5 July 1960
Dear Peter,
Mama and I are expecting to arrive in London on Friday 15 July, at 7:15 A.M., flight PAA 120. We have a reservation in the Dorchester Hotel until 27 July, and then, according to our present plans, we shall go off to Geneva. I have written Taylor that we shall not be attending the Crystallography Congress. I am sorry about this. Please let me know how much the house will cost you, so that Mama and I can pay for it - we are responsible for your having made this arrangement.
Also, I have decided to bring my own cap and gown with me, inasmuch as the number of flights that we shall make is much shorter than originally planned. Accordingly you may cancel the reservation for cap and gown rental.
At the present time I am scheduled to appear before the Internal Security Subcommittee of the Committee on the Judiciary of the Senate on 9 August. I think, however, that the appearance may be postponed. Nevertheless, we have to plan to be back here, in case that the postponement does not occur. Moreover, it has seemed wise to me to give up some of the trip that we had sketched out.
I enclose a copy of I.F. Stone's Weekly.
I don't think that we need a car while we are in London. I suggest that, if you come to the airport to meet us, we take a cab into the hotel.
I am writing to the British Peace Committee, Jim Gardner, Secretary, saying that we would prefer not to be met by the press at the airport, but that we would not object to a press conference at the hotel later that day.
Much love from
[Linus Pauling]
