrations. Almost without exception the American Friends Service Committee was one of the cooperating organizations, and it has been my opinion that the AFSC has been especially valuable in this activity in forestalling the criticism of the peace movement on the grounds of leftism.
One observation that my wife and I have made may be worth emphasizing; it is that the Summit collapse did not have, in our opinion, a devastating effect on the peace movement in the United States. We believe that it increased, rather than decreased, the public conviction that great efforts must be made to achieve peace and disarmament through international agreement.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling: jh

Dear Pa,
Really you should come to Cambridge. Our party is on Friday 19th I think. Possibly Thursday 18th.
Thank you for coming to see us. We were very pleased to see you and to talk with you. I should like to talk more.
You should come. There is a rumour about that you are making too much of this by not coming. We all want you.
love from
